  • On May 9, 2022 Adrian Ballinger completed the first ski descent of the world's fifth tallest mountain. The descent was over 8000 vertical feet of skiing, and included highly technical rock and ice terrain. This was Adrian's third attempt to climb and ski the extremely technical peak.
    Adrian was supported by Alpenglow Expeditions, and summited the peak with two Sherpa teammates - Dorji Sonam and Pasang Sona. The three were the first to summit Makalu in three years, and fixed the ropes to the summit before Adrian began his descent.
    Stay tuned for a longer edit with many more details of the climb, the descent, and the team, coming later in 2022.

    So sad to hear of Hilaree Nelson's death. You're so brave, Adrian. A hero to all of us. Namaste.

    That's gnarly skiing. No wonder nobody did it before. Looks alot like skiing in the east. 😆

      In reality, in total, 2,570 meters of unevenness that took more than 11 hours to complete.

    I don’t like the exploitation of Everest but Adrian Ballanger seems like a seriously good guy.

      Well it’s a good thing that this isn’t Mount Everest then isn’t it!

    I mean, that’s amazing, but it’s hardly worth skiing. It’s kinda like scuba diving in the deepest part of a city’s sewer, or surfing the worlds biggest wave that isn’t surfable at all cause it’s surface is too irregular to even pop up on…or it’s like taking the worlds smoothest sports car and rolling it down a volcano. It just looked like side slipping over rocks and ruining good skies.

      I absolutely agree- I understand totally the ambition of ski mountaineers to find big and new lines in the high mountains, but this is a dangerous waste of time. Barely skiing and just doing it to be able to say he’s done it

    • @mikeuptegrove
      @mikeuptegrove Рік тому

      @@dan3565 I think you probably put it better and more succinctly. I didn’t know how to tell them without sounding/being mischaracterized as, jealous or petty or something. It’s not a mountain worth skiing. It’s just all risk, no reward in terms of quality skiing. I’m happy man has a desire to conquer all things, but in this case I don’t think I’d take the risk of my objective was to ski. And this is billed as a ski trip essentially. It’s more like an Everest climb that makes things more dangerous by trying to uses skis where they aren’t made to go.
