Hi. So since it's permitted now to be a dual citizenship, is it automatic? Once you received your German passport and since you didn't give up your recent passport, is it automatic?

Hi Jack, yes! It is automatic. You will not lose your current citizenship if you get German citizenship; however, this is assuming your current citizenship also allows dual citizenship.

You said there were no changes for Germans living outside of Germany. However, up to now, one had to get permission from Germany if one wished to obtain citizenship from their host country. As you mentioned, this is a lengthy (and costly process). Will that permission no longer be necessary or do Germans living abroad still need permission from Germany if they want to obtain a second citizenship?

Hello and thanks for your question! Yes, this is correct. The entire Retention certificate will be abolished in about a week from now, so you will no longer need permission from Germany to obtain a second citizenship.
