His trick at the hospital was he would ask an intern for a diagnosis and treatment and then ask another one if they concurred. If they did, he ordered the treatment.
The interns loved him as, unlike other bossy and mean supervisors, he listened to them and empowered them.

My father's father used to tell us grandkids all kinds of stories about his time in the airforce. Speaking for myself, I would go "yeah right ". When he died in 2005, we went to the funeral. I never saw so many gold braids. Bands around cuffs and stars. To say I ate posthumous crow is an understatement.

My buddy who was in the military gave me a backpack with camouflage on it because it was just a damn good backpack for traveling and i travel a lot. Anyways after being told “thank you for your service” 2x and me explaining that oh no my friend gave me this and im not in the military i stopped using it because being confused as a military member when im just some civilian was embarrassing enough. I cant imagine trying to purposely pretend to be a military member when you never were.

The difference in culture is strange to me. In my country no one would ever praise a soldier. They are viewed as worse than the police. They are ridiculed for being dumb and useless. A few years ago a soldier managed to drive out of his base with a car filled with weapons and no one batted an eye. After it became clear he wanted to assasinate the head of state the entire army launched a search party. They knew he was in a certain forest and combed it for a month before giving up. The day the forest reopend for the public, a hunter found him (he found his decomposed body saying it was hard to miss since you could smell it from the main road). Mind you, that is the second time this happened. We have a running joke that you only need two braincells to become a cop, but failing that, you can always join the army. So seeing your culture of army worship is definately weird to witness

As a combat veteran myself I HATE stolen valor. I’ve even caught a few including one of my very own old coworker. He constantly pulled the vet card always calling out blaming it on his “ptsd episodes”, getting Veterans Day and Memorial Day off while I, the actual veteran, had to work, he’d get gift cards from the company and everything. That was until I got fed up with his lying and checked him. I asked where he was stationed and he said ft hood. Well whatta ya know?! Me too! What unit were you in? This is when I started to see him panic on the inside…he named some crazy unit I have never ever heard of let alone in ft hood, followed by the golden excuse that screams stolen valor, “well you wouldn’t have heard of it because it was a top level super secret unit. You wouldn’t have known we were there in the first place. I can’t even tell you what my job was because I signed papers telling me I couldn’t” I looked at him with a devilish grin that was a mixture of anger and satisfaction while telling him “oh really? I’m curious though, why did you call it a job? Did you forget your MOS number?” His answer was pure gold. He said “because that’s what we had, a job. My unit didn’t do numbers or call anything MOS. I couldn’t even tell ya what MOS means because we followed rules outside of the military rules” “you mean UCMJ?” “No not UCMJ, UCMJ is only for marines. I was Army”. 😂boy oh boy I found myself yelling one of the iconic quotes from Full Metal Jacket yelling “Boy you better unfuck yourself before I unscrew your head and 💩 down your neck!” I told him that he had two choices; either come with me and come clean to all the bosses that he lied this entire time or I call the police right then and there and make it worse. Let’s just say he’s not there anymore 😂 🤷🏻‍♂️

Friend of mine's dad is an officer and have a few stories of how they do and teach things in my country, when it comes to medals they tell recuits "You're ONLY ALLOWED to wear medal that have been given to YOU personally and officially, and also HOW and WHEN you're allowed to wear them, no wearing grandpas old medals and it goes for everyone, military and civilian alike."
It's not "freedom of speech" it's dishonoring any and all soldiers and p*ssing on their deeds and sacrifice. Also being convicted of stolen valor bars you from EVER having a chance to get into the military in ANY position.

Minor correction. If the medal or ribbon is listed on the veterans DD 214, they are allowed to wear it. Requirements and new medals come along all the time and are often retroactive. One example being the KDSM. Veterans can request Page Ave to check their service record and update their awards on a DD 215. After I got out I did that and found out I had 3 or 4 that were awarded after I was discharged.

Biggest case of stolen valour (or walting as it’s known) in the uk was a man named James shortt
Back in the 80’s shortt was invited to spend time with the SAS as he was writing a book on them, and managed to talk his way onto joining the 21 SAS the reservists regiment. After a few weeks he failed training and was kicked out but he went on to lie about being a soldier in the special forces in order to get work as a special forces advisor throughout Russia and Eastern Europe.
He has at various points claimed to be a soldier, a martial arts master, a monk, a paramedic, a mercenary, the founder of a bodyguard organisation, a police detective, and a baron in the Irish nobility.

@@TimothyYocky not anymore. Back in the 90’s though descendants of Irish clans could still apply to have their titles officially recognised. It had no actual authority but there was some symbolic significance to it.
In the early 90’s an idiot called terrence MacCarthy used false documentation to get himself named the chieftain of the MacCarthys and began calling himself the prince of Desmond, he then abused this authority to grant titles to his friends and set up a clan association to sell titles and other junk to Irish Americans.
James shortt was one of the people terrence MacCarthy granted a title to, naming him a baron and also the head of the chieftains bodyguard (these were all meaningless titles with no authority or actual power) shortt then dressed a bunch of his friends up in kilts and paraded around various places in Ireland and America, again to sell merch to Americans.
It all ended in the early 2000’s. The Belfast telegraph published a story calling terrence MacCarthy a fake (shortt tried to stop them by sending a threatening letter as the chieftains bodyguard) and the scandal ended in 2003 when the Irish government ended the practice of granting clans a courtesy title because they were sick of Terrence MacCarthys schemes.

Abagnale claims to have worked as an assistant state attorney general in the U.S. state of Louisiana, served as a hospital physician in Georgia, and impersonated a Pan American World Airways pilot who logged over two million air miles by deadheading. The veracity of most of Abagnale's claims has been questioned, and ongoing inquiries continue to confirm that they were fabricated. In 2002, Abagnale admitted on his website that some facts had been overdramatized or exaggerated, though he was not specific about what was exaggerated or omitted about his life. In 2020, journalist Alan C. Logan provided evidence he claims proves the majority of Abagnale's story was invented or at best exaggerated. The public records obtained by Logan have since been independently verified by journalist Javier Leiva.

It absolutely doesn't invade someone's first amendment right. The first amendment isn't there to protect liars and scammers, it's to protect people telling the truth from government prosecution even if the government doesn't like what the person is saying. All of the rights are there to protect the people from the government, not so people can be vile and evil. It's the same reason it's illegal to yell "fire" in a building if there isn't one. It's not an invasion of the first amendment.

In my home country Sweden, wearing a military uniform or insignia you're not entitled to is "impersonating a public servant" and is punished with a day-fine or up to six months of prison. But since you don't get any particular advantages from going around in a military uniform here, people are more likely to impersonate a police officer.

In the UK we don’t have stolen valor as a crime, but if you use to gain benefit it is classed as fraud. All British forces are issued with a service number. With that number you can identify branch of service, in the Army it also identifies corp & recruit depot.
There are simple questions that quickly expose lies. Ask any British solider from before the mid eighties what a “Rats tail” is and they should say “Part of the bolt of a SLR”

So I don’t think people should pretend to be military/have gotten military awards, but the first amendment says congress shall not make any law, (the mention of congress meaning it definitely blocks any federal law from being made that violates this) abridging the freedom of speech. There isn’t an exemption for speech that results in some kind of tangible benefit for you. There isn’t any exemptions.
So technically speaking, the stolen valor act of 2013, which amends the federal criminal code to make it a crime for a person to fraudulently claim having received a valor award specified in the Act, with the intention of obtaining money, property, or other tangible benefit by convincing another that he or she received the award, is still against the first amendment, per the Supreme Court’s ruling in Alvarez, 567 U.S. 709.

Over the years I wonder how many veterans have been thanked for their service, meals payed for in gratitude for veterans who fought for our freedom, only to find out that they want to remove at least some of our freedom by making our freedom of speech illegal. I thought the veterans served to protect our freedoms only to find out what is most precious to them is their valor. Never again will I thank a veteran for his service, because apparently their service was only to their own prestige, they care nothing for our freedom. There are already laws against fraud, it's called FRAUD! We don't need more laws which will only strip more of our rights away. I don't like fraudsters making any false claims at all, but I'm unwilling to sacrifice any more freedoms that veterans were supposed to have risked and sacrificed their lives for. They have their reward, it exists in their own minds. Why should we honor them?

Most of Abegnal's story was recently proved to be a lie. Ironically, living up to the sort of lies he tried to pass off in his made up story.
Yes, he ran away from home, and yes he did likely make it onto at least one flight in a jump seat. He did also likely commit some amount of bank fraud, but that was after he had returned home (to his parents house). He had only been away for a few weeks before returning. Pretty much all other aspects are entirely made up.
He did get a bunch of speaking gigs after the movie came out and has ripped off a huge amount of companies peddling the made up story, though. I don't think most really care what the truth is. The movie was super fun, but the man is just a delusional, pathological liar.
