  • Is Critical Theory Practical?
You’re in a conversation and someone says, “Critical theory helps identify and end oppression, so anyone who cares about putting a stop to oppression should support critical theory.”
    What would you say?
Critical theory is the idea that any human society can be divided into two groups: those who have power and those who don’t. According to critical theory, those who have power always oppress those who don’t. Therefore any institution, relationship, and belief system established by those in power is best understood as a tool of oppression.
The categories of oppressor and oppressed can be further divided into smaller categories based on things like race, gender, religion, immigration status, income, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Whether you are an oppressor or one of the oppressed is determined by your group identity.
As a result, almost everything, including institutions like police, government, religion, and the family are tools used by some to oppress those in other groups.
Although all of us should care about ending unjust oppression, critical theory is not helpful in doing this, and here are four reasons why.
First, power and oppression does not explain everything.
Second, power and privilege are relative concepts.
Third, lived experience is not an infallible guide to truth.
Fourth, Critical theory is self-defeating because it ignores the power dynamics it creates.

Your source material for this would be great. I've been in a lot of conversations with Christians lately on Critical Theory and these criticism are all being leveled at CT within the Christian community. However, when I read source material on CT, most of these principles are not actually part of CT or they are gross misrepresentations. I feel more like Christians are critiquing the current social movement, which may include elements of CT, but they're incorrectly conflating the two - kind of like how Christianity gets blamed for the Crusades and we all say "but that wasn't Christianity, that was state-sponsored warfare by soldiers with crosses on their shields".
A quick response to your points based on what I've found thus far:
Intro - Critical Theory as originated in the School of Frankfurt actually groups people into oppressed and oppressor, not those with or without power.. Power is understood as a force for either domination or emancipation. The goal is emancipation from oppression and a truly democratized society.
1 - CT does not view causation and resolution in such a narrow field; in fact they expressly seek a multi-disciplinary approach through fields of sociology, psychology, anthropology, and other disciplines in order to have a holistic understanding of the context in which oppression takes place so that practical solutions can be determined.
2 - CT recognizes that power and privilege are relative concepts and in our complex societies you may be both the oppressed and oppressor depending on the context. This doesn't negate the expressed aim of CT, merely recognizes the fact that solutions can't be 1-dimensional.
3 - I have yet to find any CT source material or practitioners of CT who espouse this idea. I believe this idea does exist within current social movements in the US but I think it's being erroneously conflated with CT.
4 - This point is predicated on point 3 which is false, so point 4 must also be false. Even if point 3 were true, to say CT is self defeating makes its sound like the entire paradigm is unable to achieve it's end-goal. You don't throw out an entire philosophical approach because of a single point of cognitive dissonance. You critique it and then offer a revision that would allow the the end-game to be effectively achieved (eg "lived experience must be reconciled with the broader shared experiences of the community with the goal of reconciliation so that power dynamics are removed and people are able too live in true equality").

There's no greater oppression and distortion of reality than artificially forcing equal outcomes. The only way you get there is through coercion and force - subjugation of the individual. Pure evil with no core and no principles - truth itself is discarded if it doesn't fit the best interest of praxis. Everything is to be twisted to fit a cultish narrative and structure - all without testability or openness (arrogant sophistry at best). The whole thing is an emotional manipulation and language is itself coopted for the cause. The manipulations come with intentionality so that repulsive concepts become more palatable under the guise of being something else (and so criticisms can be ignored by resorting to smears rather than examination). It's cynicism extended to the whole world but all the while forgetting that the critically conscious "theorists" are the ones who best meet its uncharitable definitions.

    Critical Theory??
One thing, if it is based solely on our group identity, and not on any individual actions...
Why should I do anything at all?? Because according to the group identity I'm in, it doesn't matter what I do, it's going to be automatically one thing or the other.
Second thought, if there is Always the opressed & the oppressors... The only result of changing anything, is that I will have changed only who is oppressing...
And added some groups to those who are oppressed. And judging by things like the French Revolution... Switching those around, tends to lead to worse oppression by those formerly oppressed.

Yeah, NO! These arguments are superficial and misleading as they mix situational and contextual dynamics with systematic power dynamics e.g. those in power in the US have established systems to uphold their power as in school systems. The idea that Black kids get punished at drastically higher rates for the same behavior (www.gao.gov/products/gao-18-258) is a result of that unequal power dynamic. It's equally evident the justice system, healthcare, religious institutions, and many others. Don't have time to get the other supporting articles right now. See what you can find!

I think that was the weakest point. For instance, critical race theories dont usually propose that black people should take the disproportionate power white people have and become the oppressors. They usually advocate for equality of power amongst the races, as i understand it anyway.
I think he should have spent more time attacking the reasoning, like the way they cherry pick attributes for their hierarchy of oppression tables. They leave out things like mental health because your class, race, gender and sexual orientation does not protect you from getting serious and/or long term mental health conditions that can have more impact in terms of social stigma/prejudice, unemployment, dangerous encounters with law enforcement, political marginalization, neglectful social care and troubled relationships. If they included it, it would mean you would have to accept that a middleclass, white male could be more systemically and socially oppressed than a black, gay trans person who has their mental health.

The catagories of oppression are also highly subjective and negligent. If you were being honest when looking at how attributes (or the perception of such) negatively affects peoples lives -- interpersonally and systemically -- mental health would be at the top of your list.
If youre a middle class white male with a significant and/or long term mental health condition, it is likely that the societal stigma/prejudice affecting employment, treatment by institutions and correlating social and political marginalization is going to be far more pernicious and impactful than the struggles of a black, lesbian trans woman who has her mental health.
Adding mental health completely undermines the assumptions that factor into the hierarchy of oppression in critical theory, but in reality, if you were being honest, it would be at the top of the list.

Critical theory is an approach to social philosophy that focuses on reflective assessment and critique of society and culture in order to reveal and challenge power structures. Keyword POWER STRUCTURE, not in any way or form oppression. Yes, there may exist some roads of critical theory that look at oppression, but it's all about the dynamic. In many cases, power should not be looked at as either evil or good, but neutral and in many cases productive. And both sides have some power, and they co-exist to a certain degree. There isn't one instance where one has ALL the power and the other has none, at least not if you followed critical theory. Also, this is ONE theory, to get a complete picture of anything multiple angles should be looked at, be open to different world views there is no fix-all theory. This is some of the most bias shit I have ever seen, and even I am not such a fan of social theory, but at least get it right...

    Competition and the Christian
In Gods Bible in the book of Galatians chapter 5 verses 19-21 it reads, Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21 Envying's, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. The above scripture mentions variance , emulation, wrath and strife, God also hates pride. These attributes are present in competition and are fruits of sin. Firstly the sin of Variance is defined as contention or strife which I believe is caused by disagreements mainly when things don't go how one team wants it to go, we often see players fight against other teams, some even resort to cheating which is also unfair and is an unrighteous practice, this in turn leads to rivalry which involves both teams having some form of strife between them. Also the sin of Variance is very common in competitive sports. Now there is nothing wrong in doing bodily exercise as bodily exercise is good for the body. But the problem is with competitive Sports. Secondly the sin of Emulations is defined as trying to become equal or to rise above another , this sin is also a common practice in competitive Sports, even Satan when he rebelled against God had said that he would rise above God and be like God. Isaiah 14-13-14 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. When one sport player competes, he or she is always trying to rise above the opponent to become the best, this is what God hates as Satan had the same mentality in that he told himself he would become like the most high and rise above him, this is the sin of emulation. Today many who compete in sport try to boost their self esteem by making themselves become the best, thus, because of pride they want to become like the most high in their field of Sport so that everyone would revere then and treat them like a God which is also the sin of idolatry and covetousness. The Scripture I quoted above also mentioned wrath and strife and we all know that these are also the fruits of sports.Sports is also involved with money making for greed. One doesn't need to become part of competitive sports in order to come out of poverty in the same way one doesn't need to become a prostitute to get out of poverty. God can provide for us and our needs no matter the circumstance without us having to join in the sin. Another excuse some use to justify sports is that it helps to unite and it helps take away depression and it brings peace. But this I say is only a false way to bring peace because usually as the game is over we go back to fighting one another and we go back to the sin of drunkedness and then war and depression starts again because the foundation was built on sand rather than on the Rock. If you want to be truly free you must build on the Rock Jesus Christ rather than on the sand, ask Jesus to free you from depression, strife and fighting and he will, you don't need to join in the sin of competitive sport to get a false relief from depression.
Ask God for the endurance to overcome the temptation to watch competitive sport. Many wonder why following sports is wrong, of the world, and not for Christians. This Christian generation in general is captivated by rugby, the World Cup, and various other things that the world chases after and seeks to entertain themselves by. Christians say, Well what is wrong with following the rugby? Following sport? What is wrong with that? When I came to Jesus Christ, I was an athlete who strove hard in my sport. I was very interested in sports and I followed sports avidly. But when I came to Jesus and I knew that I was wrong before God, and I repented and Jesus came to me and I realized the reality of the cross and how Jesus Christ has risen again, THEN the interest of the world in me DIED. The world's interest in me was crucified. That's what also happened to apostle Paul. I read you his words in Galatians 6 verse 14 where he says, As for me I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world's interest in me has also died. It doesn't matter whether we have been circumcised or not, what counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation. Dear friend, have you been transformed into a new creation? Has the world's interest in you died because of the cross? Many Christians profess faith in the cross, yet if the cross really was in their life, the power of Jesus, then the world interest would be CRUCIFIED in them. That's what happened to me: before I came to Jesus, I was still a Christian, I still believed in Jesus Christ, but after I came to him for real in seriousness of heart, and when he came to be with me making me a new creation, then the world's interest died in me, and I died to the world's interest as Paul said. Sport is the world's interest, along with a lot of other things. I'm not saying every single thing is the world's interest, such as having a family, playing sport with your family or friends in the park is a sin, no!, but I am talking about making things an idol in your life that the world strives after, because all they think about on the weekend is beer and football. That interest in me has been crucified by the cross, and that's why I no longer care about finding out about my sport and what's going on. I no longer care about the sport news. This is such a big idol in so many men's lives. All they live for is the sport news and the sporting scoreboards. You see friends, when we don't have the cross in us, and when we are not following Jesus, and we are just claiming his name yet we don't know him, then the world's interest is not going to be crucified in us, and you are still going to be following the world and its way. That is why I sincerely WARN you today: Now there is a difference between competitive Sport and bodily exercise, in fact the Bible says that bodily exercise is good for the human body so we should exercise. On another note, If you are a Christian who hasn't had the world's desire crucified in you yet, I warn you to come out of your path. You are not right before God. If you are just interested in the sport and the latest scoreboard, you don't have the cross in you and you are not on your way to the kingdom of God. As Paul said, what counts is whether or not we have been transformed into a new creation. He said, Because of the cross my interest in this world has been crucified and the world's interest in me has also died. Has that happened to you? It happened to me when I came to Christ for real and he came into my life. Has it happened for you? Or are you still following the world being God’s enemy? Dear friend, it's time to take a stand in faith. It's time to separate yourself from the world, and to come to Christ fully submitting yourself to the cross in your life so that the power of the cross will kill the desire of the world in you and the world's interest be killed in you. It is only through the power of Christ for real. The only way to get that is to pray for real, seek the Lord. You’re not headed to heaven while you have the world in you, my friend. You are not headed to the kingdom of God if you call yourself a Christian, but the world's desires and interests haven't been crucified in you, according to what the world chases after. We all know what the world chases after: they chase after wine, women, song, and sport, and godless entertainment, (and money) and like I said not every single thing is worldly, but we know the big idols of this world and we have to be separate from them, and chasing after sport is one of those idols. Be separate, come out from the world my children says the Lord , be ready or be left behind.
Can Christians be athletes? I used to be an athlete for a time, and I used to claim Christ. During that time, the Lord kept putting into my heart, the fear that when I stood before him one day, I would have NOTHING TO SHOW. I used to ask myself: If I stood before the Lord today, would he regard my athletic performances and results as FRUIT? And I knew I was lying to myself if I thought that he would. Because I knew that the WAY IS NARROW to the kingdom of God. So at a later time, I decided to come back to the Lord for real, and obey and follow him. I want to tell you that God has NO fellowship with the world and he hates the way of the world. As we read in 1 John chapter 2: Love not the world, neither the things that are IN the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is NOT in him. For all that is in the world: the lusts of the eyes, the lusts of the flesh and the pride of life, are not of the Father but of the world. And the world is passing away with all of its lusts thereof, but he who does the will of God, abides with the Lord forever. You see my friends, SPORT represents the WORLD CUP right now, and all the things people strive after in this world: they represent, the LUSTS OF THE EYES, THE PRIDE OF LIFE, AND THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH. When we follow our own selfish ambition, we are not being pleasing to God. We are not serving the Lord. We are FAR from Jesus. You cannot serve Jesus and NOT deny yourself. Jesus said, If any man wants to follow me, he must pick up his cross and deny himself. You cannot pick up your cross and deny yourself if you are being enthralled by the world cup and the things of this world.Because you are a friend of the world, doing the same things they do while they are perishing on the path of destruction

In response to a bunch of comments here: critical theory states that oppressors make use of a system that furthers social injustice and opression. It does not say that people actively oppress others just for their own gain (even though some do).
I, for example, while I am a feminist and try to be anti-racist, am aware that I am making use of an oppressive system to live comfortably.
Furthermore, organizations like schools, hospitals, churches or whatever all have their own oppressive systems while having a position in bigger systems that may increase social injustice (where do you find the good schools? How are they funded? What genders do people in high positions have?)
Even in families you find power dynamics. Who does the house work, even after coming home from work? Who is more likely to loose their job due to childcare? But also: Who is less likely to get the kids after a divorce and has higher suicide rates? (it's men fyi) Why is that?
We all are effected by the power dynamics of our society. I advice you all to stop hating on CT for a minute and start looking at different videos than this one.

The reason why lived experiences are seen so important is because classical sociological theory is witten exclusively by white men, which meant that the opression of women and other minorities wasn't even mentioned in most classical frameworks. Ofcourse people can be wrong about their experiences, but the fact that most systems of opression weren't even mentioned publicly before minorities spoke up says a lot.

This video is kind of a 2-Dimensional representation. At times its arguments are Appealing To Extremes. People tend to assume and represent theories as drastic absolutes instead of the spectrum they often are. The same way Authoritarians and Libertarians represent their opposite viewpoint in arguments. Strawman anarchists or strawman hiveminds.

This is very blatantly intellectually dishonest and inaccurate. The point of Critical Theory is that it IS a theory. It's being developed through the use of dialectical materialism (Neomarxism) and scientific study. It is not INTENDED to be biased. The theory is a theory because the hypothesis (i.e. the original claim made by the Frankfurt School) has shown evidence. If you disagreed, then you should have argued scientifically, although I doubt you lot care much about the scientific method. Critical Theory is part of the wider Dialectics, which is the most scientific form of critical analysis. If you are interested in the truth I recommend familiarizing yourself with Marxian and Neomarxian philosophy.

    • @lukaakiba-hajim8197
      @lukaakiba-hajim8197 3 роки тому

I SHOULD ADDITIONALLY CLARIFY THAT DIALECTICS IS METANALYTICAL, IF YOU ARE TAKING HEGEL LITERALLY THEN YOU MISUNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES HEGEL IMPORTANT. Critical theory is a SOCIOLOGICAL theory which means it is the METANALYSIS of society. Metanalyses and scientific analysis are different, and that's where materialism is important in the ordeal.
