@13:12 you mention that the little section "...the little bit of white left out the top it has to have, it can't be all of the way down..." . This is something new to me and probably why some of my attempts at grafting have failed. Thank you for pointing this out. I have always pushed the scion in too far and I recall how this caused difficulty getting the different layers to press against each other and make good contact.
grafting is cool and all.. but I encourage you guys to start seeds if you have them. Don't let someone tell you that seed started fruit trees don't work and you will wait forever for fruit. Sure if you buy a 15 gal tree you'll surely have fruit faster but... I have some fig trees started from seed and my oh my let me tell you. They are absolutely exploding with growth, the structure of the tree is so much more beautiful, productive and natural than that of a grafted tree or cutting. Another advantage if you are going for more of a natural approach is that the soil used for starting your seeds is more acclimated to your native soil. I feel genetic diversity is also important, plant multiple seedlings because as some will say seeds aren't always true to the parents fruit. That can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Thanks always for the free advice Jake, cheers.

VeganAthlete one of. those Italian grafing or Spanish, not sure, said you can buy that therofilm at the pharmacy so i got some @ Walmart 3M Nexcare but the forreign language video which i dont understand didnt show the bud growing through the film. This english language video explained the growth could go through the film . Very much appreciate that
Sorry to nit pick you. Great demo. Thumbs up and subscribed. The cambium is the part that grows and heals the graft. The cambium is right next to the phloem. The cambium is what makes the trunk, branches and roots grow thicker. Phloem and Xylem are involved in nutrient transport. Phloem transports downward and Xylem transport upwards. No disrespect just a friendly observation.
I was about to say the same thing. Cambium is the meristem tissue. It's the stem cells that divide and then differentiate into the different stem cell types.
Very informative video, thank you! I was wondering, how long does it take from Diospyros Lotus (date-plum) seeds to rootstock material like in this video?

All you had to do is just cut a short scion piece from the long scion length, with typically two or three buds on the short scion piece, if not only one bud, then make your long angle cuts. Also, wrapping with the rubber band thingy before wrapping with the parafilm is a good way too, more standard procedure,… - the securing(rubber band), then the protecting from moisture loss of scion piece (parafilm)
Hi Dave. My persimmon trees have been dropping fruits like crazy. Do I need a pollinator tree to solve this problem? What kind or variety of persimmon woul you recomend? Thank you so much.
Funny how there so few comments and like buttons clicked on when you think of how incredibly important tree grafting really is to the survival of the human race. I think of things like that, what can I say?
buyerofsorts Ok , you want more comments i will giveyou one . Majòrity of viewers dont consider a thumbs up or like button important. Its only imporant to please thehost but most people dont know that. I didnt know that till i was schooled @the Shakaama channel ( his majorsource of income is from UA-cam ).
Diospyros Lotus are very much edible. Also called "date plums", they need to ripen even more than regular persimmons in order to be edible. Otherwise, they will be the most astringent thing you ever put in your mouth, even at the stage where normal persimmons would be considered ripe. Also, they aren't a good rootstock for every persimmon variety, contrary to what this gentleman said in the video. Non-astringent varieties like Fuyu do very poorly on the Lotus rootstock.

Excellent demonstration. I saw so many factors I had not seen before in grafting demos. Thank you Doug and Jake.
Well done. Audience applauded. Thank you.

I want to buy persimmon grafting tree
Is it possible to graft onto a non fruit root stock?
Rath Man it would have to be part of the persimmon family otherwise it won't take

Use the wax. "We" want to know how to graft without the need for a purchase from a store...
Go make some rope from plant fibers to tie it, then seal it all with mud. Way back a long time ago that is how it was held together and sealed.
