Great reaction. The whole TED Talk is worth a watch. They play two other songs and talk a bit about their history and passion. The drumstick that Pau broke (only one) LANDED ON A CYMBAL. She knocked it loose later, with the one new stick... If you back the video up a bit you can see the stick break, fly up in the air, and land. Then she grabs another. The broken stick stays where it landed until she hits that cymbal again.

My favorite part of these comments are the ones correcting me about how many sticks or stick she broke in the performance..... does it really matter how many? Honestly she will probably break them all eventually lol let’s not forget that guitar groove mid song and how smooth the bass line is.... it takes serious bass chops to keep up with the Tasmanian Devil playing the drums lol

I like your insights on Pau's drumming techniques, and although she was really hammering the kit in a lot of these early performances, she's a lot more efficient in the last year or so, and gets the same (or better) sound and volume as she did before. That said, she actually snapped the stick on a snare rim shot around 2:21 and it landed on the cymbal to her right where she launched it later on. I've seen this video umpteen times now, and I always get a kick how most male reactors catch the broken stick right off, and never catch the fact that she's playing in heels, but the female reactors almost always catch the part where she's in heels, but don't catch the broken stick shortly before! You actually caught both in the same video, so kudos to you!!🤣👍 New subscriber here.😉

I saw the viral Enter Sandman video a few years back and thought wow they're good. Then I saw this about 18 months ago and I was hooked. The talks in between the three songs they played at this TED Talk were very inspirational about not giving up on your dreams. Pau "the Shredder" was only 14 at this time and you can't take your eyes off her, especially when that topknot ponytail goes to swirling. Dany, the guitarist is known for being truly believable when she sings -- check out anything from Queen of the Murder Scene. Nice reaction.

Spoiler they started playing the game Rock Band (the successor to the original Guitar Hero) and that awoke the desire to play and write music.

Paulina (The Drummer) had only broken her left stick once. Part of the stick flew up and landed on the crash cymbal. She place the broken stick on the floor and grabbed a new one. the end of the next measure she hit the cymbal and the piece of drum stick slew off. Up until just before the covid quarantine she had rented drums for most of their shows. She does bring here own pedals, cymbals and Roland foot triggers for Ableton Live run on their laptop for click/backing and Video tracks though.

This was early in their career. Pau no longer raises her arms as high. She worked with her drum teacher to have the same power without having her arms so high. As an indie band they couldn’t afford to bring her drums to every concert. She brings her cage, cymbals and sticks but not the drums. So this kit is rented. You need to watch the whole TED talk because you missed the talking part. But you probably would get blocked if you try to react to the whole thing as it is owned by TEDx at University of Nevada. @@OldSkuleNerd That's part of why they have invested in a cage for her. It has position locks on it so that the setup time is greatly reduced. Especially when she isn't really using her own kit because of the problems/expense flying with the whole thing it used to take awhile to adjust everything because she is physically so short. Remember that until this summer they were crowd funded and had to prioritize expenses... like snacks (Ale) LOL. Also, Pau has a lot of control over how hard she hits now as you can see if you react to some of the "acoustic" videos from 2019 where she is using electronic pads. But when she started she was 9 or less and had to really pound her Yamaha drum set to get the sound; I believe she was 14 for this performance, They were actually invited for 2 of these a year apart.
As for mikes, that has been a recurring problem. Now that they have signed to Lava Records I hope they will get a lot more support from a sound mixer out front that can hear the actual levels while they are performing. Check the Nightwish Wacken 2013 concert versus 2018 concert; the people doing the sound in 2013 did much better as an example of the difference a good sound mixer can make. It was quite a load that these 3 ladies were carrying on their own at the time of this performance. More recently Pau has done a lot of MIDI programming on the laptop you see beside her. She now has presets and such programmed in and has direct links to the Helix Line VI foot boards that Dany and Ale use though Ale hadn't put that much into hers until recently... now that she is all of 16, Ale is experimenting more with her foot controls. Before, she was pretty much using it just for tuning. BTW, around September she received her 5 string Spector made by Spector USA to her specifications. Looking forward to hearing the changes on the new album when it gets out of post production.

I absolutely love this band, thanks for checking them out! I wonder if part of the reason for Pau's hard hitting style is that she started playing at such a young age (7?) and played on an adult kit from that young age. I would imagine she would've had to hit them as hard as she could at 7. I just love her "big arms" animal-style drumming, it's really entertaining. Her drum teacher has gotten her to tone it done a little bit recently, but she's still a hard hitter!

Paulina is the drummer. She didn't drop a stick. She broke a stick. The piece that broke off landed on the edge of the cymbal. Watch closely. I know... people already told you that. Daniela is the guitarist and principal vocal lead. The awesome bassist is Alejandra. Paulina is sponsored by Sabian Cymbals and makes Vic Firth a lot of money too.
That was not the TEDx Talk. That was just a part of their presentation. You really need to see the entire thing on the TEDx Talks UA-cam channel. Ellen and Target paid for them to go to Berkley School of Music in Boston, and they released a vlog while there and said at the time one of the best things they learned was their stage presence, which they took to heart and it clearly shows. she does still occasionally flail like that not too much any more. sposored by Rick Firth and Sabian, Dany is sponsored by Manson and Orange amps, and not long after this was gifted her first of 5 now Spearfish by Rick Toone himself. And Ale is the youngest artist to be sponsored by Spector at 13again not long after this. She just turned 16 and recently received her custom painted 5 string bass and a acoustic bass from Spector and next year has a golden bass coming out in her name as well. They are extremely fan friendly on patreon, instagram and also b4 and after shows although that is going to get harder as they get more popular. Their last performance on Dull Knives on De(tour) in august was great and even Lzzy Hale jumped in chat and said that rock is safe in their hands and she would love to tour with them when this covid bs is over. anyways there is a little background i havent seen other post yet lol thanks be safe cioa for now

since this is an analisis video someone has to point that Pau only sings in the a capella intro, after that is lipsync. Daniela´s little flaws reveal a real live singing. Also, a recorded keyboard can be heard at the end of the song. In other videos, Old Scholl Nerd pointed out the postproduction "tricks" in some live performance. I don´t know if he didn´t notice that here.

It's not "wasted effort" it's an awesomely exaggerated Moeller technique, very much like Taylor Hawkins and a core to great drumming. At such a young age, she's mastered the technique and it seems to be second nature. Bravo 👏 She also was 2017 Hit Like A Girl Champion. Those girls don't mess around. Btw, I've never heard a drum lose sound quality by hard hitting. The harder you hit 'em, the better they sound. You bring out the tonality of the shell. You can not hit a drum "too hard," in a metal band. She's now sporting a dw kit, good for her, it can handle anything, and sound amazing.

Pau is such a sensation for me because she plays the way she plays. With all of her attitude. And as long as she feels comfortable, she should continue doing the same. And if she breaks 1000 sticks in the process. She is unique and she should keep it that way. If she thinks she has to change something she will find someone who gives her the right tips. She doesn't need someone who has been on the drum set for 3 minutes and shares his wisdom. I think Pau started playing when she was 3 (?) years old. Over 10 years of experience. So she knows what she is doing herself.

  • @racetime1960

Great reaction. As far I know Pau (Paulina) no longer plays so hard (but still breaks a lot of sticks) nor play on hills. She is quite short and when she is playing on venues she uses different drums kits that not always are adjusted / easy adjustable to her size, maybe that is, in part, why she keeps breaking sticks.
