Note that in addition to carcinsation, there is also decarcinisation. Sometimes critters change environments or their environment changes under them. There are a whole lot of benefits to being crab-shaped, but there are also benefits to not being crab-shaped sometimes. That said, there is a whole lot more traffic towards crabs than away.

@@peculiarjack617 Good Isopods vastly under appreciated arthropods given they have colonized both the sea floor and land. Chelicerates also have a good odds with their UV fluorescent exoskeletons and possession of a cartilaginous endoskeleton actually for them I think we should be thankful they didn't evolve true lungs.... If we had to deal with arthropods that bypassed the oxygen diffusion problem and the square cubed law limits on exoskeletons we would probably all be in trouble. One group even basically did carcinization to boot

Two things. 1) Aren't there a lot of lobster-like crustaceans as well? At least as many as the crab-like crustaceans I would think? Or is that not counted here because a lobster-like body for a crustacean is there original body plan? 2) I'm glad it was mentioned that in taxonomy shared ancestry carries more weight than appearances. On a previous Sci-show or PBS Eons episode there was a field Biologist in the comments who was fighting tooth and nail for a need to categorize based solely on physical characteristics over genetic relationships. Glad most don't feel that way.

Mhm, yeah. It makes sense that the carcinization leads to a very successful body plan. We've even seen evidence of carcinization in species of extraterrestrial biospheres. It's been confirmed on Planet Namik (thanks to a brave human explorer in search of the four-star Dragonball) of the existence of giant endemic arthropod-like species that look exactly like true Earth crabs.

Its crazy how different environments can drive different paths of evolution. It captivates me how depending on the environment evolution changes, Evolution is its own super power we all don't realize we have been blessed with.
I love science, and that is why I'm here, but I'm going to say something superficial for once. I LOVE your earrings, they remind me of ones my grandmother used to sell in her craft shop (she didn't make them, one of her employees did, and she never taught anyone else how to make them). I admit that I m not bold enough to wear large earrings, but I do love to see them on other people.
I find it great that carcinization got a bit of attention from researches these days. Sometimes people would only say some species are similar due to convergent evolution, but not explain why convergent evolution lead to a specific pattern. Nice to see people going deeper, now waiting to see research about why vertebrates converge to snakes and fishes :-)

There are giant marine isopods (roly pollies) that are anatomically similar to terrestrial ones, but HUGE
