- Yuh-Jung Youn reacts to winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Soon-ja in ‘Minari.’ With this win, the actress made Oscar history by becoming the first Korean and the second Asian person to take home an Oscar in the category. Youn also shared her thoughts on Brad Pitt, who presented her with the award. The 93rd Academy Awards aired Sunday on ABC.

This woman won almost 40 awards just for this role. Very deserving.
"Even rainbow has seven colours..." I love her so much. Plus, her comment on how she does not believe in competition brought tears to my eyes. Yes, everyone is a winner in each film. Love her character and humbleness :D

You, the US journalists give her real questions please. That's what the important of having open minded personality. One can tell what a great actress Youn Yuh-Jung is by the composure she maintained and not showing a hint of the disdain she must have felt by being asked such a ridiculous question regarding the scent of another person.

Youn Yuh-Jung is a legend and all the journalists had a rare opportunity to ask her about her craft, about telling the story of Minari, her experiences as a South Korean actress on the international stage, and so much more. it's literally a historic moment and so many chose to remove that focus from her and ask about Brad Pitt? disgusting.

She must have been so frustrated with the intellectual level of these entertainment journalists! Her answers were politely witty. She may not be fluent in English or super-articulate, but that doesn't mean she is not intwllectual and smart. These Korean artists, be them singers, actors, comedians, dancers, mostly obtain formal education in art, besides being talented. So, just give proper and appropriate queations for them to answer. The questions weren't Oscar level to Madam Youn. For the kid, Alan Kim, maybe appropriate. You wouldn't ask these questions to Glen Close, Meryl Streep, Diane Kwaton or Maggie Snith.. and Madam Youn is as established as these actresses.
I cringed at the 3rd question. The journalist wasn't ready and fumbled his question. Madam Youn replied beautifully.

She didn't understand the Blacktree interviewer's question. His question was how does she feel about storytelling that showcases the diversity within the Asian community. He could have worded it a little better but that's what he meant.

@@soolee2763 I guess. I'm Black. I've heard those points made many times before so 🙄 (sigh) I've grown tired of it. That is in no way shade to her. Her interviews for the Oscars have been the most grounded and humorous. I love her perspective about the award.
I kind of got that but seeing it from her perspective, I can easily see many meanings. Asian movies that are popularized in Hollywood are often martial arts movies- but asian movies in general are of every possible genre and always have been- so to tell a lifelong asian actor that non martial arts movies are just coming out now would be confusing to someone who knows that’s not true. She also says she doesn’t like branding everyone by race or gender, and she may be growing tired of being called “asian actor” when she could just be called an actor but his question unintentionally had her represent a whole race (which is diverse on its own) and she politely declines by saying every story is important and all colours should work together.
But ya, this was one of the better questions and her points were important, but I don’t believe it was the answer he was hoping for.
