Weird that The Netherlands are ruling skating and field hockey for decades, but ice hockey is still almost non-existent here...

JD ice hockey is to expensive, a stick cost 120 euros and it only last like 2 weeks max
I know it is expensive and I can understand the travel costs. Nonetheless I wonder how valid that argument is when you look at the 26 Dutch Olympic Equestrian medals (10 gold, 13 silver). For a jumping game you need to travel far and a lot too. With your freaking horse that is (a horse being much more expensive than any ice hockey outfit). Equestrianism is more expensive and more cumbersome than ice hockey, but still far more popular. While for ice hockey, in general, you just need ice, skates and a stick. (You can even practice it on rollerblades on tarmac.) I understand we have less frozen lakes nowadays, but that doesn't explain why we never had any noticeable accomplishment in ice hockey as a nation during the days of Sjoukje Dijkstra, Kees Verkerk, Ard Schenk, Piet Kleine, Evert van Benthem and Yvonne van Gennip. And with "noticeable accomplishment" I do not mean winning an olympic medal, but the Dutch barely even participated!? (1980 being the exception.) By the way, most sports require a lot of traveling, time and dedication, especially at higher levels.

The Dutch obsession with ice is even older than that. Look at Dutch landscape paintings. When the Plague was over in the world, there was a relatively cold period in history. It was called 'The little ice age'. Funnily enough that age fell together with a prosporous time for the Netherlands. (15th-16th-17th century) In that time there were tons of painters making winter landscapes and so many people were skating. That is proof that it's quite an old tradition.
In the 20th century there was the first official 'Elfstedentocht' (Eleven Cities Tour). It's a skating event bigger than anything. You skate 200 km around all 11 old cities of Friesland (province of NL). This competition is the most important of all skating prizes there are. Sven Kramer, one of the best skaters in the world, said once "If the Elfstedentocht will come at the same time as the Olympic games, I shall go back to skate it." Sadly, the last one was in 1997. After that year, the ice wasn't good enough in the following winters to do so. It's that imfamous! If you win at the world cup, it's impressive, you win a distance and become world champion, that's most impressive, you win the olympics, you are a legend, you win the Eleven Cities Tour, you are a demigod!

I think that "Eleven Town Tour" is a more suitable translation of _Elfstedentocht_ than yours. Cities are Randstad size.
City is a place with a Cathedral in the official defenition, so indeed you're right. ;). Only Leeuwarden had one inn the past, but that's gone now
Nope wrong! All those so called 'Towns' are offically cities, with city rights! So the eleven city tour is a correct way of saying it :) they were cities back in the day, and because of the 'Elfstedentocht' the city rights were never provoked. ^^

I remember the talk of dropping the 10k after the NL being to dominant and the distance not being to camera friendly. You know that you're dominant when people want to nerf a sport just for you to get at least 1 medal less than you already have.
I love watching the 10K even though it's pretty obvious that the Dutch are going to take it it's a great event to watch much more fun than the short distances in my personal opinion

Fun fact: teachers over here stop their classes to watch the Olympics when it's time for a Dutch skater to skate. Skating really is quite a big deal in the Netherlands haha

Men's 10000m: Jorrit Bergsma, Sven Kramer and Bob de Jong
Women's 1500m: Jorien ter Mors, Ireen Wüst and Lotte van Beek
You pronounce Dutch name as if they're German
I was brought up in the Eighties in the northern part of the country. It is not just the ovals, it is in the lifestyle of the people. Whenever there was ice on open water during winter, you were on it. Every village has a communal ice ring, a shallow field that is filled up with water during the winter. I had skates since I was three. We also had a lot of irrigation canals you could skate on, from dawn till dusk. When there was Ice, you got a day free from school for skating. School competitions were organised. Village competitions were organised. Hack even street competitions were organised on the canal at the end of our street. If the winter conditions prolonged, recreational (and competitive) tours could be skated from town to town. It was so much fun. Now I don’t live there anymore and winters have gotten warmer too. But still, being able to host the first marathon on natural Ice is still a thing of honour in the Netherlands. And of course everybody is still waiting for the next Elfstedentocht, but since that encompasses 200 km on natural ice, the waiting will be long and maybe never again rewarded.

Actually, another thing to consider is that the "Elfstedentocht" (Eleven City Tour) is the most famous and anticipated sporting event in the entire country; and pretty much the only thing people can talk about all winter is if we are finally going to have one again -- although Global Warming means we may very well never will again, which makes me unbearably sad. D; I mean, given that it's easily the longest-distance Speed Skating / Leisure Skating event in the world at as-close-as-makes-no-difference 200 km long, it probably plays a part too.
Sven Kramer never won Olympic gold on 1000m. Also: a video about Dutch skating, not mentioning the Elfstedentocht...? Anyway, the main reason the Dutch are so dominant in speed skating I think is because there are only about seven or eight countries worldwide that really take speed skating seriously, Holland probably being the only country in which it is considered a really, REALLY big deal.

That makes senses. There are still some 15 countries wordlwide that take speed skating seriously. But in the last ten/twenty years speed skating has lost a lot of popularity in favor of ice hockey, short track and even skiing, except in The Netherlands. Where are Austria, Sweden, Finland, Germany and former superpower Norway nowadays?!

Nope! A Dutch-Canadian speed skater is to thank for that. Great job by Ted-Jan Bloemen (setting an Olympic record and also holding the World record at the distance), and Kramer couldn't crack the top 3; Jorrit Bergsma won the Silver though and Italy the Bronze.

Good to see that *their investments did pay off.* Netherlands did invest into ice skating rings. It only makes sense that they get the returns of their investment. It's also good for the public health in the Netherlands. Imagine the amount of ice skating disco clubs in the Netherlands :-)

I believe Katie Couric, because she confirmed that the Dutch are born with skate-like appendages instead of feet. So, that's why they made wooden shoes, so those skate-feet would fit. Maybe because we have about 40 indoor speedskating tracks more than the USA in total, and some schools have skating for gymlesson. And if you are good at it and live in the north of the netherlands you can go to a special school in Groningen.
we dutch love iceskating i remember when i was young we could iceskate pretty much every winter but nowadays it doesnt freeze anymore for good ice global warming is a sad thing

What part of facilities with olympian size tracks did you miss?
There is most of your answer, if you invest in such things, and people are trained properly at them, you are bound to have constant and fresh supply of athletes that can dominate a particular sport. In this case skating.
A long history of ice skating + investing in good facilities = your answer. :)
Owen Westerhout well this year the dutch team trained with special suits that could keep track with how far the skaters would bend their knees during the race, you can probably find more about it with a quick search

My favourite Dutch model was a speed skater when she was younger
Actually, most of the Dutch professional skaters come from only one of our twelve provinces: Friesland. If Friesland were an independent country, it would have only 650,000 inhabitants, but it would still be the most successful country in long track speed skating. (If we start counting in the 1970s. Before that, Norway was more successful.)
Do you know why the best skaters are from Friesland? I'm Frisian and would like to know. :)

Katie should have mentioned that with global warming (concocted by her political party), the Dutch will soon transition to be the dominant water skiers.
Not to take anything away from the Dutch athletes but it also helps that this sport is almost impossible to practice in most any country which are not the Netherlands. I like to speed roller skates (just for fun, I am oldish), I had chance to try short track skates on ice but I have not idea
where I could get into a long course ice track or even where could I buy the skates.
In roller skating and short track you see a lot of Dutch but you see a lot of other country as well which
probably could also produce good long distance skaters...if they had any facility.

The netherlands have private sponsored speed skating teams like Jumbo-Visma which uses resources of the famous Jumbo-visma cycling team. In difference to other countrys where the athletes have to search individualy for sponsors

Depends what you mean by skate, cause probably the majority has or sometimes skates but if you mean as a real hobby it's probably quite a lot less football is still the no.1 sport by far.
i think most people have ice skated in their lives but it is only seen as a sport by a few.
most people do it for fun. although global warming has made outdoor skating less.. well.. possible. a lot less ice lately.
Dire Wolfy Well that depends on what you mean. I think everyone has been on the ice at some point. Its a land of canals and rivers which freeze over during the winter. Your parents take you skating during the winter like they take you swimming during the summer. So skating is common but skating as a sport not so much. Funny the dutch have a need for speed....we don't see much figure skating happening.

I love the examples given at the intro🙄 USA women’s hockey beat Canada in Pyongyang. The USA is dominant in so many sports I think is ridiculous they were left out completely.
I think short track is better than long track, there is more strategy and variety in short track

Why Norway finally is the biggest winter games champion in history is because they have a lot of mountains to ski on and ski events in Olympic games have all variations unlike only to few events of long speed skating. If long speed skating had more event types the dutch could become match norway as a true winter games powerhouse.
Please do the same for Russia in Figure Skating, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Synchronised Swimming
The main secret is: we eat a lot of STAMPPOT especially during the winter.
