- Emperor Norton's Bridge western TV series episode starring Edgar Stehli, Jan Merlin, Ted de Corsia, Sean McClory, Carleton G. Young, Sammee Tong and Robert Bice. With narration by John Nesbitt. Directed by Roy Kellino. Joseph Abraham Norton arrived in San Francisco, California in late 1849 a wealthy man and did well with business. But by 1859 he had changed considerably. This story is taken from actual events. It is a short dramatization, documentary, biography on Joseph Norton who became known as Emperor Norton. Of course Hollywood takes a few liberties by adding a few things. Emperor Norton was known so well that Mark Twain fashioned the character The King from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn after the man and Emperor Norton appears as himself in the Robert Louis Stevenson story The Wrecker. Emperor Norton issued three Proclamations in 1872, creating the first vision for a great bay spanning bridge connecting Oakland and San Francisco via the Yerba Buena Island. This is an episode from 1956 of an almost completely forgotten television series. This is episode 61 of The Forsaken Westerns, an original TV series produced by Westerns On The Web Productions. The Forsaken Westerns series contains episodes of TV shows that were never broadcast or have not been broadcast in as many as 65 years. Almost lost forever, these rare television film treasures are now being released and uploaded for viewing from the www.westernsontheweb.com archive collection. All Hail the Emperor!
Nice to see a western without all the shooting and killing. Thanks for posting this.
THANK you for the great western and God bless American people and America
Mr. Terry, thank you for the hours of WHOLESOME shows you have given to our family, and countless others. Introducing our newest generation to good movies thanks to your kindness.
Thank you so much for watching
A funny and charming forsaken western. This first aired in 1956, as Epsisode 8 in the first season of the CBS anthology series "Telephone Time". Brett Harte of course is a familiar name mentioned often in the same breath as Mark Twain. They knew each other, and were friends for a time. But Twain came to detest Harte because he said Harte borrowed money from him and then never paid him back. Harte's wife was virtually impossible to live with, and his writing subject of the old Gold Rush west went somewhat out of fashion. So he found his last adoring audience in England, where he lived for many years, and was accorded a celebrity's burial at the end of his life. But he was honorable, in that he still supported his wife and children from England for all those years. Joshua Norton is a character I had never heard of before. But he seems worth a Wiki lookup at least. Thanks Bob!
Bob Terry thank you for the 'Forsaken Western' it was a time in the history of the USA that will not be forgotten. In my small way except my appreciation for this series. Thanks again 🙏
Robert we thank you for watching and thank you for this very nice comment.
@@westernsontheweb your welcome 👍
If he "excepts" your appreciation, then that means he will cancel it from his mind and treat it as if it didn't exist. So if you want him to "except" your appreciation, then why are you appreciating him in the first place?😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Very good video. Sweet...
outstanding job Terry. that was a really good video!
Indeed, indeed it was!!
Great intro Bob. Thank you.
I found this site quite by accident and I'm going to enjoy it. This episode was from a 1956-58 anthology series called "Telephone Time". More information on the series can be found on the web, but not the reason for for its title.
Thanks for uploading this episode.
This was just great!....Thank you so much .
Really liked this. A very well acted story. Thanks!
Thanks for watching
I have to watch them all now
This is weird. Just a week or so ago, I read about "The Emperor" on Wikipedia. I can't even remember why I was there. Maybe it was a link from something else I was reading, I don't know, but when I heard Bob describing him at the beginning, I knew I had just read the story recently. And now here Bob posts a video of it.
Weird.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks Bob!
Bonanza did an episode titled "The Emperor Norton" in season 7.
....Synchronicity
That was awesome 👍 thank you for sharing that.
I adore you, Emporer. It’s all just a construct anyway, isn’t it?! You are my hero. I wish that I could find some of his money notes or anything original related to him for sale (not that I could afford it), but it must have all disappeared in the earth quake and over time.
this was awesome and he did exist!
Thank you for watching.
This is great, how could I not subscribe?
Brett Harte played by Jan Merlin. Good-looking villain in many movies & TV shows
That was quiet a nice hear warming story
I say this same version on Bonnanza
Lovely film, very wholesome, i just find funny how the people who produced It probably used a portrait of Dom Pedro I as reference for the actor instead of Dom Pedro II (who had a long white beard not simply those mutton chops)
A true story folks.
Real history, Norton Emperor of The United States and Protector of México.
🐶 man's best friend 👍🏻
I've seen you on something before Bob I remember you we both like Westerns and we both have the same last name I feel like I saw you on a remake on some famous western shootout, like Wyatt Earp and Ringo or should I say doc Holliday? It was something like that,
Howdy Norm. There are several things it could be. I have been on a few shows and TV channels. Thanks for watching
Reminds me of "President Pat Paulsen".
Yes , this man actually existed and half of San Francisco turned out for his funeral.
He was a BIT crazy, but honestly he was more sane than over half the politicians of the last few decades.
Colorful characters like this are definitely worth a lookup!
Audy Murphy the best ⚡
but I don't get it
Fifty years later he invented the Norton bomb-sight
No. The Norden sight was designed by Carl Norden, a Dutch engineer educated in Switzerland who emigrated to the U.S. in 1904.
@@Brucev7 :)
And then seventy years after that the Norton Anti-virus software. Hey, the guy got around!
@@mickey1849 He was certainly ahead of his time with the software
@@Baskerville22 Absolutely!
What happened to the Forsaken Westerns ? We haven't seen anything regarding any news or further episodes in quite a while. Is everything ok ?
Thank you so much for asking. We have released 87 episodes. Some are available on this YT channel but some are only available on some online networks like The Westerns Channel. We are actually gearing up for season 4. But I have been working with Red Steagall on Somewhere West of Wall Street for RFD so we are running a little behind. Thanks again. Bob
@@westernsontheweb Thank you for the reply, Bob. I do not have The westerns Channel anymore so I wasn't aware there had been any newer episodes than are here on YT. Hopefully I will get to see those some day also. We appreciate your efforts. Thanks again.
