When you really think about it, Akio didn't really have much to lose compared to the other characters. He was just a simple high school student, with a few friends. He had no responsibilities except for his old Z31. He got hooked on the Devil Z, and just gave up everything for it. He didn't regret anything, nor did he look back. Hiramoto on the other hand, had a wife carrying his soon to be child. He had promises and a dream. He was saving all the money he could. Yet his past racing just couldn't let him forget about that life. Then he heard about the Devil Z and eventually met Kitami which just made it even worse. He told his wife about his plan to buy a car, she just left him. Leaving him with nothing but only his "dragon" the R32 he bought. In the end the pain was too much to bear and he just realized that this isn't the life for him. He gave up right at the end. While Akio just keeps on driving by with nothing to lose and no regrets.
Tbh that would also happen to me if i'd get a chance to buy my own car,and that if street racing was legal in my area...
@@sta5011 Street racing has never been legal. Maybe "tolerated" in some countries but never publicly accepted by authorities. The only legal racing for mortals like us that I've known has been done in your *local* circuit (If your city does have one).

If you see the pictures of the people who did this irl at the time they were reaching up to almost 330-340 km/h tops with people averaging between 280-300 km/h. Check out the ABR hosoki s130, thing reached 341 kmh in ‘96 lolz. Check Auto Team Retro. Do your research before making such statements
A modified car vs a bone stock car? neither of these cars in bone stock form could really hit 320, at most the Porsche was the fastest in stock form along the Ferrari, supra and other JDMs were restricted to 250kph and 280hp (although they often packed 30-50hp more than advertised)
For those who complain about weak character development, don't you see? The real characters are the cars, especially Z.
Devil Z has a back story
Devil Z came from near death( escaped from crushing saved by Akio)
Its engine overhauled
Its body and chassis reinforced
And finally got a wet clutch and became a perfect machine for speed.
A year later , it receive a new pair of turbos which made it even faster :D
Also this anime focuses more on the side characters and the consequnces of their racing obsession.
@@hybridAbsol and however long after that it even got a lighter body and a 40mm front diffuser for better ground clearance (I don't remember clearly if that's exactly how it was described but you know what I mean)
@acktually aintaddingup it is more about the philosophy of street racing....most of the characters have life obligations/obstacles that hold them back....only Devil Z and its driver show no hesitation...a pure street racer...at this point it is not about the cars, but how much of your life do you want to put on the line for street racing...
It is in the mods of the Z that I find it interesting that a Stock Testa (rated at 390 factory HP) can run alongside a 600HP 240Z.
Not only is the Testa already out powered, it gets even worse.
The Fairlady Z (In case you don't know, in Japan the Z was referred to by Fairlady and then its model code, the S30, S130 etc, or just S30Z/S130Z etc.. Hence you (probably) never hear the characters in the anime say 240Z, if there is, it might be a translation thing. The global/US names are the 240Z and 260Z etc.) was sold weighing between 975 to 1205 kg (Weight are Wikipedia numbers, take it with a grain of salt). Lets just assume Akio's Z is weighing in at 975kg due to it being a 'racecar'. Whereas the Testa is weighing it at 1500kg! This gives the Testa a HP/KG ratio of 390/1500= 0.26, the Z on the other hand: 600/975= 0.62. Roughly triple the Testa's!
Note: This analysis is obviously not factoring in fuel load (the Testa carries a whopping 115L of fuel when filled to the brim!), wind resistance/aerodynamic properties of the body, tire width/rolling resistance, drivetrain losses, weight of passengers etc.!
This was my essay about the "errors" in this race against the Testa. But don't get me wrong! I really, really like this show! There are no other racing anime out there (Initial D aside) that captivates me and the illegal street racing scene as much as these 2!

And tuning too, but it was not shown that much about it in Initial D.
@@gabrielmartines3510 true , theres not much to see in Initial D , they just make sure the engine is running thats all , while in WM , the cars needs major repairs after going flat out many times

The Z31 is the real hero in this story. The one no one saw coming, that punched way out of its weight class. And honestly a z31 can do 500hp all day long. Without changing the internals.

Yep. They at underdogs. I’m running a 100 wet shot of nitrous on top of some under mods. I should be around 350-400hp. I can put a car length on a new 5.0 mustang. So it should be running low 12a

When you up the boost it will start to slip. I put a center force clutch kit in mine and it works fantastic.
I drive a 996.2 GT3 and am frequently on the Wangan, but I can assure you there are Wangan attackers in R33s, R34s who do 320kph. While there is no real Devil Z or Z31, there are real people and cars who these characters are based on.
Balls of steel, cars built to do that. Piston sufaces diagonally cut, 2.0 full boost from Kasai to Daikoku. Frickin' maniacs, with little to lose.
Modern cars can do that, but are driven by computers, so... it's clearly more impressive if you could do it with cars from the early 90s.
Ishida's reverse entry drift is 10/10

Hiramoto's BNR32 is my 2nd favourite Skyline GTR after the Calsonic Grp A R32 , its only 480hp and its capable reaching 200mph with ease

The girl that drive the Z is first owner's sister and she wanted to end this car life so it couldn't kill anybody else by dropping it into Tokyo Bay.

Just keep it that way , you can still get more out of it even without a turbo kit
Being the fastest Wangan driver could almost be impossible. Not only because you're driving at 320 or 330km/h, there are such speed like 350 km/h 400 or even more to be able to bare with those speeds while there are traffics and curve-corners all over the places. Thank god that Maximum Tune doesn't allow us to exceed more than 340 km/h, which would make our reactions a lot more harder and impossible to bare with.
You reach a certain speed when your mind and body will no longer allow you to go any faster on a public road. For some average people that speed is only 160km/h, but very few can push it to 340km/h. There are so many gradual dips on public roads that you don not notice at the speed limit, but they become quite violent at high speed.
The invisibile speed barrier in your mind is the barrier that shall not be broken under any circumstances

That's like asking why some people enjoy watching Curling. I don't find it the least bit interesting, but each person has their own set of interests, and I think that's great! I personally enjoy Wangan Midnight because I am also a speed freak, and I like fast cars. I also find that a lot of the car tuning and driving techniques found in Wangan Midnight and Initial D are very accurate!
Dak Leonardo A lot of Wangan Midnight is about performance while Initial D is about technique
Also he voiced Engine Speedor in Go-Onger, who was a sentient sports car that can transform into a mecha.
Many of the voice actors in Wangan Midnight are from Initial D.

17:14 OMg every time I see that guy driving the sliver GTR, I am so sad and uncomfortable. The feeling is like you are using domino to build a pyramid for several weeks and destroy just less than a minute. Why do we need to abandon our dream that we have tried so hard to achieve by just a single reason? I personally change my life priority to my dream after watching this scene. I told my father and my girlfriend, and they all got pissed after that. I think I just need to move to a place that far away from them....

This series needed a Corvette Z06. To clarify, the C6 Z06, the big hulking 7 liter V8 Z06.
What it really needed was a Mitsubishi VR4; it has the most potential for Wangan loop racing.
