      Yeah that’s what I was thinking. 40/48 is equivalent to 15/18 through lowest common denominator of 5/6. Alex I hope you see this comment or have figured that out already. So the formula is: turning cranks ratio(40:1) divided by how many tooth divisions(48) and whatever fraction you get is how many times you have to turn the handle.

    • @hamasathecold7842

      I suppose that's why fractions exist hahaha

    • @caedmonswanson2378
      @caedmonswanson2378 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah that’s why 15/18 worked because 15/18 = 20/24, he just randomly found 15/18. Any multiple of 5/6 will work (10/12, 15/18, 20/24, 25/30, etc). The proper way to do it is simply the fraction all the way, then find what multiple of the denominator you have in hole count, and multiply the fraction to get your turns.
      For example, if you had to do 24/30, simplify to 4/5, and then see what multiple of 5 you have in hole counts (maybe 20 or 40 for example). If it’s 20, then you can multiply 4/5 by 4 to get 16/20. 16 turns on a plate with 20 holes. Never actually used this equipment though so i don’t know if that’s the proper procedure.

      That first sentence as a mathematician had me cringing - even if something tends towards in this case 15 but will never get there that matters!
      Then I saw it was just shoddy rounding errors, which really bothers me, as such simple errors really shouldn't crop up. However as a child of the metric system I know we seem to have always been taught to avoid fractions at all costs (near as makes no odds anyway), but really you should never ever actually do that division until the end, by all means cancel and tidy the algebra to a neat, simple to use, and quite probably reusable function, but never go using approximate decimal numbers stage after stage through your working, its just WRONG!

      The tables in the manual do suck. It looks like you were using a Chronos dividing head. I skimmed through the manual and couldn't see any clear instructions either, at least no quick reference. However, if you only have to cut up to 50 teeth it looks like you just change one of the indirect indexing plates on the side like you did. All that math made my head hurt, but your numbers are in the table. If you start on top left of page 17 the first table seems to list "T" for Teeth, "H", maybe for Holes, and "N" for Number of holes to skip... guessing here. Reading from top left to right on pages 17 and 18 it looks like the first table covers teeth 1-12 on line 1, then table 2 (on top page 18) shows teeth 13-25 on line 1, 4th line of table 1 again (on page 17) shows teeth 26-37, and finally 4th row on table 2 (on page 18) shows teeth 38-50. ***Looking at line 4 of table 2 (on page 18) you find 48, just below 48 (on line 5) shows use index plate w/ 18 holes, and just below that on line 6 it shows to skip 15 (of 18 holes). Hope that helps. I guess the other tables involve changing gears to get more teeth.

    Nice making Alec!
    For the dividing head, as a math fan I can try to guide you for the next time...
    Your gear ratio is 40 and say you want to make N features on your peace. You then need to make 40/N (of a) turn on the crank.
    To find the right plate, you need to simplify the fraction to the simplest. Say you get to x/y... Then you find the plate with a (or any) multiple of y holes: k*y holes and count k*x holes between each operation/feature. The features are then spaced each kx/ky=x/y of a head turn.
    If the fraction is greater than 1, make full turn before counting remaining holes...
    Let's take some examples...
    48 gears => 40/48 = 5/6 = 15/18 = 20/24 = 25/30 ... , so every 15 holes on the 18 holes plate as you did, or every 20 holes on the 24 holes plate, etc...
    4 sides => 40/4 = 10/1, so every 10 full turns
    36 gears => 40/36 = 10/9 = 1 + 1/9 = 1 + 2/18, so one full turn then 2 holes ont the 18 holes plate...
    I am sure that with some other examples, you could figure out how to use the tables in the manual ;)

    Hey, quick calculus concept course!
    Think of your grinder.
    You can destroy (or create) a shape/object by removing (or combining) thousands of essentially negligible layers.
    Probably doesn’t seem like this “huge idea” nowadays, but apparently negligible-but-not-actually-negligible is hard to make mathematically rigorous. Therefore we don’t talk about it till like school year 16 or whatever.
    All you’re missing is familiarity with notation, a dusty book and a bill for a ridiculous amount of money!
    Cheers Alec & Jamie!

    It's sooooo good bro...u have smooth transitions and the music to the parts in wich ur "just" forging makes it being very nice to watch.
    Also ur just a nice guy dude...hope ur doing well

    Hay Alec, your recent couple of video series have been really interesting. The build process, the trial AND error. The way you've come up with solutions to the various problems that you've encountered is brilliant!
    I have heard stories about the first ever pair of blacksmiths tongs and how you supposedly need a pair of tongs to make a pair of tongs.
    So I was wondering if you could do a video/series where you pretend to make your first ever set of tools.
    The challenge is no machines, and you can only use tools that you've already made 😜
