Tony Hawk's Underground Review - Square Eyed Jak
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Year 1, Day 1: Tony Hawk's Underground was the very first title I ever played of this series. THUG tries to switch the focus away from the professional skaters and into the hands of the player, allowing total customization over the experience and a new, original story to accompany it. But was it a step in the right direction?

Man, I don't even know how many hours of my youth I've sank into this game, and how many things me and my friends used to do when we played it. I recall the best thing to me was how just open-ended and free the game felt, and I pop this son of bitch in almost every year, and it never gets old, even if I've memorized almost every NPC's speech, combo, collectable, or song in the soundtrack... This, in my eyes, is my favorite in the THPS series - it even beats 4, despite 4 having my favorite soundtrack, being my first actual THPS game of my own, the game that got me into punk rock and metal/punk fashion, a game me and my dad could play together (his mind was blown to skate as Eddie), the game that actually got me into skateboarding for reals to an okay level of skill, and the first THPS game I beat without cheating or internet... THUG wins, straight out of the fact I have the best memories of childhood and hanging out attached to it, ha, it's that damn good to me.
I remember making bullshit stories, similar to the ones mentioned here, where me and my friend would make a town on Create a Park, and make all the NPCs speech be just a bunch of swears, giggling in the dark that we knew the word "fuck", and could put it into a video game. We'd make car-themed levels and race-tracks, by making custom missions and setting the timer to be super-long, just to fuck around. We'd make the greatest characters, like, we made Satan, our douchebag friends at the time (this is like, early middle school, by the way, so, everyone was on the same level of douchebagery), we made Jack Thompson, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas (they were still relevant then), other characters from games like Mortal Kombat, WWE - you name it. I distinctly remember the pre-built character, The Suit, was just the funniest thing to us for some reason, because one day, we played the story mode as JUST him, and we were like, "DUDE! LOOK AT THIS RAD SKELETON TALKING TO TONY HAWK!" I even remember we made a story for him, that nobody called him The Suit, but, The Skull, and we'd be like, "It's The SKUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL!" and die of laughter, because it was just funny to us.
I can still remember Mike V. saying "Bullshit" and making me super-nervous, because I think it was the first time I'd heard that in a game, ever, and it blew my mind that you could even say that... The strip club made me uneasy and awkward, because girls were still gross at the time (so was I, to be fair). I recall my friend making a female character with a skirt do a custom trick where he made the stripper moan and a fart noise when she did a flat-land trick, and him thinking it was the hottest thing since sliced bread. I can remember actually saying to a bully in middle school, "What's the matter, bacon bits? Wake up on the wrong side of your mother this morning?" and it actually making him turn red as shit. I remember actually getting the joke from Caddy Shack with the Snickers, and thinking it was the best joke ever. I even remember me and my friend had a memory card JUST for this game, and the good times we had with it...
Trust me... THUG is just that good of a game to me. I seriously praise that game with everything I have for it, because, to me... It's. That. Damn. Good.
That was fucking great! xD
As was the video, by the way. Can't wait for the rest, man! You really showed us your Skittles in this one. :)
Square Eyed Jak dude, what happened to your intro?! It confused the fuck outta me!!!
Shadow the UA-camr if you watch all the opening credits it’s shows Eric skate over a man over, a sewer monster knocks him of his board, and drags Eric into the sewer.
Shadow the UA-camr, what do you mean? It was such a good replica of the actual game's intro!
Already off to a good start with that intro.
Also: “Where the big boys like me play.” LOL
I had to stop watching this review cause I couldn't stop laughing at the edited video of Eric Sparrow tricking over a helicopter while "I believe I can fly" was playing. Easily the best and the most hilarious part of that review XD
The goofy's extreme skate adventure music playing during the leaf blower part was a nice touch
I remember building my neighborhood in the game because I liked the first level at the time and me and my friend would go in between playing this game and skating all night
This production quality and barely any views... it doesn't make sense.
UA-cam's systems can't detect quality so they detect quantity instead. This channel pretty much goes against all guidelines when it comes to content so it doesn't get promoted.
Yeah, that sucks :(
79k is a lot
@stevesharpe3370 you're 6 years late.
Easily the best TH game of all time
No
@@kanzaone yes it is. No other Tony Hawk game has been able to top it
Thps 2 or 3 is probably the BEST of the bunch.. But as someone who was a teenager when the games where coming out and a jackass fan TH underground is my favourite
American wasteland
Disagree, pro skater 2 narrowly beats every game
I can't believe the first Hawktober was almost 5 years ago at this point. Always love rewatching these videos, and can't wait for Hawktober Year 6 next week.
most underrated youtuber
Cheers mate!
@@SquareEyedJak most underrated ever dude
My godamn childhood also 8:06 i want a full cover of thia song now great job dude
THUG, THUG2, and THAW were my first Tony Hawk games for my GameCube. Back in 2010, these games helped me cope with my first car accident, since I was stuck in my house for 4 years of recovery.
Goddammit, of course my computer screen gets broken as soon as you upload this.
Well then, it is time to binge watch this series. It's looking quite good so far Mr. Jak!
Also, you deserve every singing-based award for that I Believe I Can Fly cover. It was so powerful that i couldn't hold back tears.
I suck at Tony Hawk games, so watching you rack up sweet combos was ultra satisfying. Also you captured the intro of Underground perfectly, a true blast from the past. :)
I try ;)
Glad you enjoyed it mate!
At the end of this series, Jak finally performs an Ollie and makes it into the Pro Skater Hall of Fame! God bless you Jak!
Dude, that start short where I was clearly trying and failed. That was just one of probably 100 attempts! xD There were a few where I thought I'd landed it and watching it back, the tail hadn't even touched the ground ahaha
Square Eyed Jak Haha lol! Dude you are freaking awesome! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode!
Props for trying Jak, it's a differcult sport!
Man, I love Tony Hawk, the levels, the controls, the-
*intro happens*
Death via brutally pulling someone into the sewer?
No wonder why I love this game
First thing I EVER saw in a Tony Hawk game, so I just had to remake it! :D
7:00 don't why, but I laughed way too hard at this 😂
The trailer and intros are so professional and add so much in my opinion. Also, i loved this video to, you always talk about skateboarding and tony hawk and can finally do a series on it. Good job mate. Looking forward to the next instalment for Hawktober. ^_^
I really like the extra effort put in the skits and extras in your newer videos. They make your even videos better than they already are. I love it!
Cheers dude, I try to go that extra mile as often as possible. Makes stuff feel more special I think. :)
8:13 The clap killed me lmao
Yo mate, here in 2019 and I wanted to say your content is great. Why you haven’t blown up is beyond me. Your production quality is excellent and your perspective is fun for nostalgia.
Here’s to wishing you the best and ultimate success.
That intro is awesome
First of all, that is the best UA-cam intro I’ve ever seen. Also I think they should remaster all of the old tony hawk games and let you create your own goals and share them with people online.
Going back and rewatching all of the Hawktober specials and you did NOT have to go that hard with the complete intro remake
This was my first Tony Hawk game, yes I did have to go that hard!
Square Eyed Jak same here! And it was definitely appreciated, seeing you redo the intro was a huge nostalgia boost
I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been binging your Tony hawk videos... how do these not have more views?? The amount of work and effort you put into these is almost documentary like. I grew up playing all of the tony hawk games and I get a lot of enjoyment watching someone else review these games which aren’t all that relevant anymore. It’s very nostalgic to me and I get a good few laughs from your videos. Definitely keep it up man :)
I really enjoy watching your videos, you and Game Dave are one of my favorites retro game youtubers!
Plus you review the games that I liked as a kid.
I loved this game so much. I put Skyrim-level hours into this game.
One of the best videos from you i've ever seen. Maybe even the best. Keep up!
Cheers mate! :D
I love this guy's video editing script writing. It's flows so nice and is always funny.
GManLives is good but this is gold.
I the beginning, recreating the intro of the game is (kiss lips together like an Italian after making an amazing dinner course) masterpiece.
The "Tony Hawk Leafblower simulation" was the icing on top of the whole thing.
And there's still a 1/3 left to go.
Give this man an Emmy or whatever solo film making award there is to recognize greatness.
Keep it up
such a good review glad i finally came back to watching the videos again. The quality has improved so so much with the intro and the actual review
Takes me back to elementary school days. I have fond memories of this game. It'll forever be my favorite skating game.
Man, you've been killing it for years. I'm only now getting clued in to Hawktober. Keep on!
I remember very vaguely playing Underground at a friend's house. I think it was this time around the series that I just got bored with it, and my fondest memories are of 1 and 4. I even remember my family getting me Downhill Jam for the Wii, and I wasn't very fond of it in the slightest. Still, the games give me good memories, and now looking at this review, I kind of wish I gave Underground more of a chance.
Also good on ya for going to an actual Skate Park, I wonder what everyone was thinking when they saw ya recording yourself.
I'm already seeing a lot of review requests in the comments. Go ahead and watch the trailer for this week's channel special so that you know what else is coming in the next few days.: ua-cam.com/video/C7NnTrRLILM/v-deo.html
If you don't see it in the trailer, it's on the list for NEXT YEAR'S special. Cheers!
Square Eyed Jak I nlod
LIGHTS OUT....oh thats over
Or is it? #spoileralert ;)
Square Eyed Jak Does that mean we'll get to see a review of the greatest tony hawk game ever , tony hawk ride.
Square Eyed Jak this game was my entire 7th grade year haha loved it so much....the sequels just didn't cut it for as much though.....except American wasteland I liked being able to bike and switch it up a little.
Ive been subscribed for a long time already gotta say I'm glad youre back on you're A game. You disappeared but good job on this come back and consistency. You deserve a million subs keep it up and I guarantee you got this!
I never disappeared, in fact, I've been uploading more content than most other review channels for 3 years solid now.
Man just watched this years hawktober now going back through em all you smashed it 💪🏼 big nostalgia trip
Rewatching!!! Can’t wait for this years Hawktober!!!
your intros are always amazing man! keep up the good work!
One video and I'm already look forward to the making of that's going to follow. With a project this big you know it's gonna happen.
I want to see the looks that the actual skaters gave you while you were just sitting there talking about Tony Hawk.
Also the first Tony Hawk game i owned. i loved it and spent so much time playing every mode and playing multiplayer with my sister in our created parks. I remember being super disappointed in 2 though when i finally played it but i dont remember why exactly.
damn, this intro is beautiful, gj jak :D
Thanks! :D
The Alternative ending of this game was more classic imo 👌
was looking everywhere for this comment! I remember the very last mission being hell for me to get past as a kid and it took me so long to beat it. So when I did my 2nd playthrough and discovered that if u complete the game once and start a new character directly after that, when Eric challanges you right at the end, instead of accepting you just bitch slap the fucker and knock him out and take the tape back i absolutely lost it
Keep it coming with this fantastic series sir!
Man your editing has jumped in improvements, radical man!
Cheers mate! ;)
That intro was so good.
Wooo, Just beat thug 2 on sick mode with all goals and this got uploaded, Sick.
That is pretty sick, sick as FUCK! :D
Underground 2 and American wasteland were my favorites when I was younger. I just found the first underground at a store and im about to play through for the first time, very excited.
did you know that if you complete the game twice, you'll get a different ending and you don't have to do Eric's mission at the end to get your tape
That Darkslide Glitch though.... I loved it. Fun Fact: Trick Attack when played online stops counting at 2.2 billion.
Absolutely sick intro, well done!
am I the only one who had a skateboard but never used it??
The original Underground is the game that I always come back to, this game will always hold a special place in my heart. The intro is my favorite of all of the games and every intro is fire, the story was great the gameplay holds up even today for the most part, the soundtrack is just at good if not better than the rest and it’s just all around fun, just going through the goal list and watching the story play out. Especially after learning that if you play through on multiple difficulties you get to punch Eric and take your tape…. Chefs kiss and that should be the canon ending. I’m playing through the whole series as we speak and I loved every minute of playing T.H.U.G. 3 times all the way through. I must say that wall plant combo on sick difficulty really tested my patience.
Amazing video man I really appreciate the time you spend making your content
Appreciate ya watching! :D
This is my favourite tony hawk. So much customizable features. Even your own music played in the game. The walking feature was a great idea.
yeah and some longtime fans say that getting off your board killed the franchise but for real the levels in this game would not work without it because they where designed with that mechanic in mind
damn your production quality just keeps getting better! :)
That intro is spot on great video man
Best customization in the series! Especially the board creation! Love it!
5 reviews of one of my favorite game series by one of my favorite reviewers? in the week i turn 22? yes please :)
You're welcome! ;)
Happy early birthday :]
Omg I forgot all about this series you were doing I’m sorry Jack I’ve missed this man keep up the awesome content
Just by the intro alone we already know the video is gonna be good :D
One of the most standout moments of my entire childhood, despite not even owning THUG1 and instead basically 100%-ing THAW will always be that mctwist over the chopper.
It's just such a cool moment followed immediately by such a stomach-churning betrayal.
Excellent Review Jak, That Intro Was Awesome as well as the skate tricks, coming back tomorrow to see what you think of THUG2, a favorite but also "interesting" game for me. Anyway Jak Take Care And Have A Great Fucking Day!!
They need to remaster this & THUG2.
Also, that intro scared the shit out of my little brother when he first saw it.
Love the gumption Jak! Looking forward to more Tony Hawk!
BEST part of this game hands down is when you play through the game a second time and beat it instead of having to face off against Eric one last time your character just punches him in the face and knocks him the fuck out during the cutscene.
I like this guys creativity.
It seems Tony Hawk music cover album is coming along nicely.
Strap in and strap up ladies its officially Hawktober and its gonna be a fucking ride of lifetime! Loved the video man and that intro pure gold bro, cant wait for more! ;D
8:19 I Cried at this moment omg
i played this game when i was like 5. I had no idea the amount of customization. Oh my god. I'm getting my hands on this game and creating the coolest fucking npc dialogue with the create a mission stuff. I need to play this again.
Awesome video. Im a new viewer amd I love that you review a lot of games from my childhood/teenhood. Id love to ser you review the TimeSplitters series at some point.
going through this playlist, that intro was badass
Great shit Jak! I'm looking forward to the reviews of the rest, this franchise is a ton of fun (mostly).
Aayye like for birthday release piece man
Love the videos
I own this game on PS2, but could never really get into it cuz I got stuck on the first area thanks to a glitch where one of the missions froze. This just makes me wanna play it again to see if I could get it past that freezing point.
And on another note, 6:58 killed me.
Fantastic review as always!
the intro was so good i subscribed
Still playing 2021 too
Well done on the intro man
Cheers, very happy with it! :)
Love the reviews as always! Keep it up
Great review dude! :D I can't wait to see the other ones.
Meh I didn't mind the vehicle missions, this is the perfect Tony Hawk game imo
Tony Hawk's Underground, first PS2 game I ever played and still play until today, such a unique series the underground games had become popular such as the underground pro mod that made this game even more amazing, this game bust some hours of day like wind and as you said "this is how a sequel is made" calling out the huge combos that we are getting used to make other players think we use bots just because we use the level In a way that not believable, only making the pro skater even better story mode that begins fixing your lazy ass friend skate and ending with beating Eric (or knocking him out if you finished the game the second time) just this game deserved a 9/10 amazing, proably reviewing this game in some days
Been looking forward to these
7:00 Holy fuck that killed me x'D
Loved it jak!
Did you post pone your eye toy video idea until after Tony Hawktober?
That edit at the beginning actually looked pretty real 😂
Really nice video , dat intro is super nice
That fucking intro was amazing!!!
This is truly the best Tony Hawk game, THUG 2 went over the top with an annoying amount of non-skating crap. Just enough game mechanics were added at this point to make it great for scoring lots of combos (manual, reverts, caveman) but still feel like a skateboarding game.
Will you be doing American Wasteland soon? That was my childhood skateboard game.
ShadowEspioFan1
American Wasteland was the best one for sure, it will be uploaded Wednesday.
I just beat this for the first time after learning its 360 backwards compatible and damn is it a banger. I started off playing thaw and this game was significantly better😂 I fr missed out
The way he stopped after that 3 shove!! 😂😂😂😂😂
i laughed so hard at tony hawk pro leaf blowers
That intro omg LMFAO... amazing job
Sick intro bro!!
Skating skills on point 👌 Haha yeah, no, but your editing skills certainly are - great job, my man.
Ahaha cheers ;D
Remember guys, Eric Sparrow was played by Number 1, Nigel Uno, from Kids Next Door
Loved this game, played it again recently.
Wait, a review every... day?! HOLY FUCK AND I THOUGHT HE WAS AT LEAST A LITTLE SANE!
Keep up the good work, Jak!!
