the length of the fabric will ALWAYS be a third due to the nature of how a fork pleat works !! the difference in fork size will only result in a difference of the pleat's width. so no matter how big your fork is, you will always end up with a fabric that is a third of the original lengths. your pleats will just be smaller or bigger depending on the fork :)
Not gonna lie, that was the simplest easiest explanation of how to do a mitred corner I've ever seen and I've been sewing for almost 20 years 🤣 So nice to hear Aussie accents when watching sewing videos ❤ although I can't work out if you're from Brisbane or Melbourne. I'm probably completely off 😅 Gorgeous hanbok 😍🥰
“How much fabric you need depends on two things”… Me, expecting waist and height: yup this makes sense… “First is size of your fork” Me, falling off my chair in excited giggling: did I switch from a sewing tutorial to an explanation of food portion sizing? Well I am totally here for that!
Wow, good job, the skirt looks really professionally done! I did my University thesis on female hanboks so naturally I've always wanted to make one, but never got to do it for real. Maybe because I am not good at sewing. Instead I learned to embroider and decorate clothes, which is also nice. But seeing your tutorial made me think about making the skirt once again, so thank you!
I'm not Korean, or asian at all, but i love both traditional asian clothing and sewing! I'd love to make something inspired by it, but I'm scared I'll offend anyone by cultural appropriation. What are your thoughts on this and would I be able to make this hanbok?
I don’t think it’s cultural appropriation at all because you’re showing appreciation for the clothing. You’re showing respect to the original garment and most people feel very proud when we see others wear a piece of our culture as appreciation and respect. In the tutorial it’s a modernize version of the original hanbok and she explains the terms to educate others. So what I’m saying is if you want to make it you should! 🥰
Yep Michelle explained it perfectly! I'm trying to share my culture, so as long as you know the context and what it is i.e. 'heori chima' - then I think you're all good :)
I agree with Michelle et al, I’m Korean and I would not be offended if you wore a traditional hanbok or a modern one. I would probably come up to you and chat you up!
This is very similar to a kilt. The difference being the waistband is narrower and kilts, by tradition, are made of a plaid wool ( dependent upon clan)
Coming back to this video to say that I finally conquered my fears and made this beautiful skirt! It’s my first Big Sewing Project and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. You make everything very accessible and clear. Thank you so much for the instructions and also the wonderful descriptions of traditional and modern hanbok:)
I live in Korea, but I'm having a hard time getting men's hanbok jeogori. Most of them sell modernized hanbok without knots(Go-ruem). I'm training Taekkyeon, a traditional Korean martial arts, and I enjoy exercising in hanbok. But it was impossible to find a man's hanbok made of solid fabric.I want to learn something through your channel and make denim hanbok jeogori.
Wow. I'm only halfway through, but I'm already impressed. I've never made a pleated skirt before, but I would probably just have sat down and carefully marked and folded and pinned and pressed (and possibly basted) everything before ever getting to the sewing part 😆. It would have never occurred to me, to just 'pleat and go' like that. How clever. Your technique for mitered corners I'll also surely try and compare to mine,!
Here's a tip - I hope you don't mind me pointing this out! The size of the fork doesn't actually matter. what matters is the percentile depth of your pleats. if your pleats lay back to back, you will have 3 layers of fabric in your pleated area at any given point. That shrinks your fabric down to a third of its length. It doesn't matter if there are many many tiny pleats back to back (although a small percentage will differ due to the number of "bends" in the fabric. The thicker the fabric, the more this matters.), or if there are a few very large pleats. So if you go with 4.5 times your waist measurement it should always be just about right. :) Lovely video btw, I'm happy to have found you!
@@halfsoybean Nooo you're not dumb. Nobody can do or know everything. You did a very fine job with your tutorial and it's always better to err on the side of caution. I'm sorry I didn't check for similar comments thoroughly enough.
Fantastic tutorial. I feel really inspired to try and make a Hanbok wrap skirt. I wear leg braces and am always on the look out for ankle length skirts. I often find that for a modern asthetic I require inspiration from other cultures. Thank you for sharing. X
Thank you for this video, I have a soft spot for traditional clothing around the world and hanbok are so beautiful, having something more modernized means I can appreciate it's beauty too~ That red is so beautiful on you~
That is hands down the coolest way I've EVER seen to make pleats!!! I cannot *WAIT* to try this! I've been looking for a "Dressed down" version of a Hanbok to wear to festivals, and, being plus sized, it's been so hard! Thank you x (infinity!)
I desperately need to make one (or several) of these skirts! I appreciate your time and effort to educate and ensure that I come prepared to speak to the history of this item of dress 😍 Thank you for the tutorial!!!
I've had this video saved for a while and I finally finished the skirt! Even though I messed up some of the measurements (I was working with a very odd striped fabric and paranoid about making it too small), it still came out great. This was such a great tutorial, very clear and well organized, so it was easy to jump back into the project whenever I had some free time. I kind of want to make another one now that I understand the garment better, and I'll definitely use this as my reference point for wrap waistbands and mitered corners. Fantastic video, and thank you so much for sharing this piece of your culture! ♥
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I was a little scared to mess up, so I used a very colorful bed linnen for my first try. Well, I am very proud to say, that I am going to wear a beautiful colorful Hanbok Skirt to german Karneval tomorrow. And now I‘m prepared for some really nice fabric.
I started watching the Mystic Popup Bar for lockdown entertainment but stayed for the fab outfits the main character was wearing! Thanks so much for explaining the construction 💕
Hello, fellow Aussie! Thank you so much for making this video! The skirt is truly beautiful, and those explainations of the various techniques were just what I needed. But mostly, thank you for helping educate those of us who don't get to be exposed to korean culture and clothing in our everyday lives!
A beautiful piece and paired with the cute simple top the outfit is great! Really love seeing how traditional clothing are modernized to still fit into the daily life of people (I come from a place where we don't really have traditional clothing anymore).
I needed this tutorial desperately when I was trying to make a wrap skirt a few months ago. I couldn't get the pleats to look right but now I know that I likely didn't have enough fabric to work with. I eventually managed to brute force the pleats after much trial and error lol
Amazing tutorial 💜 love that modernised traditional clothing is gaining popularity. You've inspired me to come up with some modernised traditional Maltese clothing 😊
I absolutely love this pleated skirt and TBH I love Korean fashion! 😍😍😍 Before COVID I used to visit & shop in Seoul twice yearly… Hence I hope you can show us more tutorials on how to make them moving forward❤️
Love this. My sewing club students want to make Hanbok. I am still trying to see in my mind how the skirt wraps around. I will make a practice skirt this weekend.
Such a beautiful garment! I really love the colour of the skirt and the way you made that hole in the waistband was so beautiful! I've never seen it done like that, definitely might have to try that one day.
Looks beautiful! I've always been more into Japanese culture but the Hanbok is still one of my favorite traditional dresses in the world! I'd love to make this casual version but I'm kind of afraid I'll wear it every single day haha
I’m currently using a plain cotton bedsheet I thrifted! It’s working great so far. I’d recommend if you’re a beginner to not use slippery fabrics like silk or satin. Something not see through with good texture grip will be easiest to try this with! Good luck!

I've wanted to make a modernized hanbok outfit for the longest time, finally found your video!! Thank you thank you!!!! ❤️ Do you have a tutorial on how to make the jeogori? 😊
The forksize doesn't matter, pleats give you 3 layers of fabric all around, giving you a final length of 1/3 your original fabric length, a smaller fork just gives you more pleats than a larger one. The math becomes more complicated if you space out or stack your pleats though.
Thanks so much for this easy to follow tutorial! I had a quick question though- how far down do you press the pleats? Like halfway? A third of the way? or all the way down?

fabric length formula: waist measurement x 1.5 (for wrap skirt) x 3 (for pleat shrinkage)
