MF-D is also a formidable 'cellist; I heard him many years back as leader of the section of the "Arturo Toscanini" orchestra in a concert conducted by Maazel on tour at the Kennedy center. Distinguished solos in Puccini intermezzi and Respighi "Roman" tone-poems. Notable both for the quality of the playing and for the loving attention and appreciation his colleagues gave him!
