Load bearing drywall screws /s

The idiot who lived at my house before me hung a gate with them, those all broke off, gate was terrible anyways thats gone. And the gutters too, which will be a project soon enough. But then again everything he did was terrible
Exactly..that why you use special nails called Tico..
I was going to say: The better way is to use screws and nails. Nails by themselves will pull out. Screws by themselves will shear(break). Use both and neither will happen😊

if you want to take 3x as long to do a job. it completely unnecessary.
If you use nails on the hanger instead of those dumb screws, it seems like a decent tip. It keeps the joist in position.
@@KingBeevr "if you want to take 3x as long to do a job. it completely unnecessary."
For people wondering why all the trades workers here are having a conniption about the drywall screws, it's that they're made of hard, brittle steel that will snap as the joists move over time with changes in temperature and humidity. I don't want to get too into weeds with the technicalities here, but let's just say it's not ideal when the fastners that hold your house together fail.
Plus...they ARE NOT galvanized...perfectly said
not to mention....rust!
This post was just asking for wrath.
If you screw a piece of plywood down to a piece of 2 by or another piece of plywood and run the screw all the way down, a regular screw starts to countersink into the face of the wood, if you do the same thing with a drywall screw it just shears the head of the screw off once it goes tight. They are not good for anything but drywall
@@thefinalkayakboss Absolutely! That's why they call them drywall screws.

I never use galvanized, even inside only stainless steel SPAX screws
Most would have put the line over 3/4 of an inch and lined the edge of the joist with that ensuring it is not tilted over. of course you have to calculate that from the start and an X on the side you want the joist to be on help so everyone knows where the next one goes. No guessing where the centre of the joist is that way.
Joe - umm, *experience

drywall screws aside.. if you want to use up even more of your time and get it even more anally aligned, drill a viewport hole in the alignment plank and mark the center of the end of your joist.. screw the plank on so you can see the mark, line them up perfectly.
Of course.. a much faster way to get the result you are looking for is to just create create a template to hang over the rim joist. Then cut a very small length of joist from some scrap to set in the hangar with a center mark on it.... hang on the template to space downward, place hanger, slide in the small marker piece... achieve the same result in 10 seconds.
Especially with PT joists that vary in size.

Using drywall screws for a deck is not recommended. They are not designed to withstand outdoor conditions or support the weight and stress that a deck experiences. It's best to use screws specifically made for decking, which are corrosion-resistant and built to handle outdoor environments.
It's more about the shear strength, but for sure drywall screws will rust.
@@SaucyOperator Both screws and twist nails have their advantages and disadvantages for deck construction. Screws tend to provide a stronger hold and are less likely to work loose over time, making them a popular choice for decks. Twist nails, on the other hand, can be quicker to install and are often less expensive, but they may not offer the same level of stability as screws. Ultimately, the best choice depends on factors such as budget, personal preference, and the specific requirements of your deck project.
@@BabashiSensei We're talking about the hangers man. Not assembly of the deck boards, pickets, or railings. Specifically joist hangers. You can nail them or use screws designed for hangers, but they better have the shear strength recommended. Otherwise you will have issues.
