Today we're chasing volcanoes on the stunningly beautiful island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. From sea level to 2,426m elevation there's no doubt that Roque de los Muchachos is an absolute monster! Not only is it the highest road in the whole of the Canary Islands, but with 2,590m elevation gain it out trumps even the most prestigious European climbs. Tourmalet, Ventoux and Stelvio step aside, it's time for Muchachos!
Start: Santa Cruz de La Palma
Length: 41.8 km
Summit: 2,426 m
Elevation Gain: 2,590 m
Average Gradient: 5.8%
Max Gradient: 12%
Departing Santa Cruz de La Palma and we're faced with a massive 41.8 kilometres of climbing ahead. This can be a daunting prospect in itself, so soak up the early morning sun and enjoy the colourful buildings and cute cobbled streets that make the capital city the perfect start for a wild island adventure!
Nicknamed "La Isla Bonita" La Palma is covered in lush green pine forests with ancient trees that will leave you energised and in awe as you pass. Stay focused, as you emerge the landscape starts to appear otherworldly, dominated by the Caldera de Taburiente volcanic crater.
My first time in La Palma and I'm so glad to be able to bring such a spectacular climb to life for you. If you have the opportunity to visit then I wholeheartedly recommend it. Not only for the climb itself but when the sun finally sets a whole new world in the sky comes alive right before your eyes!
Special thanks to our partners Ketone-IQ and Exposure Lights for helping with the production of this video. If you'd like to like to support The Col Collective and help us to create more of this content please consider making a donation to keep the rubber on the road and cameras rolling.
We hope that you enjoyed our wild adventure in La Palma and look forward to riding with you again soon.
Until the next time, be safe!

I'm living in La Palma since January 2020, I rode this climb an uncountable times. But there's much more on this gorgeous island, which offers hard climbs and technical descends with practically no flat stretches.
Vehicular traffic is scarce and every driver has a huge respect for cyclists. The weather is mild almost every month, no hot summers nor frosty winters. A real paradise !!
I own a bike shop here (Alba Nueva Bike) that offers several services, including bike rental.
Always keep on ridin' guys !! 🚴🏻♂🚴🏻♂🚴🏻♂
Couldn't agree more, La Palma is absolutely sensational! We'll be back next summer for an extended time! So much to see and explore! Got another video from the island coming soon, I think many will enjoy it too (even if it did nearly kill me!)
@@TheColCollective how long does it takes you to reach the top? And I love your videos I always look forward to them.
I still watch the descent you did some yrs back.. the one with the music (bullet train)...
Oh and my condolences to you. Your videos are an inspiration and motivation for me... 👍👍👍👍
Hey Alba!, borrowed a bike from you in Jan....planning to relocate there asap..in progress, but slowly...also been several times to the top of the world...
@@bob-pq6kd check both strava segemnts from both sides...i'm 56 and have done just over 4hrs - many are much quicker.
Wow! The quality if the video is amazing as always
Thank you for your appreciation 🙏🏻
Wow. Incredible. Spectacular video footage. Thanks for sharing this with us!
You’re welcome Larry!
Honestly, I've ridden so many of these climbs because of the beauty and inspiration that Mike shows in the production of these videos over the years, my favourite UA-cam channel.
Thank you for your appreciation 🙏🏻
New video on this channel means streaming on the big screen. Thanks for another piece of art!!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
We're from Derby but move between living in fuerteventura and uk (irish passport). Been to La Palma and fortunately made that journey to observatories. Fantastic memories. Well done.
Mike, I'm from Indonesia, I'm very happy that you have returned to make a video that motivates me to cycle
Brilliant! Back again.
Thanks so much!
love these longer - 10 to 15 minute videos.
Absolutely stunning Mike! Thank you.
You’re very welcome 🙏🏻
Mike Cotty - You have the best and most inspiring biking videos on UA-cam. You are a beast and do climbs that are far beyond this old man, but I share your love of being on the bike and being as strong as I can be. Please keep sharing your climbing adventures with us regular humans!
Thank you so much for your appreciation and positivity, it means a great deal to me. As long as you’re watching I’ll try and keep making these videos. Ride safe and thank you again 🙏🏻
Hell yeah. I LOVE this channel!!!!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love that you stayed and got the night sky shots! ✌️
Unbelievable up there!!!! 🌟
Thanks for another great video Mike😎👍
You're very welcome, really appreciate you watching!
Another gorgeous episode. The videography is spectacular! I just wish my legs matched my inspiration.
Thank you so much for your appreciation 🙏🏻
Welcome back. It has been a while. 👍👍
Thanks for your support Patrick!
Awesome video, Mike, as always!
Thanks so much Robert!
Up there is another sight. The blue and green lakes. Remember in 1971 when the boat stopped here as I emigrated to Australia. A bus tour took us up to them. That was pretty high as well.
Whoaaaaaa!!!!
Unreal climb. Great vid as usual. Just as my motivation was beginning to wane 🙂👍🚴 Thanks Mike !
One of my 2 favorite channels.
Thanks for your support!!
Great to have you back making videos again!
Thanks so much for watching!
The world's steepest island!! Incredible climb, hardest ride I've ever done.
Such a beauty. We’ll have another treat from La Palma coming in the next few weeks. Oh, and this one will be steep! 😅
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Spectacular!❤
Thank you!!!!
Wow! - stunning, one of your best videos. The quality gets better and better and the climbs inspirational as always.
Thank you so much for your appreciation Kevin. 🙏🏻
Another great video👌👍🎉🎉 and another climb to add to the list😎.
Just watched the new “ gravel video” on Wahoo SYSTM….fantastic, will have to take the gravel bike next time I go to Gran Canaria🤓.
Another breathtaking video. Thanks.
Thank you so much!
Stunning!
Thank you Dan! 🙏🏻
An awesome ride....quiet and beautiful, good call out on the lack of any water/shops up the ride as well as at the top. you have to take care with what you carry but better to have extra than trying to go light.
Glad you enjoyed it!! Yep, always better to take more water and food than you think you’ll need! ✌🏼
Wow! Just nuts. I'm used to your excellent camera work but wasn't expecting to see a cycling video where one has views looking down at the clouds! This is not just a great cycling video, but a fantastic travel video as well. The telescopes are impressive.
I can see how a gravel bike would give you lower gears, but am wondering why you didn't go with lightweight slick tires, given that the road is so nice, and that the climb is so challenging!
Thanks so much for your appreciation! It’s an incredible road, my video only captures so much, the reality is even more inspiring. For the bike, I was in the Canary Islands for a few weeks and wanted to do some gravel too, and could only travel with one bike. Glad you enjoyed the video ☺️
Always so inspiring, Mike! Thank you!
Thank you Wendy 🙏🏻
Amazing place! Amazing video! Congrats!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
I did some of my Astrophysics degree work top of Mount Teide in Tenerife with one of the big telescopes, the landscape there is amazing and exactly as you described like being on the moon. The skies are incredible. La Palma looks incredible too.
Wow, it would be amazing to study more astrophysics in the Canary Islands, the sky is simply incredible. La Palma is a beautiful island. Highly recommended. 👍🏼
Ah mate what a fantastic video again ❤
Big thank you for your support!! 🐮
Absolutely superb
Encore une fois, merci pour l’aventure Mike
De rien 🙏🏻
You are back in style! Thanks for the epic video and inspiration. Also saw your behind the scenes adventure in the making of this epic!! That’s another video waiting to be released 😂
Happy to hear you saw some of the behind the scenes Mark! Had a few “moments” to get myself out of on this one! 😂
Amazing, I've climbed Teide ,this looks like it's on the list ❤
Definitely get it on the list, you will not be disappointed!!
Beautiful road, insane mountain, Great Video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!!!
Stunning!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
One of my favourite climbs and expert and inspirational footage from The Col Collectiive as always 👍 Curious to know which island you are yet to ride? I’ve done them all apart from El Hierro which is the hardest to get to 😊
Same for me Andy, yet to explore El Hierro! Thanks for tuning in!
Fabulous and inspiring, as always! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
We're so back!
Yes! Thanks for watching!
Hola, long lo00ng time no video. viewer 860 145th like (before watching☺☺ ). All the best
Thanks so much for your support 🙏🏻
Davvero un video che merita tantissimi complimenti 👏, bravissimo come sempre e meravigliosa questa salita 🤩. Mi viene in mente di portarmi la gravel e stare tre mesi alle Canarie 😍
Thank you so much for your appreciation. If you have your gravel bike in La Palma you may never go back home! 😜
Such great content, thank you
Thank you kindly 🙏🏻
Grazie.
Thank you for your support, it’s hugely appreciated 🙏🏻
Thank you!
You're welcome!
@@TheColCollective Mr. Cotty, keep it going, you're true "Cycling Inspiration and Education" and that's all it matter! Your goal, and our delight! My only "complaint" is that you are making my bucket list longer, while time is not on my side. So be it! With all your exquisite filming and pedaling
beautiful!!!
Thank you!!🙏🏻
Sooo happy to see your vids again. Did you switch out to a gravel bike? Or is it just the bars?
For this one I was on a gravel bike, not necessarily needed for this climb as it’s on road. That said the road conditions are a bit sketchy in places so not a bad choice overall. 👌🏼
@@TheColCollective Nice. A couple more weeks and I can pick up my new gravel bike (after selling my road bike. :( )
The views make the suffering worth it 😍👌🍻
Always!!!
Tienes que subir la que seguramente es una de las subidas mas duras del mundo, creo que la segunda mas dura
LLANO DE LAS ANIMAS, 15KM con medias del 12,5% y con tramos de mas del 20%
Filmed and coming soon! Thought we would start with Muchachos before getting totally insane!!! :0
@@TheColCollective esperando a verlo💪💪💪

That’s home, the van I spend most of the time in “on tour” to film and capture these videos. No place like home ☺️
