Don't call it the Old Testament!! - Seth Postell

  • It might seem like semantics here, and of course we still use the term "Old Testament", but have you thought about the effect this name has made on our reading of Scripture? When we refer to it as the "Old" Testament it gives the connotation that these books aren't relevant anymore. Dr. Postell dives deeply into why the covenants and promises in the books of the Tanakh are still active in our present and future.

Dr. Seth! Thank you for this! About 18 years ago I started investigating the Hebrew roots of my faith. Torah, The Prophets, and the Writings have definitely inspired me to the way of how to live a redeemed life. Like you said All scripture is God breathed 2 Timothy 3:16. Jesus said in Matthew 5:17-20, that he did not come to abolish the Torah or the Prophet’s but to complete them and that they would always be relevant and should be obeyed as long as we retain the breath of life. I am a Native American Gentile grafted in and am truly grateful for God’s grace towards me. Thank you again, Brother Seth. Have a great evening. God bless.

I've always seen the old covenant as "Messiah concealed" and the new covenant as "Messiah revealed". Everything in the old is pointing to the promised Christ and how we will know Him when He comes and the purpose for the new is to establish and defend His coming and describe the time when He shall return.

I have been going to church my whole life and am surprised to hear that some Christians do not value "the scriptures". How can you have the one without the other? I love the way they integrate to give us a fuller picture of the LORD & His creation - past, present and future!l Love the podcasts. Love hearing about the awakening in Israel and the role of One for Israel in it. Thanks for the English version.

doesn't matter what it's called, but in some churches, the pastor/teachers do not understand or believe in the types and figures of the OT or how it relate to the NT, and/or do not value prophesy. They think all people have to know is the NT/Gospel account for salvation or how to live the Christian Life. But read Hebrews. How can their congregations understand NT terms "Lamb of God" or "the shedding of blood" or why the disciples thought Jesus came to be King with no knowledge of the OT? ALL of it is the Word of God and a such is a blessing to learn!

Shalom, Shalom from Paraguay! Amen! All Scriptures is God-breathed, inspired and authored by Him! Unfortunately, many around me do not understand that. However, the sisters in the LORD, whom I meet regularly, are having more love for God and the Scriptures! They see that it is the truth and they are not obsolete. Lives are being transformed! Aside from that, they are having a growing love for Y'srael! We are adding to the number. Praise the LORD! Please remember us in your prayers! Todah Raba! God bless you continually!

Anyone who believes the Old Testament is obsolete isn't truly studying the Old Testament and don't realize that in order to understand the New Testament you have to understand the Old. Therefore it is not obsolete and they need to be taught this.

I have always loved all of scripture. I don't know how anyone can understand the New Testament without really studying the Bible of Jesus or Scriptures. You're right, the message from beginning to end is all about Jesus. Another thing that I guess I looked at differently is that once I understood how it was set up, I knew that the first five books were the "old testament". I just looked at the remainder as books revealing God's patience and mercy to a people who really, really, really need a Savior. Along with that the words of the prophets pertaining to the Messiah led to Jesus coming in the flesh....the word became flesh and dwelt among us! This channel really gives whole new insights to a lot of things that I never saw before in Scripture.

Christians call the Tanakh the Old Testament because those are the scriptures written under the first covenant, the Mosaic covenant. ‘Old’ doesn’t mean irrelevant or outdated. The New Testament is ‘new’ because it is the Scripture written under the New Covenant, the covenant of grace that Jeremiah spoke of. Jesus said to his Apostles during his last supper “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood”. We can think of the Old Testament as the promise and the New Testament as the fulfillment.

This prophecy of Jesus, from Isaiah 42 from the Old Testament was quoted in Matthew 12:17-21 about Jesus the son and chosen one of JEHOVAH the Most High our Father.
Isaias 42:42 Look! My servant [Jesus The Son of The Most High], whom I.. support!
My CHOSEN ONE, whom I.. have approved!
    I have put MY SPIRIT in HIM;
He will bring justice to the nations.
2 He will not cry out or raise his voice,
And he will not make his voice heard in the street
5 This is what the TRUE GOD, JEHOVAH says,
The Creator of the heavens and the Grand One who stretched them out (...)
    6 “I, JEHOVAH, have called YOU in righteousness;
I HAVE TAKEN hold of YOUR HAND.
I WILL SAFEGUARD YOU and GIVE YOU as a covenant for the people
And as a light of the nations
Matthew 12: 17 in order to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, who said:
18 “Look! My servant [Jesus The Son].. whom I [JEHOVAH YHWH The Father] chose, my beloved, whom I have approved! I will put MY SPIRIT UPON HIM, and what justice is he will make clear to the nations.

The Road to Emmaus, Jesus based the best 'Bible study' on existing Scriptures.
Not only is Old /New Covenant an issue for some but many preachers incorrectly present God as the OT wrathful, destroying God. As if the judging God is not in the NT huh? And the NT God is of grace. Grace as we know Gen 3:15 . So on soforth.
Great teaching guys, thankyou for helping me use better language.

I started reading the Old Testament front to back, every word, which ashamedly i never did before, and one of my takeaways is how much it emphasizes the Holiness of God. By the time i got to "be holy for I am holy" (paraphrased) being hammered home, I had a transformation in my mindset, and the power of Jesus' sacrifice was magnified immensely. I regret waiting so long to focus on the "old", because I'm seeing the "new" through new eyes now.

Also man put a page in the Bible between the “Old” and the “New” testament kind of like trying to rebuild the wall between Jew and non Jew again. If Adonai tore the veil and the wall was torn down, why do we insist on rebuilding divisions. One God, one Holy Scripture, one Holy people. Amazing thing you find everything spoken in books Matt - Revelation is in the first 39 books. So stands to reason read it all. You can’t understand the end until you understand the beginning

I truly started looking into the entire Bible back in 2015 and have learned so much for doing so.
You are speaking truth about how many Christians see the books written before Christ's birth. I was guilty of that way of thinking and taught my daughter what I was taught. It has done a lot of damage to her walk. Now that I've told her what we were taught is a lie (on so many issues), she has a hard time believing and studying. Please pray for us.

I was raised to think of myself as a "Christian" though not church attending nor bible reading as a family. I was left on my own to evaluate religion in general. I was however given a bible. I was not impressed trying to read it following especially all the names, trying to keep them in mind, trying to understand why all those names were given. Today, finally, feeling very retired, I've found the time to truly take the time I need to follow the bible, however, picking a good bible was important. I forget how I came across The Complete Jewish Bible, but for the first time I'm finding myself fully engaged. "Old Testament" is a misnomer. Though I did already have great respect for Judaism in general, today I am incredibly impressed with the whole story. I'm so impressed how they have struggled to keep true to Adonia/God. And, I feel truly Messianic, like Jewish-Christian. Whether or not your background is from a blood line or a conversion into Judism, anyone who believes in Yeshua/Jesus is Messianic and can and/or should appreciate the whole story. Well, this is the "Old" and the "New" Testament but as one story. So simple, yet very significant to realize it is just one book, one story.

The importance of the message, is of significant consequential importance. i found it odd that there was not more effort put into giving a new title or defining term. One that would fit better. If we are to remove a portion of language. It is easier to do, if we have something to replace it with. It is also important that the division is where the gentiles are brought in. This is not a small insignificant detail. It was change the nature of things significantly.

I can see that the term "old" testament is taken as an offensive word for the Jews. It's more like personal rather than biblical truth. Jesus, our Lord, Himself, mentioned on these verses in Luke 22:20 about the new covenant in His blood and in Mark 2:22 about the new wineskin and old wineskin. So, using the word "old" testament is an existing biblical terminology and there is no conflict about this. I think the good Dr. Seth is confused about the use of the term and how the term is treated. If we assume right away that the word "old" means outdated or obsolete, we are wrong since there is no bible verse that supports it. I'm a Christian from the Philippines and I was told to study both the old and new testament with the same degree. We have to be accurate with our information and meaning if we are to share His word. This is the reason why I am an avid listener to ONE FOR ISRAEL because I learned a lot about the old testament. I thank God so much for this channel. It is really an awesome source of learning the Word of God. If there is only an online school, I would have jumped in. I also share the same sentiment about some pastors, others are even leaders of the church, who are not really mindful of their words. Any pastors who would say that we are a new testament church, he is so wrong and I hope he would repent because there is no such biblical basis to call any churches as a new testament. I hope these kind of pastors be reminded that teachers will receive heavier punishment if we are not accurate with our knowledge or at least be humble enough to accept corrections. There is really a greater demand for accuracy when preaching His word. By the way, the new testament is something that we, non Jew Christians, can relate to since it talks about the expectations and instructions for a new convert like me. However, to study the new testament will never be accurate without studying the old. Again, the "old" testament is a biblical term, no conflict whatsoever associated with this word. So, it's okay to use it. It is just how we put meanings on this word that goes beyond biblical truth. In Christ, we are all the same -- Christians. In Jesus Christ's name, amen!

We're refering to the Septuagint as the Old Testament/Covenant, in order to destinguish it from the New Covenant, since one is Prophetic and applies to the past, while the other is Messianic and applies to the present/future, so it's a crucial distinction from the Orthodox perspective.

I agree, but it’s worth noting that there are a couple of things that do naturally create a distinction between the “old testament” and the “new testament.” First, the one was written BC, and the other was written AD-so, they are distinguished by the incarnation (not insignificant). Second, one was written in Hebrew (+ a little Aramaic), and the other in Greek.
So, it’s not that there are no distinctions, but I wholeheartedly agree that these distinctions are not as big as the terminology “OT” and “NT” may suggest to us.
Maybe we should simply refer to them as “the Hebrew scriptures” and “the Greek scriptures.” That avoids any implication of one superseding or outdating the other, and acknowledges them equally as scripture, but still helps us refer to them individually when appropriate. And, it has the added benefit of reminding us how each of them came to us, in a particular language with a particular historical context.

I usually stay as far away from calling them "Old/New Testament" as possible and use the term "First/Second Testament" instead.

  • @SowingGodsWord
    @SowingGodsWord Рік тому

The first testament allows me to understand my Jewish roots and heritage as a Christian. It allows me to understand the whole counsel of the Love of God, and the second testament enables me to see my covenants in the present and eternity future. The entire bible is the most remarkable and beautiful love story ever told and continues to speak to the innermost part of our hearts. It was hard for me to grasp the fear of the Lord until I intently began to study the entire body of scripture in the first testament. I agree. There is nothing old about our family history, and using the word "Old Testament" infers that it is no longer relevant, which could not be further from the truth.

For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.…"

It is my opinion that the New Testament cannot be fully understood without the Old Testament. Nearly one third of the New Testament either directly quotes the Tanakh, or closely paraphrases it, predominantly by Yeshua. I deeply appreciate these podcasts.

I didn't realize that New Testament church meant they didn't study from the "Old".
It's hard to think of dividing the scriptures.
I love the stories of Genesis, Exodus- the history, the people the way of God with them. The prophets, King David- the life lessons we learn through them. And through all- proclaiming a deliverer, a savior, one who would be the hope of the world.
I love the way it all flows together- the walk of Jesus from birth to resurrection and ascension all foretold.
I love the devotion of those who truely worshipped God.
I don't know that I would understand the gosples as well without reference to the history of the "Old", Testament.
    Thank you for this understanding.

  • @chuckporritt6958

Despite this edifying discussion, I feel that the gentlemen skirted around the most important point. The beginning of the New Testament starts with John the Baptist; essentially the last and greatest of the old Mosaic covenant priests. And he pointed to the Lord Jesus as the true Lamb of God.
The fundamental difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament is the end of the Mosaic animal sacrifices and priesthood, replaced by Christ as now the one and only new Priest, Who has entered into the true Tabernacle in heaven.
And so I think maybe the 2 parts of the Bible should be defined as animal blood vs. the blood of Christ (or foreshadowing vs. fulfillment). Animal blood is the unifying theme of the Old Testament going back to the clothing from animal skins that God made for Adam and Eve.
This is why Paul was hated by his Jewish brethren; because he foretold the end of the Temple and the Mosaic sacrifices. And it is the reason why Stephen was stoned to death. The Mosaic covenant and its powerless sacrifices had been replaced by the true Lamb of God.

You are right in what you are saying, but it is just semantics to me. A serious disciple will never come to the conclusion that the Old Testament is obsolete. If you understand that the names of the books and the numbered chapter and verse divisions are not Bible, but only reference helps, you won't make that mistake. Be led by the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, Bible study is just an intellectual exercise.
Lu 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Lu 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

I would only add that One for Israel is also interested in strengthening the Body of Messiah in our witness to Jewish people. With that in mind (though they didn't mention it here) using terms like "Old Testament" may create otherwise avoidable stumbling blocks to sharing with Jewish people about Jesus the Messiah from the Hebrew Scriptures.

One bible teacher I listen to, taught that the New Covenant was made with Israel, and we gentile believers are grafted into the Oliver Tree, and so by that it made sense to me biblically, that the NT (covenant) is made with Israel. "I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah". Jeremiah 31:31. I understood that God was speaking of the New Testament, is this incorrect? ❤OFI

Yes. That is how I read it. Jeremiah 31. Reading OT makes the NT more rich. In any case, NT is constantly referring to OT. Jesus quotes psalms and deutronomy often.
