Thank you for posting these wonderful old photos. Brings back memories - I was born there (John Finnie Street) during WWII. I visited the Academy and was horrified to find how much it has gone downhill.
great wee film i lived in kennedy street and used to run up to the corner to meet my papa at the glenfield canteen to mooch money, then back up to the bentick school, its grim all the industry we had the bmk was round the back in hood street, i remember a few places in this
I moved to Canada and now live in a town that has the same value's, politeness and feel that Kilmarnock did 30-40 years ago. I am horrified at the way my home town has degenerated. You only have to watch 'the scheme'!
Amazing pictures, Kilmarnock is so steeped in history. I moved to Canada and found a small town exactly like Kilmarnock used to be 30-40 years ago, now you only have to watch a series like 'The Scheme' to feel ashamed to call the town your own.
I'm sure the Academy Cafe was on Sturrock Street just south of the Academy steps - back in 1960s we'd come down the steps from Kilmarnock Academy and go into the shop and buy sweets there... This was before all the new one way system was put in place...
The cooling towers were in Riccarton as far as i know. If you mean the picture at the time 212 then it was the old Glenfield buildings in Low Glencairn street.I have no idea were the Academy Cafe and French Polishers were.Anyone help ?
