Great vid as usual, just to say.... there’s a handful of UA-cam vids of people doing this, mostly German, have to say yours is the best to date for detail . My T4 is the later model to yours, different heater controls, so I’ll be watching out for your next upload to see how you get on. Thanks for filming and explaining, love it 👍
Cheers captain, I almost didn’t post this one as I didn’t really feel there was much good content in it but if there’s just one little element of a detail that’s helpful to someone then it’s worth it. Hopefully the switches trim plate won’t end up looking like a dogs dinner. 🙄
Love the videos, great job with the stereo. I’ve recently done the same but ended up replacing the backing plate & using golf mk4 heater controls. Was a pain but worth it in the end!
Was your layout exactly the same? I’ve seen all sorts of different layouts of original dash boards and this has to be the most awkward looking one to work with. Thanks for the heads up on the mk4 controls. 👍
Hi Captain, very nice of you to ask. Been a bit of a nightmare to be honest, I’ve been learning to spray paint the last 2 weeks and it’s been very very frustrating. I’ve got some footage but I haven’t posted anything as I don’t want to post rubbish content. What I’ll do is put some thing together once I get the hang of it. Good news is some parts for the dashboard have come today so at least I should be able to get that finally put back together again this weekend and get a vid out. 👍
@@pdubs7831 great stuff. My brother and me spent 10 weekends prepping and spraying my T4 caravelle earlier this year, nightmare with limited space, doors off and windscreen out, bonnet and bumpers in the dinning room lol it’s turned out well though. I’m sure you are watching loads of vids for tips and it will turn out well, thanks for replying 👍
I think there’s a couple of options with doing this, also I’ve seen a variety of different oem dashboards to begin with so there’s definitely hard dash’s and easier dash’s to begin with I think I’ve got a difficult one. Is yours the same as mine?
@@pdubs7831 Yes it is with the same heater control that doesn't have the pocket above. I only just bought the van and I'm awaiting delivery as it won't start and has no MOT so quite a few other jobs to-do before I get to the dash !
@@simonbateman4283 I love hearing about other people’s vans and there plans with them, maybe because it distracts me away from what’s left to do on mine.
Useful vid mate, ive been pondering the dash ideas for my t4 since I got it. Mostly thinking il copy the oak topped dash with the iPad recess from the lowdown transporters van but a double din would be useful...🤔
The model I fitted, the main body of the radio fits in the same place as the original (single din half in the top) and the bottom half is only about 25 mm deep so is well clear of the steering brace. Check out the follow up video where I get it all done and dusted
Mate, I’ve had a nightmare the last two weeks learning to spray paint with the compressor😩😩😩😩, footage I have is poor so I’ll have to start again with it. Good news is that yesterday I did a tonne of work to the dash and I’ve literally just done the editing (01:45) got some finishing touches to do with the heater controls, get the radio connected to the badge then the update can go out tomorrow evening. Trouble is even with loads of editing to shorten it as much as possible it’s gonna be about 37 minutes long, but without it all those that want to try this for themselves won’t have all the info on what it took to achieve (I’ve changed the whole dashboard carcass to the later model and adapted it to take some earlier model parts!!!) channels growing nicely 😁
@@pdubs7831 sounds like you’ve been busy/frustrated 😂 it’s a shame I don’t have your number - I could tell you all about the headaches I’m having with the wiring in my 67 year old beetle which would make you feel better! Looking forward to the next update 👍🏻
@@pdubs7831 actually I’m not! Should be though. I’ll get myself registered on there. Was just about to do an oil change and power steering belt switch on my t4 and now it’s pissing it down !

Hi Captain, update is out, should be more relevant to you with your later model dash.

Well done, I have been researching doing the same to my t4 !

Watch this space Emma, I’ve ordered some replacement dash parts to hopefully make this a better result. Thanks for watching 👍
Alot more work involved than the later dash design
Tell me about it, I’ve ordered some dash parts to hopefully get it put back together better.

Your partner must have the patience of a saint! When will this van be on the road?!
Think she’s starting to lose it though, as the builder says in Tom Hanks the money pit,
“2 weeks” 👍🔨🛠🪚
I am considering doing this but what did you do with the steering brace behind the radio? Guess in the slight din 1.5 ISH size fitted above it?
