Even in criminal investigations many innocent person's have been jailed on the terms that they were unable to look the investigator in the eyes... On how to deal with lies however, I believe if you confirm the person is lying to you, then just decide whether you can live with lies and stay or move on if you can't. Liars don't change. It's a character trait you develop early in life. Asking for explanations doesn't help anything but it may only give the liar the opportunity to spin more lies to convince you that they were saying the truth. Like you said and from my experience, I trust my instinct very much and once it tells me there's something wrong, I will seek to investigate it and if I confirm my fears, the only path available is to move on.
