  • I got this amp for $90-ish dollars off of eBay a few months ago. It worked for a while, but then developed a really bad buzzing sound rendering the amplifier unusable. I decided to fix the amp myself and while doing so shot video to share how I repaired the amp. Enjoy!

    Thanks, I'm shopping for my 1st amp, I don't even know how to play a chord lol, and a week of non stop digging has landed me on the 35RT. You're video showed me the guts and I like what I see, analog circuits like I learnt in High School, I'd feel better spending my money on that, Orange seem like the best quality.

      For the price range thay are the best in combo amps. If you want a head and speaker cabinet separately, Orange is still the best of its price range.
      They have 2 mini tube amps that are loud and sound great, the Micro Terror (Regular Rock) and the Micro Dark Terror (Metal), both for the same price as this combo. You'd have to buy the speaker separate. I went with the 35rt because of price, but also you get a buffered FX Loop as the minis only have a passive FX Loop that you have to buy a buffer pedal for separately or else you'll have significant volume drop when using fx pedals in the FX Loop.
      Still one day I want one of their tube amps as they just have a better overall sound and you can buy whatever type speaker you want, a Vintage 30 would be awesome with a Micro.
      Whatever you do DO NOT buy the Fender Champion in any wattage range. I got one as my first months ago and it's trash. It's unbelievable how much better the Orange sounds. The bass seems fuzzy at first but you just have to cut it back and up the highs and mids, also an overdrive pedal really cleans the bass and distortion up nicley. And distortion pedals sound fantastic and give a completely differient tone than the Oranges default sound. Every distortion pedal will have its own unique sound so it's like having many different amps with their own sound.
      My Fender sounded horrible no matter what pedals I tried, now I'm having a blast plugging them all into the Orange.
      And if you really wanna play guitar its not rocket science, just learn from tab assisted UA-cam videos and put the time in, after you train your fingers the muscle memory you get faster and faster and more sure of the notes. You really don't have to learn chords and all that to jam songs you like. After 3 months I can play Master of Puppets all the way though (it was a lot of work but I don't know squat about all the chords etc) and half of Battery and a bunch of other little licks from songs I like. DO IT!!! ITS SO AWESOME!!

    Great video and repair! According the the spec sheet this amp can take different speaker loads. It looks like 4 ohm (stock) is the minimum which gives the 35 watts power output. Would using an 8 ohm speaker cause this amp to loose dynamic range????? I’m guessing no, but I’m not sure… Thanks!

    @ silvermica You obviously know what you are doing. pls advice me. I bought this same model 35RT Crush here in India, Asia. It was packed with a 2pin power cable which has a hole for the ground connection. This does not work with wall sockets here in India, we use 3 pin power cables for all electrical appliances. I bought a 3 pin cable separately, but the amp makes horrid sounds when its powered on with that cable. Using just the 2 pin cable that came with the amp, outputs sound that's very bassy, which I think is a sign of the missing grounding. I am totally at sea on how to get this amp to work here. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    • @abhiramdeva1417
      @abhiramdeva1417 4 роки тому

      you can buy a pin seperately and screw it into the hole on your 2 pin connector,or buy a suitable 3 pin power chord with big pins, my crush 20 came with a 3 pin chord but the pins are very thick like the ones on microwaves, refrigerators and washing machines, the type that doesn't fit in normal wall socket but the big wall sockets in kitchen etc. look for those or contact orange. it could also be a fuse problem, we should use different fuse for indian and usa voltages. on the back of the amp they'll mark the box of the fuse with black marker check if its correct.

    Nicely done. I have this amp, and my one desire is to mod it with a power attenuator so I can switch it down to 5 watts. It seems that a lower voltage is all that would be needed on the final. Have you seen this done with this amp?

  • @Nicklowend
    @Nicklowend 2 роки тому +1

    Nicely done! Would you say these amps are well built ? With all the digital stuff around... I am just curious. With analog amps I think the chance for reparations is much promising than with digital stuff. thank you

    • @silvermica
      @silvermica  2 роки тому +2

      I have several of these - gig'd one, used another in the studio, and a third I've had powered on for several years (I use it as a blue tooth speaker). I'd say these are built well. The only digital stuff in this amp is the tuner and reverb - the rest is normal analog circuitry.

    Thanks for this video! I like my CR35RT so much that I'm considering tracking down another one to convert into a stand-alone preamp that I can put in a rackmount chassis. Would that be pretty easy to do by disconnecting the power amp stage and the transformer, and then just using effects send as the output?

    Hey man but i noticed that it still has a hum especially when you turn the volume up. I have the same issue on mine, is that an amp error or just the nature of the amp?

    • @silvermica
      @silvermica  3 роки тому +1

      The guitar introduces hum - which is quite noticeable with distortion turned on - due to the high gain of small-signals. All amps behave this way.

    I've had a policy for the last 15 years, to not buy any amp above 20 watts that's made in China. I'm revising that: now it's anything over 10 watts.

    • @silvermica
      @silvermica  5 місяців тому

      Why stop at 10 watts? Make it a 5 watt maximum - it's only a 3dB difference.

    • @Da_Publick
      @Da_Publick 5 місяців тому

      @@silvermica That's what made me go to 10 watts! 🤣
      I read an article about the fact that twice the wattage only give you 3db more, and I noticed that amps that were 10 watts and below, and made in China, didn't have the scattered problems that higher watt amps had.

      I'd make sure the amplifier can handle the voltage mains in India. I'm guessing it's 220VAC there. The amp may have a switch to select between 120 VAC and 220/240 VAC. The worst case scenario might be damage to the circuits from too much voltage supplied. =(

    • @alexjoseph644
      @alexjoseph644 6 років тому

      Thank u vry much for the reply. yes you are right its 220/240v here in India. the factory setting is at 230v on the fuse. I had checked on this before turning on the unit the very first time. so we are good here. the issue I m facing is with a hum/buzz on the amp which is eliminated when I touch any metal part on the guitar i.e., strings, bridge etc. I am no electric expert. but I think this can be due to a lack of earthing via the original power plug. but using a 3 pin power cable also does not work. in fact it creates more hiss and noise!
      the one I received with the amp unit is similar to this one,
      www.ukdj.co.uk/general-store-c44/power-domestic-c627/iec-fig8-leads-accesories-c635/ukdj-1-5m-c13-iec-kettle-to-european-2-pin-round-ac-eu-plug-power-cable-lead-cord-pc-p4799
      and the one I am trying to use for grounding is this,
      www.amazon.in/gp/product/B06XRWY6S8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      In fact this is the second amp I have bought this year to start recording my music. The first 1 I bought is a Fender Mustang V2 amp. Same issues. Got the unit replaced for a brand new one from the Amazon retailer. But the issue persists. I got this Orange amp with high hopes (also cause it has the effects loop which the mustang does not). But I am facing the wall again.
      I've even taken my guitar and amp to the biggest local music store and plugged in there hoping the issue could be caused due to the electric wiring in my apartment. But no luck, it sucks just as bad in the music store!
      Any thoughts? Thanks again.
