  • This is part 1 of a 3 day ice camping and ice fishing trip my dad son and I did. We found a small high mountain lake with some good ice and great fishing. Every night was below 0 with the coldest night at -31.

Thank you! It is so much fun to ice camp! We haven’t made it out this year yet but really hoping to be able to before the season ends.

Greetings from Canada !!! I Agree - if you want to limit your flood ice - don't shovel the snow off the ice. It also insulates under you much better AND helps prevent your floor from sticking to ice. Trust me, we do lot's of overnighters on the ice and learned a few things the "hard way". This was one of them. We also lay some rubber roll up mats over floor (helps seal the cracks) and a second insulated tarp over roof (like a fly). We can heat a similar sized tent with a very small stove (similar but smaller than you have there) and keep it in the 60's to 70's even in 40 below weather. Good video - always cool to see how other folks set up their camps.

Hey, I agree with you. We have done it both ways but we do try to leave snow on the ice for that reason. That is a good idea using the rubber roll up mats. I have used throw rugs before but I am going to have to look into the rubber mats now hahaha. Thank you for the ideas. Good luck this season and stay safe on the ice!!! Thank you for watching and for your comment!

I’d leave the snow there and put that floor overtop. Good insulation and keeps the water at bay

We have done it both ways depending on the situation. This one was a bit of a test to see how the ice would handle the wood stove heat and how bad it would melt out under it. One thing we have found is setting in one place for a few days, the floor would kind of start to slope and slide apart. We think we have a fix for it that we are going to play with this coming season tho. Thank you for watching and for your comment!!!

Thank you, I did make the stove jack for the pipe to go through. Otter does not offer anything for a wood stove add on to the huts unfortunately. I have a video up that goes into more detail on how I made it. Link below.

What did you use on the bottom of the pallet to make it a sled? Great idea...thanks!

We took the 2x4s off and replaced them with 2x6 boards, 2 on each side to make the runners 4x6” and 6-7 foot long. The plastic runners are 3/16 (I think) teflon sheet that is 6” wide for a little extra flotation. We just used some screws to attach the teflon to the runners and added 3 tie points on each side to strap everything down. It is impressive how well it has held up and how much weight it will carry yet still slides easy. I’ll have to do a video on it when I get everything out for the season to show in better detail how we built it. My dad built one a little different style and used an old set of down hill skis as his runners and that works great as well. Thank you for watching and for your comment!

We do from time to time but were limited on space and had a long ride to the lake on this trip. I have been trying to limit down on how much baggage we have so we can take things like bigger shovels but seems I always end up with to much stuff hahaha. Thank you for watching and your comment.
