I have a bit of a feeling that „Bottom‘s Dream“ and the etym theory are a bit of a deterrent and so get in the way of people's perception of Schmidt. If Schmidt's incredible humor and wordplay from Woods also ignites in English, I can also only recommend the reading order for beginners: "Scenes from the Life of a Faun", "Dark Mirrors" and "Republica Intelligentsia". Once you're "in", it will also be a lot of fun with "B/Moondocks". In the late work I find "The School for Atheists" and "Abend mit Goldrand" (both without a first-person narrator, by the way) are great and I've only read parts of "Zettel's Traum" occasionally. I'm waiting for someone to make a reading book out of the best parts (there's already an attempt, but it obviously doesn't hit the best spots). ...and Schmidt as the inventor of emojis! Wonderful! 28:24 The German title ("eine MärchenPosse - 55 Szenen aus der Lä/e/Endlichkeit für Gönner der Verschreibk/Kunst") is nowhere near as explicit as the translated version (In "MärchenPosse" the "Po" (butt) is not orthographically emphasized, the different versions Ländlichkeit/Lendlichkeit/Endlichkeit, are "Country life", "Life of the hip" and "Finiteness").

Glad you are going down this rabbit hole. I started collecting WTV years before I finally let the damn burst, and I feel the potential energy with Schmidt getting close to a point of action. This was nice to remind me to not just get my ass into gear on Schmidt, but Moore and A. Theroux. It is also time to get back to Vollmann's RURD. Probably more of a kick in my pants than I intended by watching this.
Happy to provide a little motivation! Colour me jealous that you have a copy of RU&RD (unabridged, I assume). I must get started on Theroux. I've got the Cat sitting on my shelf collecting dust.
For a couple months now I've been eyeing The School for Atheists but not pulling the trigger. I'll take this as a sign that it's time to finally get into Schmidt.

A quick flip through it reveals occasional pages split into multiple columns of text, boxes split apart from the main text and an obscene number of parentheses (not that there's anything wrong with that). If the goal is to intimidate the average reader, this'll do it. Then I read the introduction by John E. Woods. "What you hold in your hand is, given its heft and shape, obviously an unusual novel. A quick thumb-through, and you will probably guess it belongs to a genre that has on occasion been tagged as metafiction". The introduction opens by accurately describing my initial gut reaction to the book lol
I was one of those who bought BD the week it was published from the Strand in NYC, $62 usd. Before it left stores I saw it while I was traveling, in Portland, Oregon marked down to $45 usd. Likewise all of the Dalkey Schmidt paperbacks languished for years in remainder bins-once again at Strand circa 2015 or so I think each Dalkey paperback (novellas, stories, Nobodaddy etc) was around $4. All i mean to say by this, as opposed to bragging, is that it's remarkable all of these books have been published at all given that for YEARS there has been very little to no interest in them. Nice to hear there is interest now!
I'm glad you had the foresight to snag it while it was still affordable! I had never even heard the name "Arno Schmidt" when it was released. Did you get around to reading much from him? Even the short stuff is worth your time.
@@wastemailinglist726 I've read a chunk of BD, Nobodaddy, and the Radio Dialogs. Have the Two Novels and School for Atheists in the queue, waiting for the desire to hit. For me, BD (having read about 1/15 aka 100 a3 size pages) may not be worth the effort. It's interesting, beautiful, and impressive, but it is also incredibly repetitive, often misogynistic/creepy in the way Theroux is (which is to say, at a certain point, one wonders...)-all this even within the sampling of 100 pages. I like having it, and am not tempted to sell it, but I wonder what about it convinced Arno to keep going, let alone John Woods to translate (unless in both cases it was just the challenge). On which note, are you familiar with that other giant of German language obscurity and readerly hostility, Marianne Fritz? Her novel "Dessen Sprache du nicht verstehst" may thwart Schmidt's own ambitions, and has the honor of Thomas Bernhard declaring it: "3,000 pages of mindless proletarian trash." Her unfinished novel Naturgemäß runs 5500 pages. With John Woods dead, however, I think it's a close to 0% chance any of it makes the jump, she is supposedly hardly read in German. Adrian Nathan West has translated her first quite conventional novel, and it's fine, though nothing special.
Im not getting my hopes too high… if the way they’ve handled the release of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling is any indication of how this new leadership does things at Dalkey, then it’ll be over a decade before we see any Schmidt.
Look, you may very well be right but I like to remain optimistic. If there's a chance for any new Schmidt on the horizon, I welcome it (even if it takes awhile). the Dalkey MMMD fumble was a printer's problem moreso than anything else, from what I hear.
allegedly for books of that length it becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to find willing printers
