First performed in 1697, William Congreve's play The Mourning Bride includes as its first line, “Music has Charms to soothe the savage Breast / to soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak" Implying that the rhythm and sounds in music can calm even one with a violent, aggressive nature.
