- Taken in July-August 1989 when 4472 , Flying Scotsman was running trips out of Melbourne , Australia , it includes three steam engines running side by side leaving Melbourne and at Heathcote Junction.
Scenes that will probably never be repeated. This was a once-in-a-lifetime event
I would've given anything to see this but I wasn't even born yet haha
I love how cutting through the other exhaust's is Scotsman's distinctive three cylinder beat. Stands out a mile away.
Agreed , it is very distinctive
That triple header scene towards North Melbourne is priceless!
Thanks Matt, it's something you won't see again , enjoying your latest videos mate
Its like they're racing
A late friend of mine drove R707 between Avenel and Seymour beside 3801. He told me that they gave 3801 a head start but caught up with it and overtook it after Avenel Bank
The Flying Scotsman is actually one of my favourite steam locomotives ever built. Wish it could come back to Australia again if it happens.
No! After everything he's been through and being almost lost in the U S Scott must never leave Britain again! There are thousands of videos online that give people worldwide the chance to see him.
The old Somerton rd crossing is crazy to look at back then to now…. I grew up in Meadow heights , now it’s a bridge an 2 lanes each side all the way to Epping
thanks for the memories! went on FS during her Aus tour, went on the R761 and 707 several times, and train chasing many more times! welding coins on the rail.. Soot in your eyes..
I had a blast during my time there, it was awesome
looked alot better than the failed usa excursion lol
@@yeoldeseawitch yea true lol
@@Flyingscotsman19_23 tho i do think that you looked cool with a cowcatcher and headlamp. the bell and 3 chime whistle looked out of place however
Best thing was seeing the Flying Scotsman do a triple parallel run with Hudson's R707 and R761
this was twice as good when i watched it for the second time.
That was a great time to be a steam fan here in Oz!
What a gr8 video...
Cheers from John in Australia
A sight for sore eyes so they are, fabulous.
Thank you , glad you enjoyed it .
Some of this footage was released on DVD in recent years by GoEntertain. Good to see there is some extra footage that didn’t make the cut. 😎
I made a video called 4472 down under years ago and this was extra footage taken after that video was made .
John Phillips I have that on VHS. Excellent production you did BTW on that one. Right down to the sausages being cooked on the shovel 😎
@@K1571 Yes, I was lucky to have a cab ride in 4472 with driver Norm De Pomeroy at the controls so I could get footage for that video , it was quite a day .
I wish that Great Northern, Doncaster, Cameronian, Salmon Trout, and Papyrus were in preservation while their classmate Flying Scotsman was on tour in Australia
Wow I wish I was alive to see this back the haha
Same
6:03 to 7:00 is an absolutely spectacular shot.
Thanks for that
I remember the triple parallel run if it happened yesterday even though I was only 5 years old at the time. It's unfortunate that it can't be repeated because the Scotsman is back in BR (British Rail) green and with smoke deflectors
Back not as he should be perhaps . But at least he's safe.
I was 6 when this happened ;)
when J 515 is back they can sorta react this but with 3801
@Trainman90, J515 is under another restoration and hopefully will be out again in the near future
@@robbiewales3007 yes I know that
G'day John, I hope this finds you well. I was Riding on the footplate of one of the Hudsons that day, I forgot to note down which and the crews. Do you have any flicks of the Trio at Heathcote Jtcn? Would love it Framed! Cheers.
Sorry ,the only footage is that featured in this video .
6:00 show this to Greta.
'How dare you!'
OOF she would be maaad AF
Amazing video I wish I could have seen it but I wasn’t even born yet also is the Flying Scotsman running on Broad or Standard gauge
Standard gauge
13:54 why do they have H sets on the end?
They were working the cars back to Melbourne and attached them to the back of the train .
@@johnphillips592 oh okie I thought they ran out of room on the train
That looks like our state
What whistle is that on Flying Scotsman? It sounds GREAT. Also I notice it's under the fire box.
It's currently very chilling to listen than American one that she brought over.
Santa fe 6 chime
It is a SAR Nathan 963-A-1030 6 chime off a first series 720 class Berkshire.
@@VT29steamtrain as I can recall, the SAR Nathan 6 chime is a replica of a Nathan. They used that whistle in the US on flying scotsman, so I think it's a Santa fe 6 chime, It does sound like one
@@aussie_trainspotting_videos The SAR used either genuine or copy Nathan 6's. The whistle on the Scotsman while it was here is most definitely not an ATSF 6.
How did they do this? I’m 96% certain Australia has a wider loading gauge that Britain.
Australia has standard gauge - the other loco's were on broad gauge 1600mm
Australia has 3 guages but all of the capital cities are connected with standard gauge
Yes
I can’t be the only one who thought these were German steam engines ? 7:40 (Mainly because most are black and red)
Sorry , built by North British , ran in Victoria Australia and they were broad gauge , 5 foot 3 inch ,
They also have the same shape as a German loco,
Flying Scotsman whistle is shit. Nothing on the Aussie locos
micks a, strong word shit. it does sound particularly like a domestic steam kettle. i do think it is a bad choice, though common in uk.
