- What's a 75-year-old Bentley doing on a sailor's UA-cam channel? You might well ask, but the fact is that when I'm not boating or writing about it, my private passion is for this old car. I've owned it forever, driven it over the Alps to Italy, and since I bought it, it has never been in a professional garage. I do it all myself with my pals in the village, some of whom are a good bit smarter than me. I made this little video on Easter morning because I was so happy to be alive and wanted to share the joy with everyone. So slip her into first, ease out the clutch, and away we go!

The last time you showed us your Bently she was ailing and you weren't sure what the problem was. Glad to see she's on the road again.
You're right Terry. It was multiple ignition issues. I finally capitulated and installed electronic ignition. New coil, leads, dizzy cap etc. It's a new world and looking into the bonnet you can't tell what I've done.
Cheers Mate!
I was walking my dog in Fovant when you drove through, its rare to see a lovely car like yours and even rarer to see a car holding to the 30 mph limit thank you on all counts
What a gem! From the age when cars were cars, not plastic capsules.
W.O. would have been overjoyed to see it!
Congratulations Tom, hope to see more of Reggie.
Think, to have the opportunity to sail in a beautiful boat and then at the same time have such beauty, at home, in the garage. It is a privilege
One can hardly imagine something more British then this
Lovely car ... awesome and unabashed use of corduroy too - 10/10, fellah :)
What a beautiful sounding motor Tom, I would never tire of listening to it.
I love your videos about Reggie! He is a proper English motor!
“Who can ask for more?” you said. Well, we did some lovely sailing during our first weekend sail of the new season. Our Nic 35 took us forward with 7 kts close to the wind in flat water, 5 bft and only the genua flying. That was fun.
But you were so right: it’s all about passion and it doesn’t matter wether it is a Bentley or a Nicholson.
Cheers Tom & thanks for sharing!
Best, Harry
Lovely to see the second love of your life, filmed by the first.
hi sir what a lovely car brilliant nice to see you again looking well sir
One of the last proper Bentleys. Superb.
When I was a apprentice my boss had one of these and I had the job of washing it every week. I always took it for a run after. The best car I have ever driven!
The ride with your nice Bentley car reminds me of my days in Bregenz Austria driving an even steeper road than yours.
Going downwards is even trickier.
I remember when I spent a summer at 16 years old in Baldock.
The lady in the family I stayed with always got excited as the road was straight, she would exclaim it was an old Roman road!
I remember all the narrow hedged roads we traveled.
The lady was not always focused on driving on the road. Sometimes we almost went off the road! It was scary.
Tom, your handling of the car is as excellent as your boat handling!
Great to see the old girl out on a run! Happy Easter
Could listen to that engine all day. Reminds me of my grandfathers jaguars in the 60s.
How extremely pleasant in all respects - scenery, motorcar, driver, weather, whatever. The algorithm found this for me because of the Bentley (I'm not a sailing person), so I hope we get to see more of it.
Great stuff Tom, lovely old proper car absolutely eating up that hill.
Been a fan since before there was an Internet. I assign your videos to my sailing students. I share a love for seagoing and have a few miles under my keel, and I enjoy British cars, although not quite of the same social station as your car, and had an MGB for almost three decades. I was introduced to the marque through the book "Speed Six" as I imagine many young folks were. But when it was time for a refit, I couldn't justify the cost as I was probably not, as in the old days, going to do all the work myself. So I sold it for a Mazda MX-5, which, though putatively blasphemy, was designed after a Lotus and I have to admit does a better job than my beloved MG. Keep up the good work.
With that turning circle it must be pretty much like steering a boat! And were those a pair of leather string-backed driving gloves in the glove compartment? 😉She's an absolute beaut Tom...I bet she just eats the hills with that engine. The perfect picnic car. Nice to see you on a new video, and looking forward to hopefully seeing you in a new sailing video in 2023...you're national treasure Tom....England is going to the dogs, we need people like you to help plot a course and steady the helm...
Its a beautiful old machine mate. Gorgeous.
How lovely, thanks for sharing the driving. Reggie sounds in glorious condition, smooth, quiet and a delight to behold
What a beauty 🎉
I drive soft-top Saab. Technically, it's a cockpit. So yours is a yacht, too.
What a contrast to my latest command, 'Flo"! She's an ICE Adventure recumbent trike with all of 250W (1/3HP) of e-assist [ICE.. Flo... geddit?]. The other day, I took her up Hardknott Pass, making a stately 2 ½ knots on the brutal 30% gradient hairpins near the top. I wonder how Reggie would do? Enough torque, for sure, but I imagine some backing and filling would be needed to get around the hairpins. Now there's a challenge for you, Tom ;-)
Beautiful. Thank you. That engine sounds incredibly smooth, quiet and powerful. The car is a work of art, both externally and internally, and it is very pleasurable to see the whole in action on a sunny day in the English countryside. Driving the Bentley in such conditions must be a sublime experience.
Very grand old car, its classy tom
What a splendid car! In the 70's and 80's, I owned a Frog-eyed Sprite, a TR-4A and an MGB/GT. The Brits have a unique feel for automotive design!
What a beauty!
OMG's that is 1 beautiful car! can you tell us how you got her?
I had some money after selling a boat and I'd always fancied a Mk VI since I hitched a ride in one aged 18. We found Reggie in North Wales and couldn't believe our luck to find a Freestone and Webb semi-razor edge coach built version.
Beautiful car, thanks for sharing it with us.
Old fashioned and vulgar. But enough about me, what a beautiful machine!
Sir Digby Minge MUST have been a Peter Sellers character ...
@@1258-Eckhart How dare you Sir! I am one of the Kirkcudbrightshire Minges. I am disappointed that you appear to disbelieve me. I have told the truth many times!
Come to Cornwall Tom, a lot of our roads are like that one.
Really enjoyed this video, thanks for posting it 😁
Thanks Nick. I Might just do that in the autumn.
Lovely old car.
Freestone & Webb I think ... or was it Freeman, Hardy & Willis? ...... 😁
What a delight Tom, many thanks..........
A real pleasure Duncan. Good to hear from you. Just writing my newsletter!
Brilliant
It reminds me so much on my 1948 Freestone &Webb, Chassis B424CF from 1948, which I owned 20 years ago and attended HM Golden Jubilee Parade in 2002 through Windsor Castle with it 😊 It was design number 3010E. And yours?
That's a clean car. #Salute
Too short but a very sweet ride.
Guaranteed traffic right on the bends, not the straights
Dead right Mate! You couldn't make it up!
Wonderful. I share your passion for both. Thank you Tom!
What a lovely outing ! Thanks you for bringing me along. Much appreciated!
What a beautiful motor car! Elegance at its very best!
WOW, what a GEM..!!
A thing of beauty is a joy forever .
You should probably buy a Thompson SMG just to complete the look.
What a gem of a man!
I’ll always treasure your book that you signed for me .
Oh wow……a real beauty.
Good job, thanks for the ride Tom
What a delightful drive in your Freestone & Webb Mark VI! Thanks so much for sharing.
Bit scary to see those cars coming around the curves on the wrong side of the road!
Wonderful Tom, my dad had Jags in the 60’s and 70’s , occasionally he would borrow the chairman’s car a mark 10 Jag/Daimler . Similar burl walnut interior , smith gauges, drinks cabinet in back seat , magic!
You Bently is stunning
Cheers Warren
Good fun! Thx, Andrew
You sir, are a baller
Nice one Tom,what a great hill &,of course, lovely old Bentley which made short work of the hill
Inthe right weather & the amazing diversity of scenery mile for mile the UK has to offer, there is no better place to be.Shame about the incompetent shower we currently have & have had for a government! I still have my copy of Good Vibrations although now rather dog-eared! I recall then you were living in the New Forest area & I cannot imagine you will have had any reason to move!! Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks. Tom
Beautiful classic and beautuful scenery...thanks for taking us along for the drive!
Yup, start in 2nd gear and then go into top gear for the rest of the day...those Bentley engines had all the torque you really need. Now about that last anchoring video... great stuff! stay happy and healthy, Mr. Cunliffe! Life indeed is good!
What a thing of great beauty. I want one. Great video thanks for sharing 👍.
My grandmother had one of these. Beautiful car.
Fantastic, not a microprocessor in sight (excusing the camera)
That's a lot of bonnet in front of the driver.
Well done Tom, I too enjoy my Bentley MkVI which is a 1948 Standard Steel... beautiful cars they are.
Cheers Mate.
I was expecting Ros to be the other love if your life. Hope I haven't stirred things here.
Ros is number one always, mate! We both love Reggie!
What's the suspension like in that lovely motor Tom ? Is it smooth ?
Smooth as a kiss. Much smoother than my modern super-Volvo, but the Bentley doesn't corner half as well!
Just imagine if the British people had the work ethic , pride , industrious , dedication , that the German people have as part and parcel of their culture , Britain would have a mighty Auto industry and Rolls and Bentley would be British owned and all those famous brands that were destroyed in the Communist uprising of the 1970's would still be produced in vast numbers , only a Brit could destroy a brilliant brand like MG , only a Brit alone , the incompetence takes your breath away .
Superb motorcar and a very special part of England....I have sadly little experience of the former but greatly enjoy the latter, albeit in slightly more prosaic transport!
