In China 50% of the budget is spent at local level. While in India this figure is 3%. China has fiscally decentralized. Where does the money of a city dweller in India go? To state capitals where legislators can reward their rural base or loan waivers in other states. In addition, city dwellers pay for private services: education, garbage, security, water, sewage cleanup. Double taxation. Then there is the Judiciary where one cannot expect timely justice, whether on criminal matter or contract dispute. The government takes money but is it delivering core services. Is India on the path to 1000 great cities in just 20 years?

My two problems as an Indian citizen is simple: 1.) why do i have to be taxxed so hard, but farmer who's more well off than me doesn't? 2.) i would have accepted it if the quality of life in india in terms of services was up to it. Number one problem of India has been low level corruption. It is a disappointment that the governments (at all levels) have done nothing to go after the corrupt. The issue is not just about the 10% corruption tax, but also the gross inefficiencies that come due to this. Just look at the Polavaram dam mess. Govt can hire 10k people and train them on anti-corruption electronic surveillance methods and go after the corrupt. It will instill a fear of law.
Low level corruption cannot exist if there's no support from the high levels. The entire high level bureaucratic set-up of this country is criminally corrupt to the core.
If Nirmala Sitharaman had even 50% of Monika's knowledge, she could have answered the questions and people would have got pacified but what we are seeing is blame game, sheer arrogance. But you also able to claim losses in many cases since indexed cost was higher than sale consideration. Capital investment must consider time value of money since investor facing a risk of opportunity income.
Who is this person selling real estate at a loss or at anything less than indexed cost. Most people will be in much more profit in the new scheme as indexation has been really low (avg 5.5%). While real estate has gone at a much more insane rate. But yes some people will take a loss and they should have a grandfather clause.

If the removal of indexation is not a problem, feel free to share a real life data driven example with us. and on what basis are you justifying the increase of LTCG from 10 to 12.5%? Deregulate, delicence, decontrol the market especially MSME sector, salaried small middle class, abolish personal income tax, reduce and simplify GST and other taxes, decolonise our democracy, governance structure to ensure minimum government for maximum governance. Police, judiciary must act within very short time and close the file. Govt must stop extorting high taxes, toll and other taxes. Regarding real estate taxes, govt must encourage owners to own more properties. For growth, more wealth for country need liberal tax laws for better investment, employment and better business growth
The real issue was not discussed. We took a home loan because of the tax incentives provided and all of a sudden they brought a new tax regime with no deductions. It was a shock. To this day, the new tax regime will cause huge tax outgo if we switch. So, many are sticking with the old tax regime and they are penalising them by not giving any relief though few biscuits are thrown at people in the new regime. This is the true anger of the middle class and all these new tax changes in this budget are salt on the injury.

@@zroth3734 the LTCG change wrt to real estate is retrospective upto 2001. The old tax regime continues to remain the same for nearly a decade with no changes in deductions but the new regime gets tinkering here and there like throwing biscuits at a dog.

Very well discussion. Unfortunately, 95% of people are financially illiterate. They do not understand the fiscal responsibility required by an economy. However, government should also be vary of people perception before increasing taxes, especially LTCG tax on equity stock market.
Regarding the angst of the people about Taxes, an extremely important aspect that is not spoken by anyone with anyone is about what happens in the name of "Assessments", "Adjudications", "Inspection" etc under Income Tax, GST, Service Tax (even now) etc etc etc...... Calling every Taxpayer as "Frauds", "Cheats", "Tax Evaders" etc. - Multiple Tax Notices, Not considering any submissions of Taxpayers. Income Tax fellows can reopen a matter upto 10 years, if someone else has reported about a Transaction quoting my PAN beyond 50 lakhs. - GST - every mistake done by Infosys in the Portal is passed on to Taxpayers to pay up with Interest & Penalty.... These are only some examples. Corruption at Tax Departments has increased at least 10 times compared to 2013-14 under INC. Taxpayers angst against BJP is accumulated over 10 years now.

My problem with budget is not at all related to taxes. The government had an excellent opportunity in the first budget to do drastic changes. Slash GST, let private companies have more money in hand so that they reinvest it, and create more jobs. India will grow at 8% even without the announcements in Budget. The government could have introduced schemes to shoot it up to 15% but the whole budget was spineless and without substance. India really needs to do investment in colleges and R&D at colleges but there was no mention of that. China has now surpassed USA in terms of allocation for R&D.Indian budget for Indian people indeed. Because India is nothing but union of people who lack courage and creativity.

i donot completely agree with MONIKA on F&o trading as previously sebi reduced margin on intraday which nudged people to F&O by reducing Lot sizes of F&O trade now they are crying why are you doing F&O at scale. this is stupidity at best.

We Don’t use govt school or govt hospital. Pay tolls on taxes. Taxes paid being used in giving free rations and building pools in Bihar that collapses frequently. If somehow we file ITR with some delay we are fined but Govt is okay to not complete their projects in time. A flyover near my area is in construction phase for 10yrs. On booking 3 AC tickets, we have to endure other ticketless travellers sleeping on our seats. I have other 100 items that I can tell. Low income people only pay GST as they don’t have direct tax. High income people avoid taxes and GST is minuscule for them. It’s the middle class who is paying both direct tax and GST. Middle class don’t protest like farmers do, otherwise they would also have income tax exemption like farmers with Audi have.

Just a suggestion to Monika, why is educational criteria used. Normal traders who professionally work in front of trading terminal is mandated to have certification and portfolio criteria minimum equity holdings for retail traders to trade in F&O. Putting them all together will work better than taking the current slow approach.
This is an extremely biased review of the budget that was presented for FY 24-25. I'm extremely disappointed with Kushal for this kind of a really bad review on the budget. 1. I've done all the math regarding the removal of indexation benefit from capital gains. This is a horrible decision, and it'll a 100% decrease the investments on real estate. And the way this issue has been trivialised during the discourse in this livestream is crazy, saying indexation + 20% is costlier compared to a direct tax of 12.5%, it's insane to me how you guys build a really idiotic narrative. 2. STCG and LTCG increase is also horrible especially when the govt wants more investment. Let the market move freely without taking putting hands into people's pockets, and take crazy taxes like this. 3. The way you've also trivialised the issue of city cleanliness and basic accessibility, saying "you go and ask the municipal counsellor of your state, and ask them why's it not clean?" I mean what kind of an irresponsible argument is this? The govt. is responsible for shelving out the funds, and this right here, is a real classic misdirection, stating "the moment people start asking the municipal counsellor, things will fall in place" (I'm paraphrasing), just listen to your own livestream and things that you sprout out of your mouth sometimes. I'm also a BJP supporter, but this point cannot be made, it's an absolute shite point. In the long run, this is going to hurt the economy of India, especially the taxes. Not taxing agricultural income is leading to tax evasion and black money. Especially also because political parties dont pay income taxes. But I think our really poor farmers need to be supported. So why cant we tax agricultural income also as follows - I picked the slabs and the rates aribirarily just to illustrate the concept but the exact slabs and figures for each slab can be tweaked with data. Doing this will also help Government to have very accurate data. a) Less than 5 Lakhs - the Government pays 6000 Rs per annum to the farmer via DBT b) 5-10 Lakhs - the Gvernment pays 3000 Rs per annum to the farmer via DBT c) 10-15 Lakhs - zero tax for farmer, no payout to the farmer d) 15-30 Lakhs - Flat tax of 10% e) Above 30 Lakhs - The person pays tax just like any other individual All taxes collected from (d) and (e) can be used to fund (a) and (b) easily.

Even if most people don't understand yet they deserve explanation and have to right to criticise the government especially if they pay taxes. Nobody can have expertise in all domains like politics, economics, social sciences, defence, Geopolitics but yet when a person votes he or she is expected to vote based on all these parameters ideally. Lack understanding is not the main problem, lack explanation and lack of systems in place that should be enabling people to have basic understanding of these domains is required.

What's the explanation that Agricultural income above 10L is not taxed ?. Middle class cannot protest while farmers can. that's the only reason.
In China 50% of the budget is spent at local level. While in India this figure is 3%. China has fiscally decentralized. Where does the money of a city dweller in India go? To state capitals where legislators can reward their rural base or loan waivers in other states. In addition, city dwellers pay for private services: education, garbage, security, water, sewage cleanup. Double taxation. Then there is the Judiciary where one cannot expect timely justice, whether on criminal matter or contract dispute. The government takes money but is it delivering core services. Is India on the path to 1000 great cities in just 20 years?

Number one problem of India has been low level corruption. It is a disappointment that the governments (at all levels) have done nothing to go after the corrupt. The issue is not just about the 10% corruption tax, but also the gross inefficiencies that come due to this. Just look at the Polavaram dam mess.
Govt can hire 10k people and train them on anti-corruption electronic surveillance methods and go after the corrupt. It will instill a fear of law.

You're wrong Kushal... Okay I get it in certain situations it can be beneficial to pay tax @12.5% without index than 20% with index. But you also able to claim losses in many cases since indexed cost was higher than sale consideration. Capital investment must consider time value of money since investor facing a risk of opportunity income.
Who is this person selling real estate at a loss or at anything less than indexed cost. Most people will be in much more profit in the new scheme as indexation has been really low (avg 5.5%). While real estate has gone at a much more insane rate. But yes some people will take a loss and they should have a grandfather clause.

Can't blame the lower middle class getting mad. Imagine a small family of 3 to 4 ppl, living in a larger city. Today, it's almost unlivable even with a combined income of 10-12 lakhs on rent. If govt can segregate single vs family income and then exempt these incomes upto 5 and 10 lakhs respectively, it can be a great relief in the short term.

If the removal of indexation is not a problem, feel free to share a real life data driven example with us. and on what basis are you justifying the increase of LTCG from 10 to 12.5%? Share the benefit to the true middle-class taxpayer who falls below the 30% category with data. If no one calls out the increase to 12.5, no one will call out the LTCG increase to 15% next.

The real issue was not discussed. We took a home loan because of the tax incentives provided and all of a sudden they brought a new tax regime with no deductions. It was a shock. To this day, the new tax regime will cause huge tax outgo if we switch. So, many are sticking with the old tax regime and they are penalising them by not giving any relief though few biscuits are thrown at people in the new regime. This is the true anger of the middle class and all these new tax changes in this budget are salt on the injury.

If the real goal was simplification then the slabs in the new regime should have been in such a way that I pay the same amount of tax in the old regime without exemptions in the new regime not the other way around.

Regarding the angst of the people about Taxes, an extremely important aspect that is not spoken by anyone with anyone is about what happens in the name of "Assessments", "Adjudications", "Inspection" etc under Income Tax, GST, Service Tax (even now) etc etc etc......
Calling every Taxpayer as "Frauds", "Cheats", "Tax Evaders" etc.
- Multiple Tax Notices, Not considering any submissions of Taxpayers. Income Tax fellows can reopen a matter upto 10 years, if someone else has reported about a Transaction quoting my PAN beyond 50 lakhs.
- GST - every mistake done by Infosys in the Portal is passed on to Taxpayers to pay up with Interest & Penalty....
These are only some examples. Corruption at Tax Departments has increased at least 10 times compared to 2013-14 under INC.

My problem with budget is not at all related to taxes. The government had an excellent opportunity in the first budget to do drastic changes. Slash GST, let private companies have more money in hand so that they reinvest it, and create more jobs. India will grow at 8% even without the announcements in Budget. The government could have introduced schemes to shoot it up to 15% but the whole budget was spineless and without substance.
India really needs to do investment in colleges and R&D at colleges but there was no mention of that. China has now surpassed USA in terms of allocation for R&D.Indian budget for Indian people indeed. Because India is nothing but union of people who lack courage and creativity.
GST rates are not decided in the budget. It happens in GST Council.

We Don’t use govt school or govt hospital. Pay tolls on taxes. Taxes paid being used in giving free rations and building pools in Bihar that collapses frequently. If somehow we file ITR with some delay we are fined but Govt is okay to not complete their projects in time. A flyover near my area is in construction phase for 10yrs. On booking 3 AC tickets, we have to endure other ticketless travellers sleeping on our seats. I have other 100 items that I can tell. Low income people only pay GST as they don’t have direct tax. High income people avoid taxes and GST is minuscule for them. It’s the middle class who is paying both direct tax and GST. Middle class don’t protest like farmers do, otherwise they would also have income tax exemption like farmers with Audi have.

This is an extremely biased review of the budget that was presented for FY 24-25. I'm extremely disappointed with Kushal for this kind of a really bad review on the budget.
1. I've done all the math regarding the removal of indexation benefit from capital gains. This is a horrible decision, and it'll a 100% decrease the investments on real estate. And the way this issue has been trivialised during the discourse in this livestream is crazy, saying indexation + 20% is costlier compared to a direct tax of 12.5%, it's insane to me how you guys build a really idiotic narrative.
2. STCG and LTCG increase is also horrible especially when the govt wants more investment. Let the market move freely without taking putting hands into people's pockets, and take crazy taxes like this.
3. The way you've also trivialised the issue of city cleanliness and basic accessibility, saying "you go and ask the municipal counsellor of your state, and ask them why's it not clean?" I mean what kind of an irresponsible argument is this? The govt. is responsible for shelving out the funds, and this right here, is a real classic misdirection, stating "the moment people start asking the municipal counsellor, things will fall in place" (I'm paraphrasing), just listen to your own livestream and things that you sprout out of your mouth sometimes. I'm also a BJP supporter, but this point cannot be made, it's an absolute shite point.
In the long run, this is going to hurt the economy of India, especially the taxes. If BJP cannot reverse these decisions, then I honestly won't vote the next time. I don't like the Congress, but BJP is also giving me the same incentive now, of not letting me vote for them.

Not taxing agricultural income is leading to tax evasion and black money. Especially also because political parties dont pay income taxes. But I think our really poor farmers need to be supported. So why cant we tax agricultural income also as follows - I picked the slabs and the rates aribirarily just to illustrate the concept but the exact slabs and figures for each slab can be tweaked with data. Doing this will also help Government to have very accurate data.
a) Less than 5 Lakhs - the Government pays 6000 Rs per annum to the farmer via DBT
b) 5-10 Lakhs - the Gvernment pays 3000 Rs per annum to the farmer via DBT
c) 10-15 Lakhs - zero tax for farmer, no payout to the farmer
d) 15-30 Lakhs - Flat tax of 10%
e) Above 30 Lakhs - The person pays tax just like any other individual
All taxes collected from (d) and (e) can be used to fund (a) and (b) easily.
