  • The latest issue of Australian Foreign Affairs, 'Our Unstable Neighbourhood' examines the challenges confronting South-East Asia as it finds itself at the epicentre of the rivalry between the United States and China. It looks at the fragile state of democracy and the growing threat of instability in the region, as well as the risks for Australia as it navigates ties with nations that have vastly differing interests and outlooks.
Today's webinar features Allan Gyngell, Kishore Mahbubani and Melissa Conley Tyler, in discussion with Allan Behm, International & Security Affairs Director at the Australia Institute.
In partnership with Australian Foreign Affairs.

Australia should not use lies against other countries to promote human rights. It should correct its own human rights violations and not criticize other countries.

Big difference between promote and preach.
      Talk about "white man's burden"...
Australia like the US and UK Angloids prefer the later.
They assume their version of human rights is the best even if its simplistic and impractical almost childish in view.
They are mired in their Western centric view which is one of the main problem as Australia prefers still to see itself as a White man's outpost and has not been able to make the necessary mental switch to Asia.
Self aggrandised view of itself as a 'shining light' ignoring its own problematic human rights issues (remember most recent Aussie SAS massacre of civilians in Afghanistan white washed) very much the indictment on Australia's hypocrisy most in the region do not think highly of.

Australia is not an independent country. The Governor General can sack the PM at his whim and fancy, like Gough Whitlam got kicked out when he decided to be independent of the UK and now US.

In regards to Human rights, please remember that like other Western countries (US, UK, Canada), Australia too is a Christian nation. Christianity does have a dark history in terms of violating human rights of American Indians, Canadian Aboriginals, Australian First Nation people and many native Asian cultures. Even today, this cultural abuse (conversions) is on-going in a very sophisticated manner.
If Australia cares about human rights deeply then please raise voice against Abrahmic conversions. This eventually destroys native cultures that are rich, diverse and peaceful.

The title of the programme does not reflect the current status of ASEAN. But it reflects the possible status of ASEAN if US has its way. ASEAN is getting too big and US doesn't like countries or groups of countries getting too big and influencer. So it is going out of its way to create chaos and disorder because with chaos and disorder, their economies will be damaged. This is the modus operandi of US. It doesn't seek to promote growth and progress. It seeks to promote its own hegemony.

Australia needs to do a far better job of educating its public first about the culture of not just China but Asia in general. Kishore has been polite calling recent Australian foreign policy - "unsophisticated"
Australia does not feel like part of the region. It certainly does not understand nuance.
Australia has always been a bit bipolar between people who are incredibly culturally curious and those who are complete bigots. Its good that Australia has this introspective moment but how broad a reach this all important discussion gets to rank and file in the nation without Sky poisoning far more simpleton Aussie minds sold by US zero sum game bullshit civilization war, is the big question.
Just look at the hits for this discussion versus the demagoguery coming out of US Australian so called "free press" spouting mostly lies and hyperbole and you get an idea of the mountain to climb.

Basically, Australians , like all Western nations like to think that they are superior in every aspects , and with Asians steadily improving their economies, this is interpreted as a challenge to their interests even though Asians are just trying to improve economic interests. Such mind set is basically based on fears!

If some Western countries feel threatened by the rise of China, it probably is because they are frightened by their own image in the mirror. Many Western countries invaded and colonized other countries all over the world when they became strong. But the Chinese never did that even when they were strong during some period in ancient time. It is a matter of differences in culture and way of thinking.

Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia are under undemocratic/totalitarian regimes. Brunei is under an absolute monarchy. Singapore is "guided" (=guarded) democracy. Malaysia is under an illegitimate & fully corrupt government. Philippines is submerged in US style failed democracy being a former colony of the US. Indonesia is very slowly emerging from a country mired in corruption. SO ASEAN is in no position to pontificate to Myanmar.

The big dilemma Australian relations have had is the battle between an isolationist view of the world from Howard through to Morrison inter-dispersed by a more expansive view of Whitlam, Hawke and Keating and then picked up by Rudd only to be screwed up by LNP non visionary and outlooks. Australian schizophrenic views by Conservative LNP governments and a more visionary and less constrained view of Labor Governments has constrained our alliances and relationships generally. Howard and Morrison governments have been regressive and repressed our development regionally in this respect.
