- The Mercedes GLE is best looked at as a heavily revised version of the old ML SUV. Despite the new name, it still looks very similar, but now has a more curvaceous front end with smart design details, an upgraded interior and a wide choice of engines and trim levels - included a high-performance Mercedes-AMG GLE 63.
It's not cheap, but the GLE comes with lots of equipment and the appeal of a Mercedes badge on the front. We see if it's up to the task of competing with newer SUV rivals.

I think the design looks good; sporty but not vulgar. The interior doesn't look space-age, but it's a damn sight nicer than most cars.
When I first saw the interior of this car I immediately thought 'wow!' it's simple and clean and looks how a car should be. One of the things which puts me off some cars and even some models of the Mercedes is that they tend to overdo it with the interior and it can look a bit too flash. I think with this car they have the balance right between making it look classy, but at the same time still keeping a simple car look to it. Lexus also seem to do this well in their cars too.

Nowadays if you don't have big screens inside, people think its dated. But it is the opposite. Screens in a car are hideous. You can't change my mind.

I literally picked up a 2018 GLE 350 today as a courtesy car and his interview is actually spot on. The interior is supposed to be luxurious - no chance! The switch gear is cheap and not ergonomic at all with many buttons being badly placed, it's got a stupid squared off steering wheel, the binnacles are not clear with the wrong speeds being emphasised (i.e. 40, 60, 80mph) and the seats feel rubbery and you sit on them rather than in them. There's no keyless entry, no auto high beam, no auto or remote folding mirrors (you have to have the ignition on and fold them before opening the door - yeah that's clever) and the ride is very fidgety and unsettled, especially at higher speeds. Lots of turbo lag, tiny wing mirrors, very artificial steering with little feel and it aggressively tries to return to centre all the time and a £63k price tag lol. Let's not forget the left stalk being both the indicators, lights, front wipers, rear wipers, washers etc It is very quiet though, the glass is thick. The right stalk being the transmission selector isn't really my thing but it's not terrible either. Just a little odd.
I really don't get all the hype for German cars. I had a BMW 330D and it feels like a toy car when you get, with tiny switch gear and you feel very enclosed along with the tiny windscreen. The steering was very artificial on that also. I much prefer cars where you can actually feel the road and know when it's reaching the limits rather than relying on the car and end up going beyond the point of no return.

Funny how he mentioned this ML-turned GLE is getting dated but suggests checking out the even older Discovery.
Discovery is 6 years old now with a replacement waiting in the wings. It is not an alternative on any level...

This cars interior is much nicer in wood trim, still ML-s never had an impressive interior to begin with. This channel really misses Mat.
As a car trimmer easly can say that the guy doesn’t know what artificial leather mean. It is plastic that breaks when the sun is so strong and the cold weather work as well. Welcome to car upholstery world. And we can help with it - no problem !!! ✌️

I really do think it looks dated, indeed. It's the same Volvo has in their not yet fully updated cars like the V40: the panel under the dashboard screen really is getting quite ridiculous with the number buttons and all. It's very much subpar in comparison to for instance the Q7 and even Mercedes' own C, E and S class. Compare the interior designs; the time difference basically is 10 years (except the digital screen).

I have a 2017 GLE 350 designo, it's brilliant, solid smooth and decent mpg, miles better than the range rover sport

--whereas. ..like in latest Q7. ..see how much different styling they did....(.specially back-lights. ..which looks awefull. ..means the very heavy presence of a 7 seater. ...Warlord type car..now looks horrible from rear lights -!!)...-but talking about this..new changed version of ml class..new gle class..looks perfect. ..no problem with little change of lights on front....but rear square type lights of Mercedes -design engineers ..which wasn't changed & kept as it is..Square -square. ..is such a great idea...that's why I felt like leaving my idea in comment section...that...rear tail lights which were kept...squared. ...& wasn't much changed ....kept. ..the heavy bulky...Warlord type...SUV look of this car....Which is thing worth praising to Mercedes car model architects. ..'salute u guys .'
--&plz in future too...don't change the lights too much....which usually changes the very look & feel of the car...-!!!!
....-like little example..talking about other Audi car models...eg.audi A6's. ...light styling front & rear both were so good....& gives such heavy & stylish type look....till 2010. ..but after that Audi changed. ..light style so much. .that I started hating that A6 car which though I loved so much...
therefore bought Mercedes E-250 CDI. ..beautiful car...-!!!
--& see...how much BMW X5's lights were changed now...though it don't looks that bad...but...till 2013 X5's looks look superb. ..
...but Range-Rover...sports -evouge. ..they too changed their light style after 2010-11'ish...which actually they did...much better. ..they changed but very subtle & didn't changed the square symetery ...of lights..which rather looks good..
...& Mercedes GL class latest is car of Mafia Dons -!!

I don't get how the interior looks "dated" ? It's got an infotainment system that he rated highly and regardless of build quality that has nothing to do with how modern it looks. To me it looks like any other Mercedes interior

+Undiscovered UA-camr The interior DOES look a little dated because it's from the old Merc-Generation (it's still based on the old W 212 E-Class). Take a look at the interior of the smaller GLC, that looks much more modern. The build quality is still very good.
Every car gets old and there's nothing wrong with it, the M-Class was extremely good when it was new. But it's time for a new generation.

A huge number of the motor press seem to be convinced that the new XC90 fight right alongside the best of SUVs. Like The MB GLE, and the likes. Moreover, many consider the Discovery not to be among those.
Personally, i prefer a Land Rover. If a Land Rover for some reason cant be in my hands, i take a Mercedes.

This guy is a great auto review reporter. He's not afraid to tell it like it is. He projects just the right amount of smart-ass-ness. He has a bit of that Top Gear quality
