Volk has a longer reach than Max & a lot of other contenders in the division. He's built like a mini gorilla with longer arms than legs & no neck. This why guys have a hard time with him. Low center of gravity & Volk usually has a decent advantage with the reach.

@@dylan6480reach is honestly overrated since most people don’t know how to use it properly. Ian Garry lighting up Magny who has an 80 inch reach while Ian has a comical 73 inch reach. You can be the taller and longer fighter while having a shorter reach.
The only reason why Topuria has stat advantage is competition level and total time. You can have 100% TD defense if no real wrestlers in first 5 fights.
Not the only reason. Of course what you say makes sense but remember Bryce Mitchell only took him down once out of many attempts. Ilia's take down defense is the best I've seen.

I think everyone is overlooking Ilia way too much, even volk saying he dont see it as a challenge, i saw a clip of Vicente Luque saying he sparred Topuria and he was so impressed of Topuria strenght for a 45er but he ended up even more impressed how clean and technical he is and also it will not be surprising if he beats Volk, wich i thing is a hard thing to say, so i just say it will be a very competitive fight.

Even if ilia is that good, WHICH I think he is. Doesn’t mean he can’t still get dominated by Volk.
In my humble opinion, Volk is not going to pressure Topuria as he did with Yair, he gonna respect the punching power he isnt stupid, playing more the distance game changin stances, inside leg kicks on the lead leg, and i see Ilia looking for the close boxing range waiting for volk to throw some lethals, going to the body with the left hook, both of them have insane boxing feints, volk been more light with the feet, and ilia better with the tight boxing defense, sometimes volk change stances to southpaw throwing the right hand going forward leaving his left arm a little bit to low, and ilia been much more unexperienced, i dont see the fight going to the ground at least in the early rounds

Volk will figure out how to neutralize ilia IMO. But age is definitely a factor to consider too. Just glad Volk is a standup guy and takes care of himself. Really excited to see this fight. New contender with alot of promise. This will be a great test for Volk
I genuinely believe ilia wouldn’t even beat max holloway. I think Alex’s last challenge was Yair. I wouldn’t be suprised if he runs through this guy and goes right back to waiting on islam (I believe Islam will win)

In my opinion this is the Volks toughest fight ever in the 145lbs division, even harder than Holloway fights.
Another reason it's important for Volk to fight Ilia now, would have been bad for him, viewers and the sport in general if this wasn't the next fight. There is a very plausible scenario where Volk beats Ilia now, Ilia learns and improves to where he could beat Volk, but Volk has moved up a division and finishes his career before Ilia can get the rematch.

Alex is so tough, durable, confident and experienced that it is difficult to imagine him losing. However, the Topuria brothers do have what it takes to be an early champion. They started wrestling as little kids. Very interesting fight 100%.

I would say Volk has a bit more chances to win mainly because of his experience, but at the same time I don't see any other fighter defeating Volk apart from Topuria.
Ilia has everything a top champion needs. He is really complete fighter who is really good on striking and also very strong on the floor, being a jiu jitsu black belt and having wretling background.
He has the highest KO power of the division, but over all these qualities I think there is one that every fighter must have to beat someone like Volkanovski, which is the mentality, his confidence. I haven't seen many champions with the genuine confidence Ilia has in himself.
Anyway, I love both and even if I want Ilia to win I would still be happy if Volk win the fight.
But again, I was thinking the same thing when volk fought Islam. Islam's first title defense against volk, and Islam won. Then ko'd him on a week's notice. On round 2. Which is insane. This just goes to show, that sometimes champ experience doesn't factor as much as people think it does. It could turn a complete 180. Topuria and Islam aren't Yair, or Holloway, or Ortega. Upcoming fighters like topuria and Islam have a much more evolved fighting style. Other MMA styles, like sambo, folk wrestling, etc, are incorporated much more into their game. Exactly why volk was having problems with Islam.

And it wasn't as if volk was inexperienced or anything. Or didn't know shit. 2 weeks is still a long time. Some fighters take fights on less than a week's notice. Tom aspenall for example. Not to mention Islam beat him twice. Against illia, I would still definitely bet on volk if I was betting at all. Not the best example, volk doesn’t really play posum, especially up against the cag and Illia moves his head really well compared to poatan. Much of that being because of his boxing heavy style. Illia could get caught but I think it would be when they’re both in the pocket. Anyway, gonna be a great fight.

I don’t think any of it matters, it’s about if volk recovered enough and if he got too old. It’s all on volk, if he is at his best I don’t see a single way he loses, if he isn’t… well powerful hands on the younger fighter can be very dangerous and the fight is suddenly a lot more even.

It's almost reminiscent of the lead up to matchmaking Charles and Islam the 1st time, we saw the level of competition Charles was exposed to and a lot of people thought Islam's lack of high level competition would be a hindrance going from Hooker and Green to one of the greatest lightweights of all time. Turns out Islam is just a bad style match up for Charles, although its a very winnable fight for Charles if given the correct approach. Both Volk and Charles are supremely complete fighters, its just a matter of application and adaptability to a style like Islam's, who is also very complete and intelligent as well. Volk and Ilia is THEE fight at 145 for me
