Removing the cab from my Silverado and gutting it to appease the cab swap "experts"

- Everyone that didn't watch the entire previous videos or understand how impossible it is to find a rust-free cab around me have told me it is much easier to just swap the cab. A few even accused me of not being able to handle a cab swap (apparently, they are new here). So now I will do everything that would have had to be done to swap the cab, just to paint it. Of course, we don't have to wait months for the state to retag it, but the experts didn't take that into account along with everything else. I'm starting to question if these people behind their keyboards that have never done any of this kind of work really are the experts they claim to be. LMAO The work in this video took less than 2 hours for those of you watching the clock.

I love the attention to detail. Not many people would strip the entire cab for paint. I would guess that most would simply mask off and give the standard $200 paint job. Thanks for setting a higher bar of expectations.
Why would you want (let alone _need)_ to strip the coatings that were applied in the best possible manner, at the factory? I would take the gloss off the original paint, wipe it down with solvent and spray away.

The heater box had to come out anyway to get the glass out of it and I can’t stand when firewalls on the engine side are mismatched!
@@vehcor I hear you....here in Thailand I see rebuilders pretty much strip everything out and rebuild then paint the bay a tropical color of sorts prior to reassembly!

It is awesome to see the level of detail that is going into this truck. As others have said, not many people would strip the entire cab down to repaint it. Can't wait to see what the new color is going to be!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this episode. The amount of work you put in to these episodes is impressive. Thank you. On another note, I have a 1958 VW beetle which I restored and it has the oil bath air filter on it.
I have 2000 V6 version of this truck that's in really good shape. Learning a lot about it in this episode. By the way, my wife's 2nd language is sarcasm so she gets you.

That felt like a huge attention to detail as I sat watching, I realised that I am well past retirement age and why I am no longer doing much of anything except watch and enjoy things being done the right way by people who still can do them. Perhaps it will be no surprise that throttle cables, (and complex mechanical throttle linkages as an alternative), oil bath air filters, rod-brakes and a host of other almost forgotten, but largely unlamented automotive items, are not unknown to me.
The sarcastic humor is what makes this channel one of the best :D. Aside from all the cool work you do.. that too you know..
One of my favorite builds so far. Had no idea you were going to go this level of detail. Going to be a very cool truck when done.
And this is why I could never paint my cars any other colors other than what was applied at the factory, too much hassle having to strip every single thing on it and then having to deal with DMV, having to change the vehicle color on the registration/title then what was there previously. My hats off to you Scott for this tedious amount of work, I'm sure it'll pay off in the end.

I would buy one of your cars with no hesitation. Always impressed how you go the extra mile. Also loved the walker in the beginning.
I think his Subscribers alone would create one very long queue waiting for a Scott rebuild. It could have 200,000 miles on it and you still get that _new car_ smell.
I did a heater core on one of these a while back before UA-cam tutorials were a big thing. It is possible for one person to get the HVAC assembly out with the dash and seats still in the vehicle. With the dash assembly unbolted (except the main bolts left partially screwed in on the driver side), the dash assembly will lift up and out just enough for the HVAC assembly to slide out through the floor board. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily it went.
It's so nice to watch it "Done right". Wish there were more mechanics like you.

I like how you show the shadow gnome how do to things. When I was in the shadow gnome phase I was supposed to somehow magically know how to do things I'd not done before.

Watching the cab teardown helped me realize what that black plastic liner is on the inside of the firewall/foot well. Didn't know it was all one piece... Was wanting to replace the one in my truck, as it's literally crumbling to pieces. Looks like it's going to require a complete dash removal to make it happen!
Except for a salvage/ junk yard, I think this is the first time I've seen behind the dash of one of these truck cabs. It's also the first time I actually paid attention on how to remove on without breaking it in pieces.
Totally amazes me on how you can keep all those pieces together AND know how they all go back together AND with the correct nuts and bolts! haha Great work Scott!!!

A lot of work for an older truck. Profit or personal use? Enjoy your channel. Daughter crunched her 2000 es300 and I fixed it because you taught me how. Hood, core support, headlights, radiator, condensor and fans replaced with U Pull it parts and craigslist. No airbags or else it would have been "in the pile". Thanks.

Watching this gives me a real appreciation for technicians that work on vehicles that require body removeable to access certain parts of the running gear. That must be a real nightmare on a big SUV.

I hear you on the color change. It would always drive me nuts to see jams not done, or where you pull a small panel and the original color is there. It also drives me nuts when people take the easy way out and paint an engine bay that is supposed to be body color black unless that's the body color they are going with. And when they use more time and money in tape and masking than if they would just strip it down properly to begin with.
You made quick work of that disassembly! My first truck I got as a teenager in 1979 had an oil bath air cleaner, 77 F100-302 3 speed on the column, never really understood the need for it 🤷. ✌🏻
I am very impressed with your steadfastness in your abilities to disassemble and reassemble, I am also curious how many hours are involved in this project.
A Lot of work in an old truck. You refer to it as "MY" rather than "Our" which you seem to use for vehicles you are going to flip.

You might be on to something here with the idea of taking an auctioned off vehicle and bringing back from the possible squisher and giving it another shot. I'm loving this silverado job you're on and I don't think anyone else is doing this kind of thing. Trick is picking the right vehicles. Oh and as an osteoarthritis sufferer in both knees and one hip.........forget that intro lol😜

The level of detail and quality of work coming out of this shop is as good as it gets. I do have a question, though. Color change done right is a big job. Is the time spent completely stripping the cab to change the color worth it on a truck as old as this one, will it pay for itself when you sell it? Honest question, since I don't know what the market is like around Chicago for a rust-free GM truck from the early/mid 2000s.
Scott, you're so f-in funny. Years ago I got
a 62-D300 that came with a surveyor's box on the back. I junked that & built a 10' stake bed for it. Someone had painted the cab ugly brown with a paint roller ! So I bought an entire 73 d-100 with a seized 360 in it for $200. Then I put the 73's cab & auto trans & (power steering & brakes) onto the 62 frame. With a 340 from my 68 barracuda. Eventually extended the bed to 12' made it a dump truck & added a tuck-away lift gate, winch & ramps so it could carry cars too
. Added A/C & electric pass. window & door lock
. Still have it. Even added a Gear-vendors over drive- 4.56 rear gears.
I am glad you made a repair video this week. I was afraid that the dumpster fire Auction BMW was going to be it for this week.
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic again and as always (video and work)! You, Sir, are a really cool guy! Funny and sarcastic/ironic too. Additionally older than I thought, but that's definitely not obvious! You are decent, you have a ton of knowledge and a really, really great work ethic. All in all you are a pretty rare breed nowadays. After watching tons of car themed videos, I would never buy a car in North America. But I would definitely nevertheless buy a vehicle from you.

It’s unlikely I would ever attempt anything close to the work your showing, however there’s a bunch o little jobs I’m not afraid of attempting because I have good examples of how to remove some of the fasteners, sensors, clips, grommets and other things that cars today use. Also I am much better equipped to look at used vehicles, and have a better idea of what to look for. Great channel.
My past few trucks have been new gmc’s and the north east salt kills them.

I have really enjoyed this build. Ahhhh GM, where somehow the plastic Christmas tree becomes structural. I love this series. This era was truly the last gasp of the real GM.

Definitely a lot of parts to take off when doing a color change PROPERLY. I've seen color changes done not properly and it really devalues the vehicle. The way you are doing it, there won't be any trace of red left. But you do everything properly, so it's no surprise that you are going to the trouble of changing the color properly also. Interesting to see what color it will be, but I'm thinking possibly white?

You did say an Arkansas truck so a good working AC system is a must. :) Since it is not going to be red I think white would be a good color or my guess. I figured the reason the Roaming gnome had to be the one to walk through the cab was because you hurt your knees when you jumped off the bed. :)
Curious why you wouldn't paint it red - then you wouldn't have to strip everything, right? Or would that result in an inferior product with matching the paint exactly in places where new and old would meet, like the door jambs and firewall? Or did you just not want it red?
Scott mentioned in previous episode he isnt a fan of resale red. especially on a rebuilt truck, to many people it just screams resale/lazy

I was glad to see you take those stupid chrome strips off the fenders. Also if I were you while you have it tore down go ahead and replace the oil pressure sensor on the back of the motor. It’s a lot fun when it’s all put together.
