It won't cut circulation. You can go extremely tight because the tape will loosen as you walk on it. I am an athletic therapist and have done a lot of these.
Yes, taping will provide external support, especially if you run on trails and there are ruts/loose gravel that increase the risk of injury. Make sure you get taped by a professional because you don't want any discomfort from cut off circulation or awkward limited range of motion.
You are correct in that you do not want to pull up on the instep or into inversion with the typical eversion sprain. The tension is placed around the heel in the case of heel locks. Therefore, I do show starting behind the calf and also under the foot. Thanks for your input. The worst sprain I have seen in over 10,000 tapings are with Active Ankle (hard plastic) or ASO (lace-up/strap) braces on.

That was excellent. Without having seen ankle taping before I had been taping my foot up for the last few days in a similar fashion but made some errors which you just fixed. I have a very intensive course next week and for the last 2 weeks my ankle has hurt on the inside, just below the ankle. Any idea what this is? And is this the right taping for it?
Well pads can help with comfort, but there are also different ways to tape up the ankle. Maybe this one isn't as comfortable. Personally I like using this one (Ankle Taping 101 - Part 1 and Ankle Taping 101 - Part 2)
@AlexxisPlata yes you can and I recommend it on trails, especially trails with ruts and rocks and branches if you are susceptible to inversion ankle sprains, especially in the fall, when leaves have fallen and cover those obstacles. Just had my first athlete sprain his ankle on the trails. Most definitely a good option!!
@jefcul11 yep, that and the fact that he used so many layers of prewrap, that he could cause blisters, and the first horse shoe should curve around the heel enough to keep from having to wrinkle over like his job at 1:24. I also personally prefer to do continuous heel locks and continuous figure eights, to save time. When you have to tape 15+ ankles for basketball players in less than 30 minutes for pre-game, it helps to use continuous techniques.
Your hands are fast, dude!! even Bruce Lee would have been proud of that taping speed. I don't know if your tape is better than what i'm useing, but mine is so hard to roll out... What is the name of the brand u use?
the tape i belive is johnson&johnson athletic tape. If its not then it would be Blue jay tape. But my guess is johnson& johnson becasue it is really easy to rip and its the most common type of tape to use.
will doing something like this make wearing cleated shoes hard becuase i play soccer and i hvae sprined my ankle many times now and no braces seem to work would this give me some more support and fit in cleats comfortable?
awww thank you thank you thank you! i have a quiz tomorrow ans we barely learned this today! O_O u did it exactly like my teacher! thank you so mucho again!
Athletic trainer... and they're not "lifting" type personal trainers. They handle prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. They are present in more high schools, colleges and definitely professional athletics. I am even seeing them down into the middle school age, etc now.
Is this honestly what they do? this seems like really really tight tape and it seems like he will have absolutely no movement at all. would this be a good taping for basketball?
@Allaboutthemojo you're gonna want to take it off as soon as you're done with whatever you're doing. If you leave the tape on too long your ankle may start to weaken.
is it okay to tape it if you dont got any injury just for protection? I play football for college team and could you please give me information regarding all those tape.name of all those tapes so i can buy it. cheers
OK soooo when i tape my ankle and foot up i cant really feel my foot when im playing in the game and it bothers me alot.... i try to loosen up when i rap it up but its the same result. any tips?
Ankle needs to be kept in 90 degrees throughout the taping. This was not done. Since this is for an inversion ankle sprain it does matter where you start your medial heel lock. It should be from behind the leg. Lateral heel lock should start from instep going under the foot. Figure eight should be started through the instep giving lateral support to ankle. Following this video you could make incorrect choices and give the majority of support to the medial side instead of the lateral.
hey thanks for the vid, but i have a question if anyone could answer? like i sprained my ankle, but not major or anything. My coach told me to just do the figure 8's. and just some X's. do you think thats enough? &like i have sprained it 3 times, only one of them i had to lay off it for a week, but like yeah oh and i play basketball , but mainly baseball which is year round for me. or well softball cause imma girl (:
I wish I would have done this years ago now severe arthritis has taken a toll trust me the price of tape is well worth it if you can't do it get a swede o ankle brace
Well done video. HOWEVER the medial heel lock was wrong. Pulling up from the instep towards the back of the leg brings the ankle into inversion - the opposite of what the intention of this tape job is. The medial heel lock should come down from behind the leg to underneath the foot. The lateral heel lock was done correctly.
Instead of doing all this, couldn't you wear some kind of boot if you're going cross country. I have thought about running in tactical assault boots to run in, but don't want to do that if I could still go over on my ankle. I have been using a strong ankle wrap made of blue material that I bought from a shop that you wrap in a figure of 8 then attach and I sprained it again as if there was nothing there.
Thanks! We didn't do the figure 8's in my class but this is very similar to what we learned. This video is a great help.

the prewrap that he puts on (the yellow tape) protects the skin from irritation and the hair from being pulled because it only sticks to itself :]
You cover it all (no pun intended). Thanks for posting this - very helpful for students!
thank you so much!! i watched so many videos and yours was the only one that actually made sense!!
This is great... I reference this every few months - it seems someone i know is always twisting an ankle and i have to help them out!

Very nice work. I will try it tonight on my basketball game and i will let you know.
he's fast, efficient. explains clearly. very smooth watching experience.
@AlexxisPlata I also do cross country and i sprained my ankle 3 times running the same trail and thanks to your questions no more sprains! Thank you

Best video I've seen yet.
@fishcrackers its called prewrap, you can get it at any drugstore. It is normally describes as "Self stick does not stick to skin"
most helpful video ive seen yet .thanks

This is gonna save me so much money. Thank you!
this is exaclty what I needed...
Thank you!!!
and thank god for utube
@IrishElite7 You can do it either way. It just really depends on what it's needed for.
You can get that colored tape for cheap at any store that sells horse supplies.
I was wondering if this is better than buying an ankle support instead?
the tape i belive is johnson&johnson athletic tape. If its not then it would be Blue jay tape. But my guess is johnson& johnson becasue it is really easy to rip and its the most common type of tape to use.
would taping be better than using any ankle brace?

Great tutorial
Does your ankle still have mobility for like basketball cause that seems like you wont be able to move your foot
can you wear shoes with this? and how often should you change the tape job?
Just did this on my left ankle... Sprained my ankle last year and it was hurting alot this week...
the ankle should be dorsiflexed to a neutral position or about 90 degrees, forming a right angle to the shin.
Thanks so much
@awesomenator6 i have the same question. did this work for soccer?
Is this honestly what they do? this seems like really really tight tape and it seems like he will have absolutely no movement at all.
would this be a good taping for basketball?
Could you please explain how come Active Ankle and other braces make for worse sprains?
How restrictive is this wrap when you try to kick a soccer ball?
thanks guys that was great i need practice, but its good so far, not as clean as yours but it worked thanks, great for taekwondo training
THANK YOU
@dcmholliday I tried it. It seemed to help, but it bugged me a bit and it's hard to put your socks on and take them off.
I have a minor ankle sprain. Would it be OK to wear this right after if I was to go play soccer? Would it help support my ankle?
how long can you keep this on
how long should you keep it wrapped until you have to RE wrap it?
Umh... when we may open this taping from my ankle? how long the immobolization?
Will it work for a soccer player??
Of course, it will work for basically any sport.
Thanks Andrew.. he help me a Lot!
Good for basketball?! Thanks for the help
could you tell me the name of the yellow tape/
how much pressure do you put when you tape it?
Great video , ima practice this way.

@meggysoccer09 Yes dorsiflexed to a position that forms a right angle with the shin.
