    As someone who took five years to get into medical school, it is nice to hear your story! I couldn't agree more with what you said -it really is up to ourselves to decide what we're willing to do to chase our goals.

    Hey Gianluca, thanks for being an inspiration as always! Lately I've found myself constantly doubting whether I'll ever make it, due to much uncertainties in life and lackluster components of my application. This really got me re-thinking about my Plan Bs and I really appreciate it! All the best :)

    This is such a great idea. I just had a question about your year 4/5 when you were planning on doing a masters. If you were applying at your 4th year, in the beginning of your masters, would you be willing to leave half way through it? I was trying to make my own plan but it looks like I can only do a 1-year masters course based masters if I wanted go down that path (which wouldn't end up really help my omsas research section anyways)

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 роки тому

      I would definitely have been "willing" to leave, but many medical programs will now not let you leave because it's unfair to the supervisors and programs that took you on for the masters (they state on their websites that you need to show proof of masters completion at the time of matriculation or something along those lines). For this reason, the 1 year can be a great option with the exception that you probably won't be getting as much done as compared to a 2 year masters. I had the same problem when I was making my plan, but ultimately I decided that if I was going to do the masters, then I'd buckle down and give it my all for 2 years 💪

    Great video! One question, althought you might look like a competitor against other people when applying to med school, what would exactly make you stand out against others? Does it vary from school to school ?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 роки тому +1

      Standing out changes from person to person, but really it comes down to being passionate about the things that you do. There are certain extracurriculars for example that are considered "high yield" in terms of med school admissions (hospital volunteering, research, work experience, etc.). However, if you're just doing these things to get them on your application, then most people will find it very difficult to discuss them during interviews or for essays. What makes you unique and how has your experiences shaped your story so far? That's how I was taught to think about standing out from other applicants :)

    My GPA (3.9/4.3) and not full course load for most years has me worried😣 Graduating next year, but think I'll take a year to study MCAT and get more experience. I'm also international so will have to wait to get PR first.

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 роки тому +1

      @RockieAtlas 4 роки тому +1

      @@nxtgenmd Using OMSAS it's around 3.8/4 which I don't think even scrapes the boundary of competitive. I'm hoping volunteering, work experience and MCAT scores may make up for the GPA. Thank you!😊

    • @arminsariaslani5139

      in Ontario not having a full course load immediately disqualifies you from the application pool for many of the schools I think. I hate to add more stress to this already stressful process but maybe consider a 2 or 1-year master's to make up for the lack of a full course load. good luck on everything Sabrina,

      @@arminsariaslani5139 I have considered doing a masters but I don't want to delay the process, especially as I have to wait to get PR first. Although most of the schools I was considering were outside ontario so I'm hoping it won't be such a huge problem.

    im applying to vet school and Im a junior in high school AHHHH im so scared it's harder than med school T^T
    also you mentioned you had a video with a chart of what every single canadian medical school looks for. Is there a chart for vet school?
    Also in your 5 year plan, did you make plans to volunteer at a hospital or travel to some other country and do medical help?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately I don't know much about the vet school charts or the admissions process, sorry!
      I had already been volunteering at a hospital for a few years and was going to continue that. I didn't make plans to volunteer internationally and don't particularly believe that it would have been high yield for medical school :)
      Good luck with everything!

    Hey, thank you for the amazing tips! I was just wondering whether the 3.6 gpa that you mentioned was your total gpa or your weighted gpa. For example western and queens have the two year weighted gpa option so was your gpa higher for those schools? The only reason I ask is because I am in a similar situation and don’t know whether I should apply in my fourth year (next year) or just wait one more year to allow myself to be a lot more competitive.

    • @shope1426
      @shope1426 4 роки тому +3

      If you meet the 2yr GPA for Western def apply if you can afford it, they only use GPA as a cutoff

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 роки тому +2

      Glad they helped :) I just checked my stats and going into 4th year (so after finishing my first 3 years), my cGPA was a 3.54 (3.6 was a ballpark estimate). My two year GPA at the time was around a 3.5ish. After finishing 4th year, I brought the cGPA up to 3.63 (and my 2 Year GPA to 3.78) and then after 5th year I would have been at a 3.7 cGPA and 3.96 for my 2 Year.
      With that preface I would say to apply to queens and western if you have the stats for it (above a 3.7 2-Year GPA and strong MCAT). The only thing you've got to lose is around $250ish. On the other hand though, it could be a pretty good investment 🔥 and it'll also help you orient yourself to the process if you need to apply again the following year
