  • This video describes the preparation of a Graphite Substrate Lead Dioxide Electrode. These inert electrodes have found to be very important applications in electrochemistry; especially for the electrosynthesis of organic and inorganic chemicals. The reason these materials are synthesised is because of the high cost of platinum which has prompted the search for a cheaper material.

I'm late to the party, but I'd suggest using a stir bar to mitigate the amount of buble formation on eithet eletrode. In conjuctuon with that i also suggest reversing the current for 1/5 of the time during each deposition cycle, with a minimum of 15 cycles, but ideally 30 cycles. You likely already know this, but the reason why for your viewers, is to build many thin layeres on the electrodes instead of just one or two thicker ones. This will exponetially increase the longevity of the electrode by increasing the the surface area of depotistio onto the surface with the formation of of dendrites, as well as sloph off weaker depositions to prepare them for the next cycle. This is done industrially for high quality electrodes that tends to be a trade secret, but not done for more affordable products.

Lead acetate &Copper acetate can be used instead of nitrates of lead &copper ?because I I don't have any nitrate salt..

видео работы этого анода увидеть было бы неплохо. Время, ток, напряжение и выход хлоратов и перхлоратов.

Can this be made using lead acetate or any other water soluble lead salt? (With copper acetate)

Yes indeed, lead dioxide can be synthesised from a soluble lead salt-however in most cases lead nitrate is the preferred salt.

why does copper nitrate is used?

Can this be used to electrolyse copper sulfate to make metallic copper, without the electrode dissolving?

How much Volt and Ampere do you use in the cell?

      As i used the multi-potential steps technique from the potentiostat- i used 2.2 V and 0.4 A.

thank you so much for the video, really intresting, i have one question: why did u fix the voltage at 2.2v ? how did you choose this number?

    • @DRTDC90

      Thanks, no worries :)
Yes 2.2 V was fixed throughout the experiment. As there are several papers on the preparation of these electrodes, i found 2.2 V to be the ideal potential for the experimental conditions i was using. :)

it totally depends on conditions for instace mine runs at 1.2 volts.

Look up the ideal current current potential for surface area for a given material and reduce that by 20-50%. That may seem excessive but it prevents excessive bubbles as shown in the videothat later manifest as flaws, as well as prevents erosion of the anode that could contaminate the cathode. Slow and steady wins the race here, and special care should be taken graphite electrodes as they dont tend to support deposition well. The porous structure of them is both ideal for increased surface area, but also terrible in terms of bonding strength.
