Yes, the Smetana tone poems are such wonderful pieces of music! When I visited Prague a few years ago I was very lucky in finding an old Supraphon LP of Neumann conducting the Czech Phil in Richard III, Haakon Jarl, Wallenstein's Camp and the Shakespearean March. Thanks so much for the video, Dave!

Wow that Bach piece is thrilling. I'm so glad to learn of it. I don't think I've ever heard a piece by Bach that has such an exciting introduction. Bach intends to grab your attention with that one. It reminds me of the Brandenburg concertos. Thanks Dave

Szell’s recording of the Faust Overture is fantastic. Love the liebeslieder waltzes performances from Marlboro w/ Fleisher, Serkin, Benita Valente, Martial Singher and others.
Paired with the best Der Hirt auf dem felsen, and fantastic album of neglected masterworks.

Sibelius piano music is worth a listen... some real gems there. He was a great mimic on piano sounding so like Schuman or Debussy whom he admired. And embarrassingly romantic at times.

I remember your "prequel" video about Stravinsky's "The Firebird", when you mentioned Rimsky Korsakov's "Night on Mount Triglav"! I bought the Naxos' record and I got totally stunned! Thank you Dave for another terrific video, as usual I'll check out all your suggestions.

Swanwhite is absolutely lovely. It’s a fabulous entry point to the undiscovered treasures of Sibelius’s theatre music. The Tempest aside, his music for Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s Everyman is also quite fascinating. The soundworld is the dark space between the 4th and 5th symphonies. I’ll bet Bernard Herrmann knew this music.

Thanks for mentioning Night on Mt. Triglav! I've been promoting it for almost 40 years, when that first Marco Polo recording came out. It would make a great piece for Halloween. Unfortunately, the required pan pipes make performances really difficult, unless Zamfir lives nearby. It's surprising how few recordings there are, too.

I love Bruckner, and I have to confess: I don't know really WHY... Strangely enough I have to confess, believe it or not: I love Celibidaches interpretation of the finale of Bruckners 4th. Maybe or because it is the first interpretation I ever have heard of this finale (it really stucks in my brain ;-D like everything you have heard first time of genius composers') So.. enough of my bad English confessions.... still waiting on my video about Paul Westhoffs Violin Sonatas! Keep on listening, Maestro Hurwitz! Love your channel!

Putting my vote in for Stravinsky's Song of the Nightingale as neglected masterpiece.

I'm pleased that you have the Schubert A-flat major mass on your list. I purchased the recording by Denis Russell Davies on Nonesuch years ago in the vinyl era and the music is indeed special. No clue if there is a good modern recording.

Thanks for mentioning the Smetana. Kubelik's recording of the tone poems appears to be available in a twofer with his Boston Ma Vlast and Levine's Bartered Bride excerpts - a real bargain!

I'm so glad you talked about the Bach Aelous. Call me heretical, shallow, call me irresponsible but generally speaking I would much rather listen to one of Bach's secular cantatas then the sacred ones. Opera companies used to include Phoebus and Pan on double bills.
I love the Coffee Cantata, preferably with ☕️.
Re the Brahms, whenever Toscanini did a Brahms cycle he always included the Liebeslieder Waltzes, first set, using a dozen singers, and sometimes on mixed programs. He also gave the Serenade No.2 a lot of exposure and that still seems to be a hidden masterpiece though Bernstein made a fine recording.

The entire ballet opera ,,Mlada" is a masterpiece - at least the music, the libretto is somewhat unsuccessful.

I sang in the Lieberslieder Waltzes a few years ago. Great fun indeed and I have a recording of this by Gachinger Kantorei on a low price double CD with violin concerto and overtures. And my record collection includes several of your recommendations.

If my memory is not playing a trick on me, there are actually two versions (both by Smetana) of Wallenstein's camp, one in three sections and a later condensed version.

What really bugs me sometimes is the somewhat perfunctory nature of classical music business. Yes, there is only so much room in an event calendar of an orchestra, but all too often intendants and conductors just pick more or less the same pieces to the programs. Even major composers are represented by limited number of works and then the audience starts to think that there's something wrong with the lesser-known works. Often that is far from the truth and that's why music lovers need to be reminded of the unsung gems. Just as you have so diligently done.
P.S. I'm sorry for your loss, losing a pet is not a small deal. Pets leave paw prints on one's heart. ♥

    Dear Mr Hurwitz!
May I suggest two topics for you to consider to make a talk about.1 Pieces you should avoid listening to. Eg. Pfitzner's Palestrina. and 2 Pieces you should listening to once every 10 years. Eg. Wagner's Lohengrin.
    Best wishes Fred.

It's strange I haven't taken to the Liebeslieder Waltzes, because I love Brahms' part songs with piano from the old Nonesuch disc called Gypsy Songs, which includes some Schumann, also. They're wonderfully lyrical. They are hardly available except on that disc, which itself has practically disappeared. So disappointing.

I've found that playing PDQ for high school music appreciation doesn't work..the humor hasn't held up. Same with Victor borge..the don't laugh once..and usually find it embarrassingly stupid..the only one they still seem to get, of all things, is Anna Russell

@@chadweirick67 I think PDQ requires a grounding in baroque music practices and styles. But they who do not laugh at Schickele's Adventures in Music Appreciation and the play by play coverage of the first mvt of the Beethoven 5th is fit for strategems, treasons, and spoils.
