Making music, with your friends or family will always be “worth it”. If you can avoid trying to make it your job, it is always worth it. .

It is difficult being an Artist trying to promote yourself with all the Spotify scams that deliver Bot plays then you have to cancel your distributor & start up again.

This week I celebrate 45 yrs in the music biz as an internationally recording and touring artist. Old timer. To me, music is something social and not exclusively for the few with extraordinary skills due to music school or whatever. Digital technology makes songwriting and recording accessible to people not fortunate with a music school background. Is that wrong? Then there is the likeliness to for instance football. Lots of kids loves playing football. Everybody wants to develop their skills, leave their mark, get recognition but not all wants nor will become pro footballers in major european clubs. Maybe 0,1 per thousand. To most, playing music or football will be nice social pasttime activities. But let their dreams flourish. Dreams are beautiful. I didn't have music school background nor formal music training. I was just lucky to write a song people enjoyed listening to. It took me to London, the Mecca of pop & rock music, then to Europe, then to the US playing prestigious clubs and headlining festivals with + 100 K people attending. I never had a hit record but people enjoyed the music when performed Live and the audience kept growing and growing and growing. I still dream of writing that ONE hit song, but I'm perfectly alright with writing songs people enjoy and willing to pay when performed Live. My guitarplaying skills are far, far from being on par with yours, Christiaan. But maybe my songwriting skills, honed for decades, surpasses yours, who knows. And by the end of the day - who cares. Music is for one and for all. Merry X-mas, Christiaan.

I've been playing for fun and enjoyment since 1965 ! I'm still doing it and I could care less about pro-performance , unless it's a private party , where i'll play for free .

Bravo Christiaan. I believe we met for the first time around 2013. what year was it when you had to turn in that rental car?

I only need the albums of my youth. My brain doesn t need all that variety, can t cope with it. There is also the fact that recorded music today does not have the depth, nostalgia, ambiance, acousticness, of pre 80 ties music, from pop to jazz, and will never acquire this pleasant varnish even over time as the people who live today live in an unpleasant artificial world will have to fake their intenseness

Hmm, is it really that much more people making music than 20-30-40... years ago? Or is it that it's much easier to record and bring your music out and publish it and make people aware of it? So musicians that in the past would maybe make a demo album, after saving for a long time to do so, every few years, now can basically record as soon as they have material ready and put it out there.
I once talked to a world class classical trumpet player (also plays jazz, pop etc...), and I complained to him how undervalued the live music is today. His response was that basically it was always the case that if you wanted to make a living playing music, you had to become a top shelf musician.
That was a very brave decision from you to turn down that gig. But then with the amount of work you put into becoming a top notch musician, it was inevitable that some door would open at some point.
In my 20s I would've turned down a similar offer. All I wanted to do back then was to get our band to land a major record deal.
Now I landed a gig playing songs from Encanto movie in a live show and embraced it with wide open arms and couldn't be happier. The pay is modest but ok, the energy is great and I'm becoming a better musician along the way. There are avenues to be a musician, other than becoming famous for your original music which seems to be what Steven was talking about. Even then, there are ways other than publishing albums to put your original music out there commercially.

In a kingdom you would have patrons. In a democracy you would have public funding for artists. Since we don’t live in a democracy we have commodification and crowdfunded patronage.

Really fascinating, I’ve been making music for over 35 yrs in a purely amateur capacity. I just enjoy creating tunes for fun and learning other people’s tunes too. With the advent of Distrokid et all I was able to release some music in my 50’s which nobody listens to but me. I don’t mind at all I just love listening to my little musical time capsules from time to time. I think I’ve made about $3 in royalties from occasional listeners but I still do it for fun. It’s a need to create. Haven’t got the ability to play live so this is my musical legacy. I still love to learn and, most rewardingly, my 1 yr old grandson is fascinated by my guitar so hopefully he will show an interest

Great story about your personal experiences, that 45min walk back through nowhere must have felt crazy. Did you end up doing jobs for them at a later time, or are you still professionally affiliated somehow?
