My favorite part about this is how little Grog talks while the party yells and screams at Scanlan. The first thing he asks is about his mother and then apologizes. Really shows just how close those two where.
My favourite moment from the whole campain... I'm not crying, you are!
Especially when Scanlan's immediate reaction to him speaking up is still lashing out. It's really gorgeous seeing Grog embody the advice he gave Keyleth.

I thought it was pretty damn poetic that the supposedly dumbest guy in the party was the first one to show genuine empathy.
Everyone saying the "what's my mothers name?" moment hits the hardest, my opinion its at 23:06 when Sam knew Percy's parents names without looking at any notes. He remembered his parents names when 5 other people couldn't remember his own. That's fucking tough.

Nahh I think he did check his notes for it at 21:06 just to make sure he got it correct. It's subtle and you wouldn't notice it at first glance, but he definitely checks for something.
It’s even better later in the episode, at the very end when they are wrapping up. I believe marisha says something like “been on the CR wiki I see” and Sam responds with “I am the most sincere” as Laura and Liam are throwing things at him and yelling. 😂
You clearly see him look up their names in his notes.

It’s such a dunk move for Scanlan to say Percy’s parents names as he walks out
The most real scene in CR history. Be it an honest mistake or just poor memory. Everybody forgot to ask Scanlan if he was doing okey. (And the names of his parents).

Scanlan was asleep or MIA for 75% of this episode and Sam Riegal still stole the episode with an all-time performance
"You, little elf girl! What's your name?" *Liam and Travis instinctively move away from Laura* I love this episode so much.

The love Grog shows for Scanlan and his understanding of his feelings really shows their friendship. The others at the time really didn't get it or get him
Everyone was pulling at excuse after excuse, it felt like Grog was the only one truly listening
Scanlan was mad that they didn't know his mother's name and still they didn't care to ask, to a point that GROG needed to do that.
“I’m out of my league…” Goes on to be the mvp of the last battle.
*bends reality itself by playing a lute*
Scanlan:
"I am useless... I am out of my League !"
Also Scanlan:
"But I counterspelled it at 8th level !"

Even though I've seen the part where Scanlan goes off many times, I still grimace when he really starts getting upset
This was a heavy one. It's just the utter feeling of realisation and betrayal on the other's faces. Laura's 'My take away from Scanlan is that we all talk too much.' and her 'Fuck him for not saying anything sooner. And fuck us for not asking.' is so important, because they realized right then and there what they had done, even if they never meant for it to be this way. But there's also that sense of betrayal because Scanlan never said anything sooner, even when they asked. Those feeling were so real. It's why Sam breaking the tension with a joke is needed. It's making sure everyone is alright after it.
i feel like that's one part people overlook alot, they did ask him how he was doing, if not regularly, then a few times in the prior episodes at least, and he always lied. Then he comes out with all this anger that they dont know the things he refused to tell them. Not that he's completely unjustified, but it was a dysfunctional dynamic that he kinda fostered.
I wish to God Ashley was there and was able to add her RP to that Rollercoaster
Me too, I can only imagine how it would have gone with Pike in the mix when Scanlan snaps at the rest of Vox Machina, especially considering how he was shaken because of his death and resurrection, and how this was building up for him for a while now... as well as how he felt like he _FAILED_ Kaylie by getting killed by Raishan.
I believe Sam said Pike would be the only one who might have been able to talk Scanlan to stay.
@@m0ejo324 I'm sure she could have too, since they were getting closer in the time before his death against Raishan, and also Pike telling Scanlan she couldn't raise Kaylie alone when trying to heal him when he was dying.

I love Travis’ appreciation of the turnaround of “I’m a really good liar”. Dude is able to be completely in the rp, remove it entirely from any personal stakes and just enjoy watching his friend perform this scene masterfully
I never liked how everyone felt like they had to yell and lecture Scanlan. They obviously didn’t understand how they fucked up and their reaction to it just gives me the ick 😢 I don’t understand when people respond to sadness with anger
It's a common defensive reaction that attempts to places the fault at someone else. This way you don't have to admit to any wrong doing.
I think that's what makes this moment so great though. It feels real because the players react impulsively and unfairly as the characters would. It makes it feel more real and impactful.
i mean, he did plenty of yelling too. Not always easy to bring the energy down once it starts.

I appreciate that, despite the shock, the players found a way to incorporate Tary into the party, even though there was an impulse to tell him to take a hike. It's good when the players know the assignment is to say "yes and" or "yes but."
I love how even at this point they did not necessarily realize how big of a deal they were going to become, with Liam thinking Sam was wrapping up
Vax being unable to talk about Scanlan expect in relationship to himself is so telling. “I changed my life because of you, you could crush me, I thought you had it all figured out and wanted to be like you”
Most of them don’t come off great during this but Vax stands out to me as someone that is trying to be less self-centered in their own life
You hit the nail on the head, and they cried when they realized. Which makes Terry so fukin funny. 😆 glad you liked it.

Percy and Keyleth too! Which is the point Scanlan was making. The two it didn't really apply to were Grog and Pike and those are the two he goes out of his way to repair his relationship with and apologize to when he comes back.
@@riofernandes8891 I think Keyleth acts fundamentally different from Vax, Vex, or Percy- not as good a reaction as Grog, but I don't think it's equivalent to the former 3

Grogs responses are on point, All he says in the room is I'm sorry and what was your mom's name. And outside with Percy his response Is I don't know many things but I do know that
Yup. The rest makes it about themselves not Scanlan.
You can see how tense it is for 35 minutes watching this scene unfold, until Sam pipes in with a joke to let the group know to take it easy :)
I wish Scanlan had said something along the lines of "I recall you telling me that I'm just a dude Vex, and maybe that's all I really am." to Vex when she tried to tell him she thought he was useful
I'm just impressed about how -into it- he got, you can see the veins in his throat pop while he's screaming. The dedication alone

Scanlan: “My Spells. Without them, I’m just a dude. I know.”
Then he walks out.
I’d just love to know what the text message was that Sam sent to Matt when he was like, “Hey, so I feel like Scanlan’s gotta leave the group after this.”
He must have talked with Matt at some point about having a backup character, and Sam loves the long game, so I'm guessing it's something more on the realm of "It's time, operation Goldilocks is on"
There's a moment, I can't remember the exact episode, but it's maybe 4 or 5 before this one, where they are making fun of Scanlan for being weak and not strong like them and I swear you can see a look cross Sam's face. I believe to this day that that's when the plan was put in motion and it was only a matter of time before he found the right moment.

I love how sam is the one who breaks the tension at the table with the joke about going to the next room.
Saying he was afraid about talking to his daughter in comparison to fighting ancient dragons is such a beautiful stroke
There's only two times I cried real tears during Critical Role. Both were Sam scenes... this was one of them.

Bear in mind,Sam had never played DnD before VM, likewise Travis. Nevertheless between the two of them they provide story moments like these..
Just getting back into D and D and tabletop gaming after a twenty-year hiatus and started seeing mentions of the bard's lament and had to look it up. Gotta say, even without any context of any of the characters this was deep. Hats off to Sam for bringing something so raw to his roleplaying and forcing the rest to react in a similar fashion. And the guy who plays grog asking his mothers name after like twenty minutes of pure dysfunction damn near made me cry. Gonna have to watch all their sessions now.
I have a feeling that this is the moment Talesin created such a profound respect for the dead and death in D&D storytelling that it sparked the idea for Caduceus. Just a feeling.

I know that this video primarily focuses on Scanlan, but re-watching Tary's introduction, I realized something. The title of his book which we see in C2 is The Daring Trials and Tribulations of Sir Taryon Darrington. What, in this scene, does Percy suggest as a title? The Daring Trials and Tribulations of Taryon Darrington. Like, I'm sorry, but considering what happens later in this arc, this just sends me into a inhuman state of joy. I don't know if Sam has ever commented on the title, but god dammit, that just makes me smile. X3

I enjoyed so many moments before this episode but this is honestly what made me fall in love with this cast.
I'm really excited to see this animated on the show just because of how gut wrenching it is, I really hope they leave in Grog asking what his mother's name is. It's the sweetest small detail that shows just how much Grog cares and feels bad.
For some reason the image of a bunch of people dragging a beholder into a field and beating the shit out of it just kills me.
A smaller beholder...they probably just brought him a gazer because they knew he wouldn't know the difference.

Bards lament is the most powerful role playing bar none.
He got all the girls on the cast to cry, and it was a gag. Fucking legend.
I love the fact that Sam gets affected by his pwn stuff too. This and somrthing he does toward the end of ExU Calamity are epic examples of his brilliance and how he even affects himself sometimes. Its amazing!

I hope so too, but how one go about converting this into the animated show. In the show the players expressions and reactions are separated from their characters.
It will be different, they can work the anger into the grief and, little elf girl, watching the characters react and try and vanish will be hilarious.
Did it? Can't imagine it. They cut out all the tension inside of VM for the show. Like Tiberius isn't even there and everything else.

I usually love percys roleplay but all be did at that point was insult scanlan and his daughter, which very much ignored his character growth since finding out about kaylee, which kinda proved scanlans point that he's just a funny man to them and they don't know him beyond surface level or what he was in the early eps
I've had arguments with people I love like this...they captured how uncomfortable and devastating that can be.

It takes Vex flying in and going "ayo wtf are y'all doing" for them to stop. I love them as both players and characters, but they just straight up took their frustration out on Tary
@@GeeGe. They stopped before Vex flew in, saying "Hey, this is what you're gonna be up against in Nine Hells? You sure you want to join?" And connected with him more after hearing why he was out 'adventuring'.

Because they treated his life as a joke, because he is a joke, he is the comedic relief. That's his role, the role he chose and upheld...until, slowly but surely and then all at once: Scanlan realized he could no longer live like that.
By then however, it was far too late for anyone to do anything healthy about it.
He needed to leave, to reset.
And also to be in the right place at the right time to warn the others about Vecna's impending return, or else Vox Machina may have only learned of this when Thar Amphala arrived in Illsyra.

It’s so true how little they cared to an extent. They all used magic for selfish things, they could’ve easily done it to get what they wanted from him. Hold person, zone of truth, anything, but they didn’t.
I am really envy of Matt... my Players can't talk a minute amongst themselves...
It's a skill that takes time to develop. Some are better at it than others. But these are professionals, they are so good they get paid to do it.
Wish my DM would give more attention to Role-playing instead of focusing everything on combat and trying to backseat play our characters himself.

I’m not sure if it’s because I got lucky with my friends but whenever I say “what are you guys doing?” They start yammering about whatever like they were waiting for me to shut up. I don’t mind of course I love it makes me feel they really feel like they are in my world. Hope you found a better game with a even better dm

I've always been impressed by Sam, and his ability to create a character who is, honestly, both equal parts scumbag who needs his ass kicked, and the MVP.
Like this whole rant is so good, because it really shows what a piece of shit Scanlan can be, while also (almost) making sense. Like, he's completely full of shit, but he's got juuuuust enough legit ammo that you can see how he's rationalizing it.
Like, you want nothing more than for Grog to lop his stupid head off.....and then he's later the, as I said, MVP.
Hats off to Sam.

this is hard to watch... scanlan is my favorite dnd character in all of my DnD experience. when he tells the others that he feels out of his league, he is really out of their league. by far.
How are they going to compress this for the show. Vax & Vex, Percy and Grog are important but Pike could cover Percy & Vex's points for the most part and be more impactful maybe
Well it will be a few minutes long at most, instead of nearly an hour.
Everyone will probably have 2-3 lines, but they will all be well-engineered.
