Watching this just brought a tear to my eye. Seoul 1988 was pure magic. We were confident we'd bag at a least a gold medal on the track- steeple chase guaranteed. We achieved that, and then more, but Robert Wangila's win in the boxing ring was the icing on the cake. Left to their own devices, Kenyans are capable of producing world beating standards.
I went to school with Robert’s son... I had a total crush on him too. He told me his dad was a great boxer but was so humble about it. Wasn’t until i recently told my dad (who is also Kenyan) that I realized how amazing Robert was. My dad freaked out and told me all about Mr. wangila, rest his soul.
@@breek.8678 Lucky you. If he's anything like his father, he must be a really handsome young man. His father made us proud, and put respect on our name. I hope one day, Kenya will do his father justice and commemorate his memory for posterity. If you see him around, let him know that we still remember his father...I was only 13 when he won that gold medal.
I miss you dad 😭 coach Charles anjimbi I can't stop watching u hug wangila roba after he won. I believe u both are in a better place dancing with the angels. Continue r.i.p we all miss you Papa ☺️
@ doty ajimbi You should be proud of your father. These are the men who make us proud to be Kenyans. I hope one day we will immortalise them on celluloid.
Watching this fight it shows what a huge difference between amateur boxing and professional boxing. Wangila was a great amateur but he was a flop as a pro. The 3 rounds in amateur boxing cover up a lot of weaknesses in fighters and once Wangila turned pro he never could overcome all weaknesses he had. May he Rest In Peace.
