You are one of the first to mention council tax which is helpful for comparisons for Americans. The only thing I found more expensive was eating at restaurants, and that's probably because I was in Edinburgh and it's a tourist city. 900 pounds a month for a 2 bed flat is crazy, that would cost at least the equivalent of 1500 pounds here. loved this video. I am coming to back to edinburgh soon, so even though i am from the city I have been away for 22 years this has helped me to have a rough budget. Is the Stockbridge area high for council tax?
Stockbridge is likely to be one of the higher rent + council tax areas - I tend to expect lower EH postcodes to have higher council tax and Stockbridge seems to be mostly EH3! But if it's still affordabe for you it's probably worth it, such a great area!
Hi! Super great info! Thank you! I’m planning on moving to Edinburgh, but I have NO idea about food or bad neighborhoods. I’m 41 and single... any advice on good neighborhoods for a single gal who’s a hairdresser? Walk in distance to the best salons in town?
I think Meadowbank/Easter rd and Newington might be some of the best areas to explore for affordable but close-to-centre living! And of course Leith, but Leith is a huge area (it used to be its own town!) so it's hard to generalise. All mentioned places can have a bit of an edge (I live in one of them!), but Edinburgh is still an extremely safe city!

Amazing! I know its worlds apart but dental care was a real shock. You need private healthcare to get dental coverage here. Regarding citizenship status, healthcare enrollment etc?
I did one about my moving to Edinburgh story, which kinda touches on all these topics, but I think the issue with it is that now, almost ten years later and with Brexit looming, the situation is pretty different and some of the advice is just not accurate anymore. So I think that if I was to make another one about tips for moving I'd wait to see how things turn out! Right now we're mostly in the dark (e.g. I got my Settled Status, an 'official thumbs up' for people who've been around for over 5 years, but the document literally said that it's pretty worthless when talking to officials, so... no idea .D)

Hi Belesariius, we work from home and so consider a chunk of our rent and other bills to be a business expense, and with working from home comes increased usage of electricity, gas, internet bills etc. I'm afraid most mortgages expect 10-20% deposit, so with housing prices ranging from 150-500,000 pounds in the sunny capital, we'd be saving for a number of years before a mortgage would ever be possible. I can assure you that people can and do live wildly more extravagant lives in Edinburgh than us, and while we could penny pinch every purchase and shop around - driving from Tesco to Morrisons to Lidl for the best prices, we could spend that time at home working or trying to be helpful with the next video instead.
@@simonmountney aye all of the above is true- i live in the old town ( you are east side of new town ish ? ) and its just as bad / good but I think slightly cheaper - but horrifyingly I think landlords see us as a independant capital city and therefore we are creaping up to london prices - joy . all the best to you both
@@belesariius Absolutely nothing about, "I think landlords see us as a independant capital city and therefore we are creaping up to london prices" in the slightest and all about supply and demand. Edinburgh is a small but desirable city with people earning decent wages. The lowest priced 2 BR flat in the city centre is about £200,000 so, as a landlord buying that to rent, you'd want to make a minimum 4% return. Add on the other costs associated with owning and managing a property and if you rent it out at £1,000 a month you're not actually making that much money. BTW Edinburgh rents are nowhere as high as in London or around the South East but have traditionally been the highest in Scotland - many decades before Independence even became a possibility.
Hi, It's really a good informative video. Can you please do a video about, how to get a work permit in Scotland for an Indian and what are it's procedures. Can you Please provide the information.
Am I blind or is there no video about weather and climate? Long summer days and long winter nights. My wife's biggest concern right now :D Is there a chance for one? Also any chance to ask any of your friends with kids how much is kindergarten, school etc.

Oh this video is fresh af. I'm researching for an August 2020 Scotland visit and I find your video informative and your accent clear. When you say coach, I'm understanding flying coach on an airplane or more absurdly horse drawn carriage. That's what "coach" means to me
This was a really great and interesting video. Oddly enough before I tuned in, I was just researching prices for back bacon online here in the States. Sadly very expensive to get here. Furnished homes and flats here are very rare. I have to ask where did you get that adorable octopus on the bed?
The octopus is from a brand called Jellycat! They do squids now too! .D (in Edinburgh one can get them at Paper Tiger if that's a helpful piece of info)
Should be fine, I have friends who are at that salary level (creatives in ad agencies etc) and it seems like a good income especially if you're co-habiting with someone else, flatmates, partner? Always depends on your lifestyle of course but it sounds good to me!
I’m planning an update video because the costs have really grown over the past couple years! But a tldr version for groceries would be “cheap food is now noticeably more expensive, more expensive food pretty much the same”, rent fairly similar but utilities up 50%, used cars more expensive too
@@Kakibot oh no, I got excited too early then. Moving to Edinburg in a couple of months this was really helpful and calmed in the sense of what to expect. Thanks again for the reply.

I always buy a local SIM card when I'm travelling, while in Scotland I paid 15 pounds for a month on EE while my Canadian carrier would charge $15 per DAY for overseas roaming.
edit 2 - haha I must have stayed near you, that's the Sainsburys we frequented!
The pricing for rent and such has changed considerably in the past 2 or 3 years - I've actually made an updated video year or so ago, so if you're curious about where the cost of living has grown, I recommend giving it a watch! .)

I noticed that despite feeling like fresh produce is really pricy over here in UK, North America was taking this to a whole new level! That was US though, maybe Canada is doing a bit better? 😅
loved this video.
Such a great video! I lived in Edinburgh for a year and am moving back permanently in a few months 😄
That's awesome! Where are you moving from? .)
Kakibot Canada 🇨🇦😀
Thank you very much for all this useful information which helped me to compare with France. I planned to move to Edinburgh. I just subscribed toir channel
Hello! My name is Kate. I'm really fascinated by your channel and I decided to go to Scotland! I want to explore Jacobite steam train from Edinburgh but I have founds tours only from Glasgow. Maybe you know how to get there from Edinburgh or you can recommend how to get to Glasgow by the cheapest way and recommend other fascinating attractions in Scotland.
Omg you are so cute 💕💕💕 i have just discovered your channel. In 2 years i will be in scotland, work there. (I’m an MD) i think this channel will help me 🌸🌸
awwwww what a lovely cat NOT! :) it's a little domestic lion haha.. ok so i'm gonna travel to Edinburgh on the 18th of October, ... I learnt a couple of new things when you made "the 20 things to on the royal mile" what caught my attention was The free museums and Cranachan & Crowdie... i saw they have haggis chips?
Haggis chips are pretty omnipresent in Edinburgh stores so you shouldn't find it too challenging to track them down! (AND THEY ARE GOOOD) But deffo pop into Cranachan & Crowdie, they often have nice little gin sample tastings >.>
Music should not be overlapping your video.
hope you can add the logo of the companies (eg. phone company)you mentioned if possible as outsiders will not get it by just hearing it once. thanks
This was so interesting. 👍🏼 Now I just have to convince Scotland to let me live there. 🙂
Everyone is welcome.
Mr Shanchat ❤️❤️❤️❤️🏴
@@shanchat You won't feel like that in a few years time when you become a minority group in your own country. At the last census in 2011, only 48% of London's population identified as 'white British'.
No bgm please. Love you content❤
Certainly cheaper than Western Australia.
How much would one of those apartments cost to buy, roughly guessing?
Amazing! I know its worlds apart but dental care was a real shock. You need private healthcare to get dental coverage here. Without it a simple clean up would be around $60 USD and could go up to $500 USD for repairs.
Do you have a video on how the moving in process was for you? Regarding citizenship status, healthcare enrollment etc?
I did one about my moving to Edinburgh story, which kinda touches on all these topics, but I think the issue with it is that now, almost ten years later and with Brexit looming, the situation is pretty different and some of the advice is just not accurate anymore. So I think that if I was to make another one about tips for moving I'd wait to see how things turn out! Right now we're mostly in the dark (e.g. I got my Settled Status, an 'official thumbs up' for people who've been around for over 5 years, but the document literally said that it's pretty worthless when talking to officials, so... no idea .D)
@@Kakibot I will check it out eitherway, Thank you! I always imagined living in Germany because of the strong science opportunities available (I'm genetic engineer), but I fell in love with Scotland, plus I already know english pretty well (my German is still quite bad). Part of my trip will be dedicated to inform myself on how pronounced the science industry is there, especially biotech.
Have a pleasant night!
Ps. I hope Brexit doesn't affect you in any way.
I was interested in the grand total. Can't be bothered to add that up :D
Which area?
I did it, it would come around 1000 per month approximately
Have you been to anywhere in the U.K. except London obviously?
Actually watched this multiple times to refresh my memory on general things there, cause I will be moving to Edinburgh soon 😂 love your videos a lot. Did you end up doing an airport related video? 👀
How can we find out what gym you are mentioning ??
Have a look on Google for budget gyms in edinburgh, depending on where you live it'll dictate which one you want to go for. There's Pure Gym, The Gym, Xercise 4 Less, Edinburgh Leisure, shop around and see what you like as most offer day passes
Most people use edinburgh leisure or pure gym
I 100% agree on the music comment below. Very distracting. Your voice and it were competing for my attention the entire time. I enjoyed your great information though. Thank you.
Yep this is how you would live in Edinburgh the expensive way. and paying 900 per month when you could get a mortgage is beyond.
Better in Prague where the Czech mafia controls the taxis and rip off tourists or rob them or harm them?
Hi,
It's really a good informative video.
From the age of 3 kids get 15 hours per week free kindergarten(nursery) with the hours rising to 30 hours per week free from next year
It was a shock to me how much would the long dark winter and light summers affect me - it's definitely noticeable and surprising! I might do a little video about seasons and best times to visit Scotland in the future!
UA-cam needed this video .)
But now I’m missing Sainsbury’s. And you
Forget Sainsbury's, shop at Iceland, better prices and choice.

linnine hope you enjoyed it. Would love to travel to the Scandinavian countries but the beer prices put me off, hehe.
I still have my ScothIrish brogue!
Peace Out!
Airport video would be nice.
When speaking of travelling to London, she said it's 20 pounds to take the coach to London. What does she mean coach?
Oh this video is fresh af. I'm researching for an August 2020 Scotland visit and I find your video informative and your accent clear. When you say coach, I'm understanding flying coach on an airplane or more absurdly horse drawn carriage. That's what "coach" means to me
@@almoistthere Hi Mr Riddle, glad to see you're embracing your Muggle heritage. The coach is the name for the larger long distance transit buses.
Ah yes. Thank you. That makes more sense to me. I appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work
When was this made?
Pretty much precisely 2 years ago!
Great information. The background music is almost annoying, - it makes the video very hectic and its hard to concentrate on the important stuff.
Great info dear !
Good video. Background music is too loud
Music is too loud !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woah! Your rent is my 7,000 Miles round trip ticket to and fro GLA
Oh no please don't make me think about where I could be going if I didn't have to pay any rent .D
Kakibot Thank you so much! You’re the best in sharing your websites for stuff. There’s a blue octopus on its way to me now. 👍🏻
Shocking to know 1 kg basmati costs more in india than in scotland 14:07
Mmmm, 20 minutes from the centre... do you live in Holyrood? :)

Should be fine, I have friends who are at that salary level (creatives in ad agencies etc) and it seems like a good income especially if you're co-habiting with someone else, flatmates, partner? Always depends on your lifestyle of course but it sounds good to me!

Thanks a lot, just how much the prices would’ve changed in 2 years
I’m planning an update video because the costs have really grown over the past couple years!
Please dont put music on top when you are talking. If you do put very very low in the background. If you watch the video in high speed it is very tyring.
I'm guessing you also speedwalk through galleries? Kat puts a lot of time into editing these videos to be played back at 1x speed. We've had a lot of comments on the sound and we're learning as we go, fair enough, but we're not going to go out of our way to accommodate how well the sound plays at different speeds as well, just so people can skip through it.
@@simonmountney Dear Simon, i don't now if you are affiliated with the channel in any way, but you are missing the point and also being rood along the way. My comment is meant to be constructive and helpful. UA-cam videos are made to be watched however the person who is giving minutes of his life to see what you created wants. Each video is literary one among hundred of billions of videos until now. If someone watches them as entertainment he could watch it at the pace you made them. If you have information in them he/she is interested in he will try to find and understand the information you are giving. Time is a valuable resource. If you make very long videos you will lose people that don't have the time to watch them or are lost in the rhythm you are keeping. The sorter and more condense a video is it is more easy to watch an you get more engagement with the audience. Informational video of any kind are not "recreational", meaning that you are trying to help other people so being to the point with a pinch of humour and personal style will be the perfect mix. As for the music as you said everybody learns but you can understand a lot more about your video when you play it at high speed. If it sounds good playing x2 or x3 then it will be enjoyable to watch x1 speed. Music is another layer of interaction. You are talking to the viewer both as a person and with your music. Choose one to talk each time you are communicating something either wise it is as someone is trying to follow a discussion in a club. Not very easy. Hope you get it now. Have fun "live long and prosper"... yea it a star trek quote but somehow it seemed fitting. :)
Music is WAY TOO distracting.
