The microwave oven is a good faraday cage but it means leaving your keys in the kitchen and you have the risk of cooking then. Wrapping the keys/pouch in silver foil would work too.
I use this exact same pouch. I walk up to my car with the key fob in it. Sometimes it , Sometimes it works Sometimes doesn't. Won't stop the signal to my trunk though.
I just bought the same one you used for the video. At first I thought it didn't work until I realized, as you mentioned, that the key goes inside the silver lined compartment. Works brilliantly. One question: since you have to take the key out to open and start your vehicle (or to close it), does that provide a nearby thief enough opportunity to scan your key, and steal your car?
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad it works for you. In my experience most of these thefts result from the amplification of the weak short range signal that your key always transmits. This is why this kind of theft happens so often outside your house at night. Your key is stationary, maybe sitting on a dining table, and the thief has all night to try and pick up the signal and amplify it. Much harder to do if you're with your vehicle or moving around, or far away from your vehicle. Most often done as a two man team. One working their way around your house trying to pick up and amplify the signal, the other next to the car with a device to pick the signal up. Keep it in the pouch when not in use (and any spares) and hopefully you will reduce your risk of theft. Hope that helps.
A useful video, I've done my own research recently on finding my new (ish) car has keyless entry and it was interesting to find that some pouches are Sold Secure listed. I've opted for a Solon security Defender mini, inexpensive but effective. The material may wear in time so it will pay to check its effectiveness periodically.
It’s probably quite a short range. A couple of metres maybe? Not sure. Problem is a device can be pressed against your window to capture and amplify the weak signal, and relay it to someone near the car.
I have a normal car key which opens and closes the door via remote control. But to start the engine I have to insert and start. So my question is do I need faraday pouch for my normal key?
These type of pouches are to protect key fobs that are always transmitting so you can unlock the car/start the engine with a button press. I’d say in your case a pouch isn’t needed as the car is immobilised without the key?
Bought my car on Saturday and it was stolen Sunday. My last car was 22 years old. No fob, of course. Good ol’ old-fashioned keys. The dealer didn’t give me a lesson and I wasn’t through the manual yet!! Used the fob to lock the car at Walgreens. Do you put the key back inside of the pouch when the car is started and you're ready to take off or do you leave it out of the pouch until you get out and walk away?
I only use this at home. So the key goes straight into the pouch when I get inside the house. For me I’m trying to stop someone standing outside and trying to amplify the weak signal from my key, to unlock and start the car on my drive. You can of course take it with you and store your key in it when out shopping or at work if you wish.
