    equating quantitative enlightenment thinking in general with specific totalitarian actions of the French revolutionaries is an iffy correlation. IMO the French revolutionaries were mirroring their oppressors. The oppressed frequently act out the role of their oppressors - its a common pattern that perpetuates abuse and violence. Rationalizing violence is a perversion of enlightenment rhetoric.
