I recently purchased this recorder for my personal use but surprised typical SD cards not adequate. Looking at what BMD recommends, ouch those prices... I noticed you use a lower cost SD card. Instead of spending $150 a card, I went to Best Buy, purchased a SanDisk SDXC UHS-I 128GB card for $28. It works fine recording 1080p60 (I usually do 720p). Though I need to verify the total record time, I like the chart you made showing record times per different capacity cards.
As a BlackMagic user and a ATEM owner, Video Assist owner, and UltraStudio Mini Recorder owner, I still can't fathom why they don't give us an option between Apple ProRes LT and ProRes proxy. It's crazy. Give us an H.264 option across capture devices and so many of us would be so happy when we're capturing and don't want/need ProRes LT. How is this not a feature after all these years?
@@danielpellow4045 specifically for thr Hyper or across its capture platform in general? Didn't see thing on a quick Google search in was notified of any firmware updates for my black magic video assist. I would love that though
Josh Hayes specifically for the studio mini, check out the hyperdeck utility 6.0 update on the BM site. It’s the main reason I’m considering to buy this thing, so if you get it to work let me know if it works well!
After quite a bit of discussion on the forums about how you can't get a computer to read the Atem as a BM capture device in Desktop Video/Media Express, and since apparently my old Ultra Studio mini recorder isn't working, and my Black Magic Video Assist also isn't allowed by Desktop Video/Media Express to be a capture device either, I got a little Black Magic fatigue and I'm just going with one of those gaming capture devices for the HDMI record I want (I can always get a hi-res feed direct to Video Assist from the switcher it's just that Black Magic restricts us from being able to do it through computers). I'm getting the AGPtEK HD Game Capture Video Capture 1080P. Has added benefit that it has an HDMI passthrough as well :) So I'll run conference slides into that and capture it, plus send the feeds through to my Atem for the live edit. That gives me a backup of the slide feed. If I like the box, I might buy a second one and take a program out/SDI Out from the Atem in addition to the hi res recording the Video Assist will do, to this little box to have an H.264 recording already done as well. That gives me a lower res program record back up too. And at 70 dollars it's obviously way cheaper.
Hi John, You know a thing or two about the HyperDecks - just ordered a Studio HD Mini (new version with single output) - and trying to figure out what SD cards i can use in it. Was a bit shocked to see the very limited range of cards mentioned on BMD’s support site - what cards are safe to use (from your experience) - i tend to stick with either Lexar or Sandisk when i shop for camera use.. Is there a speed i need to stick to as a minimum etc.? I plan to simply order UHS-II cards to be safe, but i must admit that BMD documentation is a bit sparse (nothing new from them though 😉)
I am able to get FTP to work on only 1 of my 3 of these devices. I have updated them all to latest firmware. I can load ftp files from and to that hyperdeck but I can not seem to play them out. No matter what codec. Any thoughts?
Hi John, great product review. Quick question if you may know.... Using the ATEM Software Control to record/playback the Hyperdeck Studio Mini, do you know how to switch between each SD Card? The only way I can get access to the 'other' SD Card if the current one is selected is to quickly eject and re-insert... It is same with Hyperdeck Studio Pro... This can be a little problematic in a live scenario when we want to sometimes record a feed and then playback media that is on the other SD Card.. Thanks for your time
@@heretorecord Thanks for your reply there mate. Much appreciated! Maybe in a future firmware update or something or until someone comes up with a hack... oh well!
I am just wondering if you could for instance edit a captured file with resolve (HNxHD)and put it back with ftp for playing. Have you tested it? I would like to use it as a player for editted films in combination with a projector or huge television screen. Thank you...
Have you had any issues with the audio and video not syncing on longer recordings? I had a blackmagic H.264 encoder which would always go out of sync on long recordings - and I've heard a few other people mention that this new device can have issues. I've also heard that it is prone to rebooting itself during a recording session.
HI, I bough it thinking that I would have direct connectivity t FCP X or mount the SD cards on the desktop to transfer my files. I am unable to transfer my files from the Unit to the computer unless I use the FTP Cyberduck utility.. What am I missing? I would love to connect the USB 3 cable and access the card? Why can't Black magic enable the deck to be access through USB 3?
biskut nation I bough it months ago and i have not used it at all.. it is sitting pretty on my desk!!! What a waste of money on my part.. i will sell it to the best suitor who can use it..
Hi John, I already got the Video Assist 4K, so apart from rack mount with my ATEM ST HD and the ftp capabilities, am I missing something? Also, did you try ftp during recording?
You’re not missing anything if you have the VA4K. Other than key/fill output on graphics if you want to play back from the HyperDeck. Never tried the ftp during recording!
Not quite - This cannot be connected to a computer the way a Web Presenter can. The USB port on the back is for software updates. This is an SD card recorder and playback device :)
Ohhh. My bad luck. Anyways can you tell me what would you recommend if I want to stream at 1080p because Web Presenter stream at 720p only and any alternatives of web prsenter you suggest ? Thankyou.
Am I able to use this box to generate sdi-output and sdi-input for Mac, similar to mini recorder in combination with mini monitor? I'm searching for an alternative to the mini-devices, because I cannot connect both devices at the same time.
You could record the output of your Mac with this but you cannot use it for bringing any live video feed into your Mac. For this you will need the UltraStudio products from Blackmagic design!
hi, can i use this as a capture device for my vmix software? In other words, want to know if i can send the video feed direct from this device to my laptop, any help pls?
I'm growing more and more skeptical of Blackmagic these days. The mini only records in progressive and the files don't playback on a Mac. Skip this product and avoid it like the plague. Get an AJA HELO or a DataVideo HDR-1.
Hi John, Thanks as ever for the wealth of info on your channel. Have you ever come across a flickering image recording from a laptop (powerpoint)? I've been trying to trouble shoot it a problem I had on a shoot recently. There's a thread on Creative Cow explaining the issue: forums.creativecow.net/thread/124/886408 In short, the workflow: Client laptop running powerpoint > Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter (client's own unfortunately so not able to test) > HDMI splitter > HDMI1 - HDMI cable > venue projector (which looked fine suggesting any issue was from this point onwards in the chain) HDMI2 - HDMI cable > BMD HDMI to SDI Micro Converter > SDI (Van Damme 30m cable) > HyperDeck Studio Mini (which said the signal was 1080i 59.94) I've tried the HDMI to SDI Micro Converter elsewhere and had no problems. I've also tried the splitter and had no problems recording a video file (though admittedly haven't tried a .PPT) I've also tried the SDI cable and again, no issues. Wondered if it could feasibly be something to do with a recording setting on the HDSM or an output setting from the laptop? Or potentially to do with the low res proxy record (trying to stretch how much I could fit on a single SD). It wasn't a crucial recording but would have saved me a few hours in post! Any thoughts appreciated but I figure I'll just keep plugging stuff in and out until I figure it out. Cheers
I get laptop issues all the time sadly - I’ve found it’s often to do with HDCP and even on a PC signal (well often it’s a Mac issue) there are issues on the time. There isn’t always a simple fix sadly as you never know if things will work until the actual live show and then it messes up again. If you can though, removing HDCP in some way is probably the best solution for most cases!
Here to Record literally just wrapped the follow up event and problem solved with the stupidly simple and brilliant BiDirectional Micro Converter and a mini display to hdmi cable. Instead of passing through about 4 devices I just used one and in workflow terms it's a dream. Will check rushes properly later but a skim at lunchtime looked good.
Really good. Thank you for sharing this information. Have a phenomenal new year! 😉

Thanks for the video John. Can I use the HDMI out to create a feed into the Atem as a video playback source?
Yes you can!
Can u help me as I recently purchased a BMD Atem pro studio 4K Mixer. which field recorder will be better for me as my budget is low?
Check out the video I just released on the AVerMedia Capture device - it's not 4K but it's an inexpensive way to record a program for sure!

I’m afraid I have no idea about that one. It would be best to ask them through their support staff - sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
Can you use all the outputs at the same time? Thanks mate. Cheers
Yes you can!
Thanks for the reply
did you repot that it can be used as a digital sinage player....
I did not but it can.
Is there a way to put commercials on an SD card and use that to do playback during a live broadcast?
Absolutely. We covered that in another video 😬 ua-cam.com/video/r1Ygjhu0tRc/v-deo.html
So how much recording time will a 64GB card hold at 1080?
Is there a TBC built in? I'm trying to transfer thousands of analog (VHS) tape to digital. Just looking for a easier and faster way. Thanks!
I don’t believe it does.
Katie, probably Blackmagic H.264 Pro Recorder is fine for you
are the outputs looped?

bmd decklink quad 2
I need a recorder than can live capture from my hdmi from my camcorder and turn it into an MP4. Will this work? Are there cheaper alternatives?
no audio input? how does the recordings get audio?
All the audio will often come in through HDMI or SDI from a video switcher.
Can I livestream with this ???
Nope. This is just a recording device
What is the best SD Card to use for this?
Anything on their official list - you’ll find that in the support page of their website :)

In short, the workflow:

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter (client's own unfortunately so not able to test) >
HDMI splitter >
HDMI1 - HDMI cable > venue projector (which looked fine suggesting any issue was from this point onwards in the chain)

Exactly. Like an SD card version of the HyperDecks!
