Laser Etched Leather Patch for Custom Trucker Hat

- I’ll be attending WorkbenchCon 2020, and after years of watching some of my favorite UA-cam makers don personalized trucker hats in their videos, I got inspired to make one of my own to wear to the conference!
If you have access to a laser cutter via a maker space or the like, making a custom leather patch couldn’t be an easier laser cutter project! And of course you’re not limited to trucker hats - you could put your patch on a bag, a jacket, backpack, etc. Sky’s the limit!

My first thought was to try blowing the residue away with the high pressure air before weeding. It might have kept your tape from getting gummed up so quickly. Also, nice tongue work at @6:30. LOL! Thanks for the great video!
That's a good idea Charles! I bet you're right - the air compressor prior to weeding would have likely saved me some time AND tape. I'll keep that in mind next time. Thanks! :)

E6000 is amazing. I just did 75 thick ribbed beanies and my clients logo laser engraved on darker leather. First time working with e6000 and worked perfectly. Didnt want to use the heat press in fear of ruining the sensitive hats.

@@FarbulousCreations actually went fast. I would do 6 at a time as I had to put pressure on the patches for usually 10 minutes to let the glue setup then I moved to the box to fully cure w the others. Overall prob took 3 hours. Went fast as I was working on other projects. Profit margin was awesome. Im considering bringing laser engraving in house as I outsourced that part.

Do you think it's best to apply wax or conditioner to before applying to hat? BTW love your logo.
I'm not a big leather expert, so I can't answer that super confidently (my mild disclaimer here, lol) but I don't imagine a normal leather conditioner or wax would hurt anything, so you should be fine if you did that!

Great video. It is probably because I am an Illustrator rookie but I didn't quite get the offset method vs. just changing the stroke size on the letters.
Hey Larry! Great point! Both would work! One is just offsetting and deleting the pre-offset path. The stroke method would require then converting it to outlines and doing a pathfinder / boolean operation to combine it with the underlying path as to not have more than one path get etched inside of the laser software. Multiple ways of going about it! 😊

hey sir what tape you used to cover the leather?
On this project, I just used regular old blue painters tape, but on a different leather project, I used a type of masking tape specifically for laser cutting that is far less tacky and easier to remove. Here's that video if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/AKRRs3foHjc/v-deo.html
Over time, how is that E6000 glue holding up? I was considering doing these, but I was going to take my caps to a boot repair shop or upholstery shop to have the patches sewn on the caps.
Hey there! Good question! I made the hats 7-8 months ago and wear them all the time when working outside and sweating and they've held up just fine! Hope that helps! :)
You can also get heat transfer film and do these on a heat press

Can someone tell me what the bear minimum strength of laser engraver/cutter it would take to do something like this?
Hey Matt! The etching itself can probably be done on a pretty low-powered laser, as its just charring the surface. Actually cutting the patch out might require a bit more power though, as I was actually surprised how strong the leather was - if I recall it took more power than I normally use for 1/4" birch plywood. But even on an underpowered laser, multiple passes should eventually be able to get all the way through. Hope that helps!

How has the adhesive held up over time?
Hey Josh! Adhesive is holding up just fine - I still wear the hats nearly every day and did a ton of sweating in them last summer without issue! :)

Perhaps, but with how dirty that hat has gotten over time in the shop with me, the glue isn't even noticeable anymore. 😂

Nicely done, though the leather worker in me is wondering why not just saddle stitch it to the hat? Could have just used the glue to hold it while you punch the stitching holes. Would be massively stronger and personally I think looks better.
Hey Kris! This was my first foray into leather, so I kinda wanted to keep it basic. Having said that, I did a more advanced leather project last summer and really enjoyed the stitching process so future hats I make like this will most likely get stitched into place. What machine do you use for the laser?
During this video I was using an old maker space Full Spectrum laser, but I now have my own Thunder Laser Nova 35-80. 😊

It's actually not my own laser, I use a laser at a maker space here in Minneapolis. But I believe it's an 80W Full Spectrum. Not sure model number or the like. Hope that helps!

How many watts is your laser? And what was the speed and power used?
Hey Joshua! I believe it's a 40W laser, Full Spectrum brand. For the etching, I used 10 power, 100 speed, ~500ppi. For the cutout, I did 25 power, 100 speed, 2-3 passes. Hope that helps!

I have made some Apple Pie "moonshine" in the past (with Everclear, so not real moonshine) and it was definitely kept in a mason jar like that. 😂
