Did this with strawberries a long time ago with the addition of quarter-inch drip irrigating tubing fished up through the bottom of the tower. Strawberries are perennial where I was living so I could leave them just as they were (plus occasional topping dressing with compost) for about five years before it was time for new plants. Had over 200 strawberry plants growing that way.
@@Montasia1112011 Zone 9. They were fine in the winter because it rarely stayed below freezing. Hot summers though, so rather than paint the buckets, like in the video, I wrapped them in a layer of that reflective foil-bubble wrap insulation, and then a double layer of shade cloth with holes cut in each. The whole set up sat on a partially, high-shaded brick patio. The towers that weren't shaded in the afternoon sun I'd throw a couple of old sheer curtains or old white sheets over on the hottest days. Some leaf edges got a little crispy but neither the plants nor fruit suffered much. It was really gourmet compost and soil I'd used and they got a weekly spray of worm casting tea, plus slow-release fertilizer during the season. I had access to A LOT of oak leaves and cedar needles - strawberries are acid-lovers. I placed (not fastened) bucket lids on the top to help retain moisture. Hope you're able to give it a try and it works out for you.
Paint buckets sold in the stores where I live are food grade. They're in the paint department and have a sticker on them saying food grade. And if you flip them over they have numbers in the recycling arrows. When you look those numbers up it will tell you which are food grade.
As long as it's just latex paint the buckets will have a "2" code on the bottom which is food grade. I scrubb them out good of course. The grey buckets have UV Inhibitors in the plastic so they last longer outdoors. Some of the white buckets will get brittle in a couple of years exposure to the sun. Check the dumpsters where they are building new housing for empty paint buckets. You can get half a dozen at a time if you are lucky.
😧😱🤯 💥You just blew my mind. I was going to break down and put tower together from dollar tree pots, but this looks like more fun. And this will probably work better with my current lazy system of composting in place and creating self-watering systems for my plants. Thanks for the tip. 😍
You can get food grade buckets like that from most grocery stores sometimes for free if you just ask and sometimes for a dollar depending on the store.
I've tried it with variety of plants, the composting tube in the center is not necessary, it may even be harmful if the compost is not mature when the plants are still small, because composting process sucks up so much oxygen from the soil
As someone who is used to plant in these buckets, I tell you they have short life time, they will barely last for a year then break into pieces, especially if they are exposed to sun.
You could stabilize these by driving a 48" long piece of rebar down the center hole. You could also raise these by standing the unit on top of an upside down bucket. Of course the rebar would need to be longer. A six foot long piece of 3/8 or 1/2" should work.
Please don't use a bucket that used to hold chemicals or spray paint things when you will be eating food you grow. Use a food grade bucket or even soda bottles before using other types of buckets. They are not food grade and may contain toxins in the plastic and definitely don't release those chemicals by using a torch on the plastic. That being said, this IS a great idea if you use food grade buckets. You can likely get these buckets free or very cheaply at local grocery stores, bakeries, delis, or restaurants if you ask them to save them for you.
Those buckets look the same as food grade buckets that come with a lid. They are often sold for paint too. So long as they haven't been used for paint it will be okay.
Hello i use to think my leafs wouldnt germinate turns out the birds were eating it before i had a chance to see them now all my seedlings get covered with TULLE yes! the decorating fabric i got the idea from Robie from southern california she has a youtube channel too. Now all my seeds have a growing chance i also cover my newly planted seedlings best of luck this planting season!
Spinach here is a cool weather plant one planting early spring and one planting in the beginning of fall but I do think you can get heat-tolerant seeds. Just type in heat-tolerant spinach. good luck
Dear Sir/Madam, u are very creative to plant in such resourceful way. So may i know what type of worms to buy in order to decay the compost thrown into the tube inserted at the centre. Your kind attention n reply is highly appreciated. Thank u, Rena
If you put it touching the ground than worms will come up through the bottom all on their own. You wont need to purchase any. I have even found worms under things on my patio that are not organic like my grill and bricks. They come out at night looking for food and hide under whatever they can when the sun comes out. Try it. Good luck.
Put on earth’s dirt a covered container with kitchen scraps and holes on the bottom. Possibly cover the scraps with a bit of dirt. Water the scraps. After a day or a few days, there will be worms in your kitchen scraps. Dump it all into your container, or just move the container to where you want worms. They make beautiful soil.

Wow!!!! I love that for you! I am so heading to Lowes for more buckets to do strawberry and spinach.

Wow, that's so good to know. Thank for sharing!
Beautiful and beautifully described! I loved the "sacrifice" of the ripe banana!
Those are huge and gorgeous, great idea minus the paint bucket. Use food grade buckets instead. Great music too😊

Pickle buckets

This is such a great idea and money saving as well. Those towers cost so much and you have made your own 😊 I'm most definitely going to try this

Terrific ideas and I REALLY like your choice of music :-))
As someone who is used to plant in these buckets, I tell you they have short life time, they will barely last for a year then break into pieces, especially if they are exposed to sun.
Because those buckets are made this way, so they can be biodegradable, because of ecology reasons.
Experiment with different plants like lettuce kale or something..
Thank you. This is a great idea! I am going to do this.

Wow this is like a Green Stalk! Amazing
Excelente idea para maximizar el espacio y producir mucho. Gracias.
Thank you so much for sharing this DIY video. Look so great !
Brilliant idea!
It’s important to use food grade plastic pails to avoid off gassing from toxins in the pail.
Nice 👍👍
I like this because this might stop squirrels 🐿 from digging up my garden.
Nice video👍👍
good idea,....I love it
Beautiful plants 👍🌹
Very nice👍
Good idea
Lovely..save lots of space
Well done! Let's make sure the buckets are food grade by looking up the number on the bottom.
Lộc chào bạn chúc bạn luôn mạnh khỏe vui vẻ chồng nhiều rau
Super idea! Keep it up!
Maybe normal household buckets could be used. They would need taping together in some way.I wouldn't use paint buckets ever due to toxic residues.
Connect with local restaurants, they often get pickles and other food delivered in food safe versions.
Those buckets look the same as food grade buckets that come with a lid. They are often sold for paint too. So long as they haven't been used for paint it will be okay.
Great work.
Good job 👍👍👍👍👍

There’re are food grade/quality 5 gallon buckets that can be purchased. I think that would work.
Very cool and inexpensive, it's like a worm tower minus the worms
Worms will find their way in. They always do.
Wow
Vraiment intéressant ! Merci.😊
Amazing idea!
Smart and economical. Nice green asian lettuce (?)
Good job 👍
واو جميل ورائع
Great and very helpful idea👍
Just want to ask what kind of soil mixture did you use. Thanks 👍
Is that food safe container what was the number on the bottom it was it a free
The important thing is the usage of buckets that are not food grade especially when you are planting vegetables.
Very nice ty
so, keeps growing after harvest? wow! cool
Ive had this idea of using a heat gun to make angled holes in my grow towers, but i hadnt experimented or come across the right way yet.
Maravilha muito bom está ideia vou fazer como sempre me surpreende suas ideias

Love this idea but concerned about the toxins from the plastic leaching into the soil and plants.
Food grade buckets at Lowe's and HD ~ $8.
Don't worry about it it'll be fine.
Does the food waste have to be emptied at all or does it all get used by the plants?
Shouldn't you use food grade containers?
최고이십니다
How often would you spray the asprin mixture on tomatoes or potatoes?
🇵🇱
Witam
Dziękuję
❤️❤️❤️
Do these need to be food grade containers?
Yes! 👍😜
mos def 👀
So smart
What is that metal object you stuck in the center?
Are the spray paint health for your food? They wouldn’t leak into your food?
Cool ✌️
👍👍👍❤️
A cada x tiempo se echas agua en la compostera?
Sir, is that spinach? What is the Spinach name, having a hard time germinating spinach in my area, thank you. does it grow in summer? heat over 80

Question The bottle top in the middle of this. Do we put water into it, to keep it watered?
I think that the bottle top serves to prevent fruit flies and to retain moisture, and the smell. But I'm not sure.
Love this! 😁👍🏻❤
Looks like a strawberry tower.
cách trồng hay quá ạ

so what is the composition of the soil-like substance that you used please?
👌
Mình ko có thùng Sơn mình trồng trong thùng xốp liệu cây có lên ko ạ
Is there another heating implement that can be used?
Get a torch lighter like for cigars. That should be enough.
Hair dryer, heat gun
