the guy you followed wasn't trying to steal something from you but in old medinas that's a famous trick trying to tell people that they are lost so they will seem like giving you a favor to show you the right way and after taking you to another destination he will ask for a tip
I’m sure that was what he was doing. We have just heard stories of those “tips” being forced at times when other men come out at the end of the tour, so it’s more like stealing. Still wouldn’t suggest anyone blindly follow those people , but yes he was probably just going to ask for money since that is the traditional trick.
