  • Enter a vanished and unjust world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver...There's Aibileen, raising her seventeenth white child and nursing the hurt caused by her own son's tragic death; Minny, whose cooking is nearly as sassy as her tongue; and white Miss Skeeter, home from College, who wants to know why her beloved maid has disappeared. Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. No one would believe they'd be friends; fewer still would tolerate it. But as each woman finds the courage to cross boundaries, they come to depend and rely upon one another. Each is in a search of a truth. And together they have an extraordinary story to tell...Buy The Help by Kathryn Stockett on Waterstones.com: bit.ly/mRwrBc or in your local Waterstone's bookshop (bit.ly/mRwrBc)

I believe that Racism is taught. When toddlers and little kids of all colors are together, they all play great together. It is adults that teach children racism.

yup and all races do that. and get mad like one chic who threatened me for saying thats some bs how dar eu teach your child that. thats not empowering u are teaching her to be a victim and a bigot and slandering anyone who doesnt fit that narrative. thats racism. racism can happen to anyone of any color and its never alright no matter who does it.

In this scene, one of the voiceovers told the story of a mean, nasty daughter whose mother wrote into her will that the maid was to continue working with her family. Mostly, the mother knew no one would work with her daughter and it was her way of ensuring she had help. The maid found no one else would hire her. The maid was effectively "given" to the nasty daughter. The woman's hurt statement "How can someone leave a grown woman to her daughter. It ain't right." Heartbreaking.... you have to really hear through all the voices with Skeeter in Viola's home.

I loved the movie until I read the book. The movie is sorely lacking in the most viscerally disturbing aspects of the book. It was sadly formulaic and simplistic. I think they tried to tone the film down so as to offend fewer people and make it more of a feel-good chick flick. Please read the book. It's heart-rending and beautiful but also very, very sad.

Please keep in mind that the author of the book "The Help" employs 'help' to raise her own child(ren), and care for her own house - in the 21st century!! How do I know - the author gave a reading of her book here in N.C. and during the Q&A session mentioned this tidbit! I asked if she knew the persons that she employed, and knew how they felt about her family (specifically, her children), and her response was 'noooo, do you think I should ask her??" I've never seen the movie, and damned sure haven't read the book!!

I love this movie but I find it a little disingenuous at times specifically the notion that black maids or housekeepers raised white children. I'm 57 and we had maids in our home off and on for about the 1st 10 years of my life at least until my sister got old enough to care for us or at least watch after us.
We were not remotely rich or wealthy and my mother belonged to no social clubs. She had help in her home because she had to work to make ends meet with her 5 children and husband. We were very fond of most of our maids but not all, but even of those of whom we were most fond, I can say did not raise us.
They looked after us while our parents were gone just like any other babysitter would for the few hours they were with us every day. They made sure that the rules and guidelines that my parents set in raising their children were enforced. Raising a child and rearing a child is a lot more than just being present during the day. Skeeter's mother was right to be outraged when she alleged that Constantine raised her.
If you think about it at least when it comes to my mother and her friends who all worked jobs and had help in their home they were likely in the same predicament as their maids were and that they left their children in the home with someone else so they could work for a living.

My father is in his 60's and he was raised mostly by his family's black maid. Even after she left the home, he called her 'Mama' and made sure she was taken care of in her old age. His mother was upper-middle class and had very similar views to Hilly in this movie. He always said he had two mothers; one who gave him life and the other who taught him how to live. I think it depends on where you were, but I wouldn't call this movie disingenuous.

This IS FACT..... Sincerely, a so called "White" woman from Ireland -literally as white, no colour, see through as it gets!! (Ffs people wise da fu©K up!.... : some people have very little melanin in their skin ie: (the so called caucasian/white) ; some have a little bit more, (they're referred to, generally speaking as Asian, Hispanic, middle Eastern, Native American, Mouri, native Australians & New Zealand etc) & yome people have quite a bit: (the so-called Black African; African American etc) but its simply a matter of how much melanin each person possesses, that's it!!
TBH, all these labels are highly derogatory in my opinion, since we're ALL from ONE Race at the end of the day: The HUMAN RACE!!!..
You're supposed to be the enlightened Country in the Western hemisphere, light-years ahead of everyone else, & ye all seem to be Stone Cold Convinced that we're a tiny island of spud licking, inbred, constantly inebriated to the degree at which it would Kill other people, Simpleton, sheep shaggers (that Wales, by the way!!) who live on Guinness & spuds and nothing else!!??!! But ur "enlightenment" is just looking ridiculous & hilariously ironic right now. Ye took 500 steps in the right direction with Obama (though, nobody's perfect: it IS politics) and 100,000steps backwards with Trump... I mean, ffs he makes Sarah Palin look like the ultimate politician; I'd sooner have had her, as she's most of the above, just not a flaming narcissist on top of it all like Trump. And she's honest- the orange blimp couldn't lie straight in bed!!!
And yet, ur the ones with a batshit crazy, rabid, racist, with penile ADHD & in horndog tiny Pervy fingers (who has no shame going on international TV & admitting that he'd basically love to screw his own daughter!?!) and advocates sexually assaulting other women at whim, with about two braincells (otherwise known as Melania, who was an illegal immigrant when he met her; and Ivanka) to his name!!
