  • @ThZuao

Watt was interested in pitching his machine to people who had horses work for hours on end, everyday, on critical infrastructure like a mine's water pump.
What you measured was Maximum horsepower output. Even a strong modern horse wouldn't be able to pull their full strenght for much time. What Watt did was find out the load in which the average horse could pull continuously.
And the French repeated his experiments, but they did it on the Metric system. A CV is roughly 10W less than an HP. Which is pretty much right on the money if you consider the statistical deviations between the horses tested.

Seems like the obvious solution was to have the horse walk in a circle turning a beam, just like the original draught horses... that was the best solution when they were actually using the power. It would allow longer duration testing, which is critical in the definition of HP, as it's not supposed to be a peak power, but the "usable" continuous power the horse can provide as an engine. Would also be pretty easy to rig up a strain gauge for the purpose of measuring the torque.

I always knew James Watt came up with the horsepower rating. I never knew how he did it though. What people have to realize is it is an average over time. Sure the horse pulled 5.7 HP on its pulls but it has to sustain that kind of effort indefinitely. An engine can and will run all day long. It wasn't brewing where horses were being used either but mining. Mines had to have large stables for their operations. It was an enormous expense to maintain. The financial incentive to get rid of all of that was huge. Everything had to be pulled out of mines. Which included a lot of water.

The horsepower was never intended to measure peak output, that's a modern car thing. It was for measuring the expected amount of work you could get out of a horse vs. some motor or other, and after we stopped using horses it stopped mattering all that much how accurate it is. So, a relatively relaxed horse descended from draft horses is exactly the measure we want if we want to know how much Watt was fudging his numbers to make his steam engine look good.

As I scientist that often does peer reviews, I would have a lot of concerns. Using only 1 horse already makes any publication impossible imo. Let alone that the set-up is unnecessarily convoluted allowing for a massive amounts of errors. Furthermore, as stated at the start, horsepower was based on the power of a horse over a long period of time, not peak horse power. These ‘errors’ all make sense for this great video and this really isn’t a critique. But calling it science worthy of publication is a bit of a stretch 😅

I think it’s more about the efficiency tbh, the power loss you get when pulling something in a vertical line without every movement you make being used solely to create power is very inefficient. I think it speaks more to the incredible engineers who have gone from GIGANTIC steam engines that make meager power numbers all the way down to tiny little electric motors that generate horsepower sometimes in the triple digits is far more impressive. The way they can design something to be so small yet so effective at generating power is truly incredible

A lot of people contributed to the steam engine with many inventions complementing each other. Watts biggest contribution was to let the cylinder only partially fill with a bit of steam and then let the steam expand by itself. Thus using less steam and make a much more efficient engine.
However with his patent and some money behind him he fought hard against other inventors of the steam engine for 20 years. During those years the development of various steam engines actually stagnated. So his net contribution is debatable. There is seldom a single inventor behind something, but history can only remember one.

It's so cool to see someone undertake this project! Loved this video. As a professional in the equestrian field, I would love to see a repeat someday with a larger sample size of horses. As mentioned, there are over 350 breeds. Big D (handsome though he is) is not a heavy draft horse, which is the kind originally intended for the measurement of horsepower. He also hasn't been trained to properly pull, nor was he wearing a pulling yoke. A Belgian trained to pull, for example, would probably produce a much higher reading (I'd confidently wager at least 10). They're built to find that leverage, and a team of 2 can pull a semi plus a rig out of a ditch.
Having said that, I know this video took a ton of effort and brains to make. I've been watching this channel for a long time, and I'm stoked to see an actual horse appear. Best collab. Cheers for a job well done guys!

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time.
Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.
(19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad)..
God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. I thought of a treadmill but I also thought how would the horse stop? Too dangerous for the horse. I think you could get the result without having a car on the dyno.

@@kirkbrown2147 Also threatmill would have other problems. You'd still have to harness the horse so it has something to leverage against. Also horse would likely need some training to even walk on a threatmill. It's much easier solution to just make horse pull a rope attached to a drum, and for a horse this is identical to pulling any other load.

This was fantastic. Now you need to do it again with all 500 odd types of horse. Hell, we should try it with other animals, I'd like to know what bear power is!!

Bear power would be cool. On the opposite end, bird power. A few ostriches harnessed together could pull about as much as a horse. But, the biggest animal's the blue whale. I bet one of them could just drag the portable dyno away into the ocean.

Reminded me of the time when I participated in a "plane pull" of a Boeing 727 (minus engines). My coworkers and I competed for the lowest number of people needed to pull the plane from a dead stop. I did not believe it was possible, but if I recall correctly my team won with about ten people being able to pull the plane.

Okay, my new favorite episode, Donut and Adam working together, this may be the most scientific video Donut has done

    • @BranMcRay
      @BranMcRay Рік тому

I wouldn’t say it’s the most scientific ever. Bart and even jer have done a great job in the past explaining known scientific concepts that anyone can can understand. I would agree that this is the most ambitious scientific episode that jer has done. It still needs to be peer reviewed and accepted to receive “most scientific”. That being said, it was the most entertaining science video I’ve probably ever seen. I smiled a lot.

I think if Big D was running it would be a lot more. He was doing a simple trot and making that number. Still, all of this is super impressive. Very happy that Donut is diving into the science of real HRSPRS. I think it shows that these guys are growing and pushing envelopes.

Definitely one of the best Donut videos in a long time!
Other numbers tend to be higher, but many call it a "theoretical maximum" - obviously an actual horse is it not gonna pull crushing it's own bones.
Next step: Publish ALL data! Mistakes are always possible so kindly clear the way for follow ups and corrections. Publishing a paper is nice, but getting cited a lot is next level.
