  • This week we're looking at the 2020 Rossignol Black Ops 98! Rossignol doesn't release much information on this all-mountain twin tip, which made us feel a little bit like Sherlock Holmes.

    As always, a great review. As a "Rossi guy" I was immediately drawn to learn more about his ski. And great comparison and closing comments - all skiers pray at the Alta 😊

    How does those skis perform on icy groomed runs ? I'm from Lake Louise Canada and it gets pretty icy out there so i was just wondering or i should look at another kind of ski..?, i love to carve but a bit apprehensive to do it on hard pack, mind you my skis are 20 years old and obviously looking to upgrade lol, thanks .

    I currently still use the 2012 S3's looking for a new set, still like hitting park but an all-mountain skier. I love how super flexible and "bouncy" my S3's are. curious how these would compare, also looking at the Sky 7's but those seem a little more stiff and an all mountain ski

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому

      These are still flexible and still have some bounce to them, although they are a lot more damp and quiet than your S3. Much better at speed, while still maintaining the fun factor too. If you're going into the park, the Black Ops 98 (it's now the Holyshred for 2021) is going to be the better choice compared to the Sky 7, that's for sure.

    I really like the sounds of this ski. Could you name a few other similar options I should compare it to?

      Nordica Enforcer 104 is a little wider, but similar. The new Dynastar Menace 98 is quite similar too. You'd probably like the Armada ARV 96 and Nordica Soul Rider 97 too, although those two skis aren't quite as stable as the Black Ops 98. Have you watched our twin tip comparison?

    Awesome review! What do you guys think of the BO 98 as a daily east coast ski? I’m 6’1” 225lbs intermediate skier who skies mostly groomers in NH but like to go off piste here and there. Won’t be hitting the park much but do like the twin tips for messing around on smaller stuff. Also, what is the recommended mount point for my level and activity? Thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому +1

      I think it's a great choice. It's certainly appropriate on groomers. That might not be its focus, but there's plenty of edge grip and it's a smooth, stable feel. It's also very versatile, and wide enough to function as a powder ski for most east coast pow days. And, when you want to, you can dabble in some freestyle/jibby tricks. Big fan of the Black Ops 98.

    Hey Jeff, what length did you guys test? I skied the 182 last season and loved it, but I'm torn as to whether or not to get the 192. 6'2", 200 lbs, very aggressive skier in Vermont with 4 or 5 pairs of 180's in my quiver. Do you think the lack of taper and low rise will make this ski too cumbersome in 192 here on the east?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому

      Hey Aryn! I skied the 182 cm and was very happy with that length. I'm smaller than you (5'10" 150-160 lbs depending on the day), but I often like skiing longer lengths. In my opinion, 192 would be a bit much for the east. I've made the mistake of going that long with other skis. I don't have any trouble maneuvering them, but they legitimately don't fit in certain tight tree lines I like to ski and make me ski down the fall line a bit more than I'd like to. The Black Ops 98 also feels super solid on your feet, so I wouldn't really worry too much about a 182 feeling unstable at your size. 182 cm feels like the right choice to me, unless you're specifically planning on skiing really fast on them.

    Is this meant to replace the 7 series (e.g Soul 7) or is it intended as a different range to appeal, as you say, to ex-Park riders?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому +1

      Nope, not replacing the 7 Series. Different range of skiers. Ex-park skiers for sure, but it's also more stable and more powerful overall than a ski like the Soul 7. More of a hard-charging ski.

    Would this ski work well for someone who is an athletic, intermediate skier who spends most of my time on the groomers but hopes to learn basic park skills in the coming seasons?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, definitely. It's a very versatile ski. Good on groomers and good in a little powder too. They're perfectly appropriate for learning basic park skills, and an athletic intermediate will have no problem on them.

    Really great review! I am really considering buying the 182 cm version of these. I am only 174 cm (5'8.5"), 66 kg (145 lbs) but with quite a lot of experience (a season as a (ski) travel guide), would it still be okay, or too long, in your opinion?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому

      Hmm... I'm kind of on the fence about that one. I think you'll be fine on the 182 cm, but I also wonder if the 172 cm would be more appropriate. The Black Ops 98 is a stable, smooth, damp ski, so not really one that you need to size up on. I would at least consider the 172 cm, unless you particularly like long skis.

    • @JJ2020
      @JJ2020 4 роки тому +1

      @@SkiEssentials Thanks for the advice! I had to go with the 182 cm version as the 172 is not available in Denmark. Now I just hope it is not too long, crossing my fingers I'll like it!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому

      @@JJ2020 I think you'll be fine. I'm realistically not much heavier than you (5-10 pounds), and only have 2-3 inches on you, and I really like skiing the 182 cm length.

    How does this compare to the Nordica soul rider 97 in terms of all-mountain performance

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому

      It's heavier and more stable at speed. The Black Ops 98 is really very smooth through just about any snow condition at any speed. The Soul Rider feels quicker as it's a little lighter, and more energetic, but doesn't quite have the stability or vibration damping as the Black Ops.

    Have you guys ever thought of reviewing ON3P skis?

    • @SkiEssentials

      We'd be psyched to review some ON3P skis! We didn't have time this past winter, and we're not currently a dealer, but we'll try to work in some testing and reviews this coming ski season.

    Any chance you could compare this ski to the Black Crows Camox?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому +1

      Similar idea, but the Camox feels lighter and softer flexing. Not quite as powerful or as stable as the Black Ops, but a nice choice if the Black Ops sounds too heavy.

      Skiessentials.com thanks!! secondly, how does this ski compare to the Armada Arv 96 Ti?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому

      @@alexevans9909 That one feels pretty similar to the Black Ops. Similar stability and vibration damping. I think the Black Ops feels a little more maneuverable, especially in off-piste terrain and conditions, but overall pretty similar.

    • @SkiEssentials

    How does this ski compare to the Kore 99?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому

      Kore 99 is directional, not a twin tip. The Black Ops 98 also feels a lot damper than the Kore. The Kore is very stiff and responsive, while the Black Ops is a little smoother.

  • @ESW206
    @ESW206 5 років тому +1

    How is this against the exp 88?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому

      Experience 88 is narrower and directional. This has a much more centered mount point. It's also heavier and more stable at speed, but also more demanding to ski. The Experience 88 has easier turn initiation and it's less fatiguing in probably every application. Experience 94 is a closer comparison, in my opinion, as that ski is stiffer and a little heavier than the 88.

    how does this ski compare to the k2 poacher?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому +1

      Pretty similar actually! The Poacher is more symmetrical, although neither is perfectly symmetrical. I find the Black Ops feels more powerful overall, perhaps more well-rounded as a true all-mountain ski. Poacher has the edge in terms of terrain park performance. Both are super playful and a lot of fun to ski.
