Brookmeyer has the BEST tone ever. I have so many of his albums, and every time I hear him it's like hearing it again for the first time. He phrases his musical ideas so well, and they're all so interesting. Great song, played by great players. It's good too see some close ups to show how strong Bob's embouchure is. That's how Trombone should be played!
insane! He looked all of us dead in the eye and said, "My slide trombonists can play this and so can you." We did it! And we grew as players because of it. He was an amazing artist and an amazing teacher. It is a shame he is no longer with us.
I had the opportunity to play with Brookmeyer when I attended the University of Missouri Kansas City. His playing was amazing and awe inspiring. His arrangements struck fear in our trombone section. We returned after being handed the scores and started rehearsal...after about 5 minutes of playing he stopped everyone and looked at our section. He said something to the effect of what the hell have you been doing the past 24 hours. One of us, it may have been my brash self, said these lines are...
Brookmeyer put the valve trombone on the very very top of the heap!...who the hell ever would think that a valve trombone could sound so delicious?...he was a truly "innovator" in the very best sense of the word!.. listening to him, makes me really want to play that great instrument!...
Just heard this AM on NPR "Jazz After Hours" that Mr. Brookmeyer had died a couple of weeks ago. He could make a valve trombone sound like it had a slide more than anyone I've heard or known. What a HELL of a musician who could turn out such beautiful melodic solos. Wish I'd payed closer attention to him thru the years, but I discounted him because he didn't play the slide... My loss. Bob will live on in his recordings; please put more of him on Utube.
@linusjazz I do , a German rotary valve in C with a very great tone. Played a lot of trad , swing and also my own version of Moonlight in Vermont. I hope to fond more of BB and Jimmy Guiffre, Jim Hall
This must be before 1981, since Sco is playing his old Gibson ES-335 -which is on the cover of his album ' Who's Who'. Beautiful tone 7 playing from the guy on the valve 'bone.
@DrBones2 what about those lines? He's on my list of horn players to transcribe, but it will be a pain to get it to fit well on the ol' 6 string octave wise.
The best jazz trombonist in history. It is pleasant to listen to it for an infinitely long time. Unfortunately, the slide trombone does not provide clarity. It is impossible to listen to it for a long time. Even the legendary trombonists Johnson, Fuller, Hampton, Winding play ponderously and quickly get bored. Even Rosolino, Fontana and Watrous lose to any trumpeter. Such is the unpromising fate of the slide - trombone in jazz. Bob Brookmeyer turned out to be smarter!

das buzze geven hoor. Thank you man. Two genius. Rip Bob. but always present.
Two of my all-time favorite musicians - brilliant! I guess I've been missing out by not diving into UA-cam for music videos.
I wish more people played valve trombone. It's funny to see Sco with a 335... thanks for posting!
equilibrio ed eleganza inimitabili (Grandi) merci

fantastic recording!!
but i miss the upload in which the duo of Jim Hall& Bob were playing 'Valse Hot'
This must be 1979 or 1980, since Sco is playing his old Gibson ES-335 and not his now omnipresent 1981 Ibanez AS 200.
@GitSassy
I agree, that was a great piece!

3:55 to 5:30 LOL!!!!!!!
I had to watch it just to see what you meant!!!

Oh man! Mr. Brookmeyer is dead? So sad to hear...
Lol they spelled Scof(f)ield's surname wrong.
Masterful but dreary.
Just displace it by an octave and just keep up with where you are.
valve trombone ftl. good tone though.
Superb!
